Overview
Hammer and its upped counterpart, Gavel, play the foil to Short Sword and long sword. In exchange for up to an additional point of extra damage and extra health, the cost to play gavel is also twice the cost of playing a sword.
General Use
Quick Facts:
- Gets +1 damage if mark is or
- Has better stats than sword for more cost
Hammer is another other weapon card that can be splashed into any deck looking for some quick offense. Whereas sword can fit into any deck looking for a quick boost in offense, hammer truly shines in gravity and earth decks, as it gains a +1 damage boost if the user's mark is gravity or earth. This means that in a mono gravity or a mono earth deck, Hammer is a much more efficient tool for quick damage than Titan or Pulverizer.
Synergies
Whereas sword flys with a miniscule 2hp, Hammer has much more hp than sword, and even has an astounding 6hp when upgraded. This 6hp means that immediately after it is flown, Gavel can be turned into a quick burst attacker with stats of 11|1 with rage potion. Sword would need at least a Heavy Armor to get buffed enough for Rage Potion, Gavel's innate hp has enough that it can get the bonus attack immediately. If one wants a low quanta combo based on a few cards, raged Gavels is certainly an option.
Another valuable asset to Gavel's high hp and also its gravity boost is that it allows for synergy with acceleration. At 6|6, one will quickly get a very powerful attacker when Gavel is overdriven, or even accelerated. Casting Acceleration or Overdrive on Gavel will remove its own Hammer ability, so it will no longer gain a +1 atk due to mark bonus. However, the mark bonus can still be helpful in cases where Acceleration is not drawn, for a quick boost to attack.
Other Cards With Synergy
Just like Rage Potion, Liquid Shadow can be used by Hammer or Gavel to make use of its high hp and turn it into a powerful vampire. Immolation can also be used to set up and fly out Hammers quickly due to the huge influx of :rainbow gotten from a single immolation. Additionally, many immobows use an mark, so the Hammer becomes a very powerful, cheap hitter for immobows. Finally, any deck that uses a or mark when using Hammers can also consider splashing in some Gravity Pull or Basilisk Blood for creature control.
Conclusion
Hammer is a card for people who want quick damage and want it faster than Sword can offer. Hammer truly shines in a deck where the user's mark is that of or , so Hammer will often be seen alongside Graboid, Pharaoh, and even Lava Golem. Packing this powerful tool either by flying it, or just using it with cards that make use of and , one can easily see how powerful and useful Hammer is.
