RNG

A random number generator (RNG) is a computational or physical device designed to generate a sequence of numbers or symbols that lack any pattern, i.e. appear random.

RNG and Luck

In Elements: The Game, the RNG term is used to describe luck-based events like the following: Percentage shields (Fog Shield, Dusk Mantle, Thorn Carapace, Ice Shield, Skull Shield), Random effects ( Chaos Seed/Power, Pandemonium, Mutation, Hatch, Scramble, Undead), random quanta generation (Quantum Pillar/Tower), Dissipation Field, Shards (Shard of Integrity, Shard of Serendipity, Shard of Freedom), Nymph's Tears used on Quantum Pillar/Tower, qaunta used to pay an Other card, quanta drained by Devourer, card drawing, starting hand. However, there are a few things which are pure luck (and maybe a bit of skill) and they have nothing to do with RNG, like prepairing the right deck for the right opponent or guessing what cards your opponent has and play accordingly. Furthermore, RNG used to create brackets for a tournament is RNG-based but not related with in-game ETG and it is not analyzed here.

How to counter bad RNG

A problem most of Elements: The Game players have with RNG is when it is really 'mean' and 'unfair' against them, especially with starting hands and card drawing. Unfortunately, there is no true counter to RNG. Fortunately, there are a few soft counters to it which are going to be described below.

Percentage shields (Fog Shield, Dusk Mantle, Thorn Carapace, Ice Shield, Skull Shield)

There is nothing you can do to increase the percentage of these shields directly, however there are a few ways to make them a bit more successful.

  1. Play them as soon as possible; an empty shield slot is always a 0% blocking chance. Furthermore, if you have your shield played early in a game it will have its chance to block more attacks than if played later. Do not wait your opponent to play a creature first in order to play your shield after that (except if you have something else in your mind), because creatures attack on the very same turn they are summoned and it is good to be affected from the very first turn they come into play.
  2. Enchant/Protect them; no matter how strange it seems, an Enchanted/Protected percentage shield has a greater chance to affect its target for a very simple reason. The chance of being removed by the opponent is 0%! A deflaged or stolen shield offers no protection at all while a [[Enchant_artifact|protected] one guarantees its position on your shield slot for the rest of the game, drastically increasing the turns it has a chance to affect enemy creatures.
  3. Combine them with other cards; casting Adrenaline on opponent's creature makes your Thorn Carapace to kill it much faster, reducing its health increases Skull Shield's chance to turn it into a (harmless?) Skeleton, Flooding the field with an Ice Shield on it leaves your opponent with only five critters which will be likely frozen etc.
  4. Use it against big hitters; almost all of these shields are better used against a single Golden Dragon than an army of 20 Photons. Against armies of small creatures, pure DR shields usually work better.
  5. Use alternative cards; if you dislike luck-based cards, there are a few equivalents which are not based on luck. Turtle Shield is a fine replacement for Fog Shield or Dusk Mantle, since it always prevenents a 50% of the attacks, plus delaying your opponent's creatures. Fire Shield can also replace Thorn Carapace, since it is also a damage-dealing shield which doesn't rely on luck to function.

Random effects ( Chaos Seed/Power, Pandemonium, Mutation, Hatch, Scramble, Undead)

Once again you can't directly manipulate these effects to your advantage, but you can make wiser decisions:

  1. Combine them with cards they work well with; unupped Pandemonium synergises perfectly with Voodoo Dolls, Discord's Scramble does wonders with Black Hole against mono-decks etc.
  2. Try to use them more than once; seriously, the best way to increase your chances is to re-use the ability. That is the reason Fallen Elves & Druids are more reliable than the spell Mutation; they can mutate more than once, pretty useful to mutate a creature again and again until it dies or turns into something weak. Eternities are also better than Rewinds when combined with Skeletons for the same reason; you can Reverse a whole army of Skeletons with it, while you can have only 6 Rewinds in your deck. Finally, Mitosis or Fractal upon your Fate Egg allows you to re-use its effect until you get something good...
  3. Use alternative cards; if you find a luck-based card of yours unreliable, use a more reliable version of it (considering it exists). Blessing/Improved Blessing does excatly what an average Chaos Power does, Rain of Fire or even Thunderstorm can replace upped Pandemonium and use lethal CC instead of Mutation (Drain Life, Ice Bolt etc.).

