Just tested this deck mostly unupgraded...without towers was just too slow:

seism has easily and fast creatures for 50+ dam on the table (even L-Bolts wont help a lot, taking out some elite shriekers...)

i couldnt build up enough damage before running out of dim shields (brought 3 to the table, just in time with 7 life left), as unupped dragons do only 5 dam vs. diamond shield...u simply dont have that much time. at least i didnt...

I couldn't win - Shield chain was broken at about 5 turns before deckout, and I still was with Seism at 100+ hp with no Granite Skin used...

you start the chain as late as possible
i usually wait until i have <40 HP and <18 draw or less from my deck before i start chaining them

I did it... Graboid spam doesn't make it simple though. I was down to 22 when I started to chain.

I just used the exact same deck (minus 3 towers unupped) with the OP 5 minutes ago. Looks like having only 5 creatures is a serious problem :D

With all the Rewinds Seism has, adding a single Phase Spider/Recluse should help prevent deckout.

How often do you find yourself decking out with shields still left?

Good point. I haven't actually tried this deck versus him. I was just trying for an answer to the people who keep running into that situation.
