Overview
Sundials are a staple of many decks, creating a one-turn stall and allowing an extra draw for a small cost.
General Use
Quick Facts:
- Sundial's passive ability, Stasis, prevents creatures from attacking for one turn.
- Stasis will not prevent weapons in the weapon slot from attacking.
- Sundial's active ability, Hasten, allows the player to draw an extra card.
With a cheap cost of 1 quanta (or nothing at all if upgraded), Sundials are a viable card to include in any deck for a one-turn stall. Note though that the stalling effect doesn’t provide complete invulnerability; a Sundial only prevents creatures (including yours) from attacking on the round it is played. Weapons in the weapon slot and player-targeted spell bolts (i.e. Siphon Life and Ice Lance) can still be used to damage you. Nonetheless, the effectiveness of a Sundial should never be underestimated (and that’s saying something for a type of clock that only works during the daytime)!
Sundial prevents creatures from attacking, but each creature will stick take its "turn" like normal. Creatures that are poisoned will take damage, etc.
Synergies
Sundials provide a cheap way to stall, and work well with cards that have a similar function. Dimensional Shield is a good candidate because of its ability to avoid damage for three turns. Together, the two can be used as a long-term form of protection from creatures. Having a Sundial or two can buy time to generate more quanta or help draw another shield.
With its active ability, Sundial also works to buy time to draw cards needed to set up a combo or win the game. Naturally, it can combine with Golden Hourglasses, also from , to quickly go through a large deck. Sundials are only effective for one draw, but with their stall power buy ample time to draw any necessary cards or gather quanta.
Because Sundial prevents creatures from attacking but does not affect other damage, Poison can be used effectively to freely damage your opponent. A Time-Death deck can stall the opponent while drawing and playing poison to deal damage while enemy creatures are rendered unable to attack. Arsenic is also able to attack while Sundial is active, and the extra turns allow more poison damage to build up.
Other Cards with Synergy
Because Sundial does not prevent weapon attacks, it naturally works well with any weapon cards in a deck. From getting an extra turn of healing from Druidic Staff to picking off an enemy creature with Owl's Eye, an extra turn of a weapon can make a difference in the tide of a battle.
Similarly, creatures with powerful abilities benefit from the extra turn. Sundial can give your Otyugh a chance to devour another dangerous creature, or allow your Arctic Squid to freeze another target.
Conclusion
Sundial is an incredibly versatile stalling card, with a small cost and large effect, and is at home in a wide variety of decks, whether cycling through your deck to find the card you need or simply holding off attacks for one more turn.