Random Quanta Generation (Quantum Pillar/Tower)

There is unfortunately only a few things you can do here to increase the chance of getting the quanta you need from a Quantum Pillar/Tower:

  1. Use even more Quantum Pillars/Towers; the more towers you have, the greater the chance to gain quanta of a specific type you need is.
  2. Use Novas/Supernovas instead; according to your deck, novas may be better. For example, in a 30-card rainbow rush, it is more reliable if you replace 6 Quantum Pillars/Towers with 6 Novas/Supernovas.
  3. Use elemental pillars; if your deck is focused on a cetrain element, replacing some of your Quantum Pillars/Towers with Pillars/Towers of that element could be useful.

Dissipation Field

This shield has the unique ability to drain random quanta of yours in order to protect you. The only things you can do are:

  1. Use lots of Quantum Pillars/Towers in order to be able to feed it; you may be amazed in how fast a Dissipation Field drains your quanta and this may leave you without any quanta of a specific type you desperately need. So, having tons of Quantum Pillars/Towers helps a lot!
  2. Avoid to play a Dissipation Field very early in the game; seriously, it is better to wait a while until you have a huge supply of quanta income. Otherwise, your quanta pool is going to be depleted and your Dissipation Field will be destroyed, leaving you both vulnerable and without any quanta.

Shards (Shard of Integrity, Shard of Serendipity, Shard of Freedom)

Three of the Shrads (SoI, SoSer, SoFre) seem to be luck-based. Here are a few secrets about them.

  1. Shard of Integrity is NOT as random as it seems; I have included this card into the RNG-based ones not because it really is an RNG-based card, but because it gives the impression of being one of them. Actually, there is a board which shows exactly the stats a Shard Golem, made by a SoI, takes in relation with the various Shards used upon its creation (the link is here:[1]).
  2. Use multiple copies of SoSer & SoFre; though these Shards are powerful, they are rarely enough if played only once. Shard of Serendipity may not create playable creatures the first time, but in the second one it might give only playable ones. On the othe hand, multiple Shards of Freedom increase the 25% chance greatly, sometimes making your creatures truly immortal!
  3. Use SoSer & SoFre as Shard Golem material; honestly, if RNG is mean with you when you use these Shards (which I highly doubt), then just use them as Shard Golem material. Both SoSer & SoFre can give awesome active abilities to your Shard Golem, varying from Burrow to Unstable Gas and from Dead/Alive to Anti-matter!

Nymph's Tears used on a Quantum Pillar/Tower

Nymph's Tears is usually an ability that turns a pillar of an element into its respective Nymph. However, since Quantum Pillars/Towers are of Other element, the Nymph produced via them is random. There are two ways to gain the Nymph you like;

  1. Use a lot of Nymph Queens; you will need them to repeatedly transform Quantum Pillars/Towers into Nymphs until you get the one you like. You can either use ultra rare Nymph Queen cards or create them via Nymph's Tears and Water Pillars/Pendulums instead.
  2. Avoid using Quantum Pillars/Towers and use elemental ones instead. If you need only one or two Nymph types, it is far better to include only these two kind of pillars/towers into your deck and exclude the quantum ones completely.

Quanta used to play an Other card

Unfortunately, when paying an Other card's cost you are unable to choose which quanta type to use and this may result in wasting precious quanta of yours. So, here are a few tricks:

  1. Always pay for non-other cards first; if you wish your Longbow to use your 2 quanta instead of wasting your 2 precious quanta needed to summon your Horned Forg, then your best choice is to play your Forg BEFORE playing your Longbow. This can save you lots of times.
  2. Use non-other card equivalents; replacing the Longbow of the example above with an Owl's Eye could be an excellent idea if you are not tight in quanta.

Quanta drained by Devourer

Devourer drains 1 random quanta from your opponent and converts it into a quanta of yours each turn. Though the Pest's owner doesn't really care which quanta type is going to be drained, it is usually vital for the opponent. Here is a thing you can do to deal with it:

  1. Balance your quanta income; relying only to a mark as a quanta source of a certain type is not always a good idea. Multiple Pests can deplete it pretty fast, so adding a few Pendulums won't hurt.
  2. Sanctuary; nothing more, nothing less! Sanctuary prevents hostile Devourers from draining any quanta of yours making them nearly harmless.

