Duality Series - Where Hybrid Cards Began https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=19516.msg247880#msg247880
« on: January 15, 2011, 03:22:31 am »
Hello card designer. You're probably famillar with the Hybrid Marks, which are part of a popular card idea group of 'hybrids' on the Card Idea and Art forums.

What many users probably aren't familiar with these days is hybrid's origin. Hybrids started being discussed as an idea when I first posted Chaos Lightning on the forums - duo-cost cards (e.g. Cost X and Y) had been posted before and was considered uncodable, but hybrids (e.g. Cost X or Y) had never been done before and I had devised a coding workaround that seemed very easy to put in at face value.

Unfortunately, I learned that this workaround wasn't possible - on the bright side, hybrid cards are still indeed codable but would take up a lot of Zanz's time to do so. Nowadays, people don't usually think of this thread when they discuss hybrid cards, but if you're reading this thread, this is where it all began.

Feel free to take a look at the ideas below; maybe they'll inspire you to make hybrid element ideas of your own.

Hey guys!  Welcome to the Duality Series's thread!

I sat. And I thought. How was I supposed to accomplish something that other elementals had been rejected from? The imagination is a powerful source of creativity, but that wouldn't be enough: clear reasoning and persuasiveness would also be needed.  I wandered, and traveled many other continents, viewing how other denizens of this world had battled and how they came to react to such ideas. Some were disdainful, others supportive. When I came back, I was ready- to suceed where others had failed.

Explanation of Quanta Cost  (special thanks to Oldtrees)
Duality Cards use hybrid quanta in order to pay their costs. This means that the card could cost 2A/B=2A or AB or 2B quanta, A and B being separate quantas. Quanta is taken randomly (similar to other), so a card that costs 8 :earth or :darkness could take 8 :earth, 8 :darkness, or anything in between like 3 :earth and 5 :darkness.
As summed up by Oldtrees:
Dual quanta aka 2A&B =AB are taboo by word of Zanz.
Hybrid quanta aka 2A/B =2A or AB or 2B still require code but are just a modification of the other code.

Here are the current cards:

v2.0 :
Dar'eth Claws | Dar'eth Claws (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,30015.0.html)

Dar'eth's Lash | Dar'eth's Lash (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,30175.0.html)

v1.0 : These cards were made before the creation of the Pseudo-Element section. As such, they have two forms - their Duality (intended) form and a form that was made at the time to fit the Crucible Rules.

In the Crucible:

NOTE: I usually take longer to make and edit these cards than normal cards due to the fact I tinker with the card border, and thus I usually need to remake the entire image rather than a quick copy/paste job in order to correct problems and implement suggestions.  However, this also leads to more individual and well-thought cards for this series, so the extended time is rather helpful as well.

COMING SOON:
Volcanic Shield
Kaosic

Current Status of card making: Remaking. All crucible cards have been remade!

Suggestions are always welcome.

erm, may have been asked and answered, but couldn't see:

For the costings, by the word "or" does that mean the quanta could come from two sources, or would have to be either completely from element 'a' or completely from element 'b'?

If it draws quanta from both, then I guess it will choose randomly like other.

If it has to be one or the other, how does it choose which quanta to take if you have enough quanta of both elements? (randomly?)

Beware, I remember some similar mechanic (random dual quanta) was suggested a lot of time ago, before my accident (about 1 year ago to make things less confusing) and he said something like "I've already thought of duals but they'd be a hell to code". I don't want to extinguish your hopes of seeing this mechanic make it to the game, since I like it too (would add a lot to it) but I'm just stating something I think I heard.

2A/B =2A or AB or 2B
In the world of logic this is normally assumed with the word or. However, more specifically, I didn't know whether what is meant to be:

2 A ∨ 2 B
or
2 (A ∨ B) [i.e. 2A ∨ AB ∨ 2B]

I hope that is clear :s

Glad to hear that, I hope the mechanic will be implemented then, since it could lead to a whole lot of brand new cards and ideas.

I had an idea for a permanent that is  :aether/ :time

I am not sure an appropriate cost, but what it would do is
Whenever a creature dies (yours or opponents) there is a 30% (50% upgraded) chance that the base version of that card (stat changes ignored) gets summoned on your side.
Absorbs  :aether :time

Also, if you don't like the fact that this would be stepping on clairvoyant dragon's toes (it also being  :aether/ :time)
this could also work as  :aether/ :darkness or  :aether/ :life
That which can be destroyed by the truth should be. Speak the truth even when your voice falters.