Card Drawing, Starting Hand

There are a few cards that really help with this:

  1. Drawing effects of cards; Sundial, Golden Hourglass and Precongition have amazing usefulness here. Countless ETG gamers favor those cards as a counter towards "bad", RNG-ruined draws.
  2. Shard of Bravery; as an Other card, SoBr can provide every deck with decent card-drawing capabilities.
  3. Deckbilding; the best way to deal with bad starting hands and bad card draws has to do with your deckbuilding skills. Each card type represents a percentage of the deck and the chances to draw one card of that certain type heavily depends on this. At the end of this article are boards which reveal these percantages. You are greatly encouraged to take a look on them and use them as a deck-building utility.

Other Tricks For Less "bad" RNG

  • Limit your deck to 30 cards; this will likely allow you to draw the right card at the right time.
  • Use 6 copies of each non-pillar card in your deck; that technique usually guarantees drawing at least a single copy of that card during a match.
  • Avoid complex comboes; comboes which rely on more than two cards in order to succeed are extremely vulnerable to "bad" RNG, so use either two-card comboes or avoid using any comboes at all.
  • Use Mono-decks; though monos are generally less versatile than duos, trios etc. it is guaranteed you have the right quanta type for every card in your hand. Another good option are duos which rely only on pendulums of a single non-mark element to play their cards.

Example Decks

Here are a few decks which may not be the most effective of their kind, but they provide soft counters against RNG:

Nymphs & Precog

4sa 4sa 4sa 4sa 4sa 4sa 4sa 4sa 4sa 5i4 5i4 5i4 5i4 5i4 5i4 5i4 5i4 5i4 5ig 5ig 5ig 5ig 5ig 5ig 5rr 5rr 5rr 5rr 5rr 5rr 8ps

This deck has 3o cards overall with 6 copies of Nymph's Tears in order to maximise the chance of drawing one of them, 6 Precongitions with a mark in order to counter RNG by increasing the deck's drawing speed, and finally an even number of Water Pillars and Quantum Pillars (9 of each kind) in order to generate Nymph Queens first and use them to create Nymphs of other kinds later.

Fractal & Eggs

5ri 5ri 5ri 5ri 5ri 5ri 61t 61t 61t 61t 61t 61t 622 622 622 622 63a 63a 63a 63a 63a 63a 63a 63a 63a 63a 63a 63a 63a 63a 8ps

Not the most effective deck for sure, since Fate Eggs are too random, but with Fractal on your side your chances are significantly increased. The 6 Phase Shields are for keeping yourself alive long enough to perform the combo and Aether Pendulums are used instead of Time Factories and Aether Pillars in order to avoid further messing with RNG. Replacing two Aether Pends with two Fractals would maximize the chance of drawing one, however you are unlikely to need more than 1-2 Fractals per game and 4 copies offer a good chance of drawing 1-2 of them.

Mitosis & Elves

4vc 4vc 4vc 4vc 4vc 4vc 4vc 4vc 4vm 4vm 4vm 4vm 4vm 4vm 50u 50u 50u 50u 50u 50u 50u 50u 5c2 5c2 5c9 5c9 5c9 5c9 5c9 5c9 8pn

In this deck, there are 6 Fallen Elves and 6 Mitosis to use upon them. After creating a small army of Elves, use their Mutation ability upon strong hostile creatures or upon themselves in order to turn them into Abominations. A mixture of Amethyst Pillars and Entropy Pendulums is used because here quanta is needed more than quanta. These 2 Heals are just for a tiny extra support. We once again mostly use 6 copies of a single card in a 30-card deck for better drawing chance.

Mono-life Creature Rush

5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bu 5bu 5bu 5bu 5bu 5bu 5c0 5c0 5c0 5c0 5c0 5c0 5c8 5c8 5c8 5c8 5c8 5c8 5de 5de 5de 5de 5de 5de 8pn

A simple, pure and fast rush, this deck minimizes card drawing RNG by including only a mixture of Emerald Pillars and Life Pendulums (for a soft-protection against Earthquakes) with three creature types whitch have about the same cost and damage-dealing capabilities (Horned Frog, Cockatrice, Forest Scorpion).

Air-mark Water Rush

5i4 5i4 5i4 5i4 5i4 5i4 5i4 5i4 5i4 5i4 5i4 5i4 5i4 5i4 5id 5id 5id 5id 5id 5id 5ie 5ie 5ie 5ie 5ie 5ie 5og 5og 5og 5og 8pr

Another type of rush, this 30-card deck uses 4 Fog Shields in order to give a great chance to draw one early in the game as well as 6 copies of 2 powerful creatures, the Ice Dragon and the Toadfish. Pillars are used instead of Pendulums, because the mark provides the needed quanta and extra quanta is needed to pay the expensive creatures.
