Speedrunning Elements
A Tutorial by Absol

Before We Start
Hello there. I'm trying my take on this tutorial. This won't probably be very original, and that's why i put in some tips i learned myself.
Read this log here before we start:
Spoiler for Some chatlog when i start:
[07:12] <furbs> Abser makes speedrun tutorial
[07:12] <furbs> Wow that's helpful.
[07:12] <furbs> Exactly what we need! People speeding through the game without enjoying it!
[07:13] <LoremIpsum> well
[07:13] <LoremIpsum> speedrun means you can get to the fun quickly
[07:13] <LoremIpsum> name subject to change
[07:13] <LoremIpsum> it's quick grind if you know what to do, really
[07:14] <furbs> If you want "fun" go trainer
[07:14] <LoremIpsum> i'll try to keep mine unique, with my style
[07:15] <furbs> It's the antithesis to mine lol
"Speedrun" here does not mean mindless grinding. It means efficient grinding. Efficient grinding allows for more time spend enjoying the game. Efficient grinding means you get money faster, but that does not mean you can't enjoy the grind.
This game is very grindy, and that's what drives newer player away (face it, it's the fact). If the grind can be focused, then less grind will be needed, thus more time spend enjoying the game.
Alternately, there's a tutorial by a fellow member, furballdn. Link here: http://elementscommunity.org/wiki/Furball%27s_tutorial

Disclaimer
1. This tutorial will lead you through the fast route. It still provides you the fun route should you want to try something new. Think of this as a map with shortcuts and stuff, but still have the sightseeing route.
2. This tutorial will show some deck, but might miss the link to said thread. All credit to respective owners, which i will try to put under the deck. Use forum search to get to the deck thread itself.
3. By no means is this tutorial perfect. It just shows you the way, you have to do it yourself.

Part 1: Starting Up

Picking your first deck
When starting, you can choose one of the 12 elements as a starter element. From this will you start our way to the glory. So, what element should you pick?

Fun route:
Almost any deck can be used effectively. Just pick an element, and follow this guide to make a good starter deck: http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,1190.0.html
Special mention goes to Aether, Death, Earth, and Life, but feel free to use any deck you want to.

Fast route:
Pick Darkness starter and use either Grabbow, Monodark, or Immorush. Here, i show the modded version.
Deck credit goes to:
Grabbow: Antagon
Monodark: Jmizzle7
Immorush: Annele
Spoiler for Grabbow:
1. Pick the Darkness element as your starting element. Why Darkness? Because it yields the highest starter deck price.
The Starter Darkess will be like this:

9. Fight Level 1 and take the quest reward. Fight Level 2 and take the reward.

10. You should now be able to buy 2 Blessings to replace the 2 last Obsidian Pillars (you might not want to sell the pillars this time).

Your deck should be like this:

Strategy:
Put down Quantum Pillars. Put down creatures and Poisons, grow them when you have a chance to. Set shield immediately to help reduce the damage sustained.
Blessing should be used to Shriekers to make them more sturdy. Momentum could be used on any creature, preferably Forest Spirit to bypass shield while growing in power.
Deflagration could be used for dangerous permanents as needed while Lightning could be used to kill creatures or to help with the finishing blow.

If you can, quickly swap the Dagger with Hammer, as it gives more damage.

Strategy:
Summon Photon and Immolate it to get the quanta needed for Lava Golem. Grow the golems every turn.Momentum can be used at any high attack creatures. Use everything else as needed. Deflag for pesky shield, and Mind Flayers for annoying creatures.

If you can, finalize the decks ASAP, as they are way more effective in their final form. (that does sound like some cliched RPG)

Playing the deck
Take your time to read what each card in your deck do. Understanding the deck is important. Aside from your deck, you should also know what your opponent's deck do. Hover over a card while in play to check what it does. This will be the card learning step, a vital part in playing CCG.
You should also know what card are included in your deck, what do they do, and how much are included. Knowing your deck is half the battle already.

As you progress through the game, you'll notice some weird effect. Feel free to ask weird card interactions in Chat to be helped by your fellow players. You might also notice cards with some sign on the upper part. Those are rare cards, which you can't buy from the bazaar. How to obtain it? By winning it from the spin when you win the game.

Fun route:
Play a game, and carefully examine each new card you encounter. Then, if you're feeling curious, you can test the card later.
Fast route:
Go through Bazaar and read the card description. All of them. Try to think of a certain interesting interaction and how will it turn out theoretically. We'll get to test those later, so don't worry.

Part 2: AI3 and Low Arena

Familiarizing yourself with the deck
By now, you should have owned a decent farming deck. Be it from the fun route or the fast route. You should also have a few cards won from AI3. What's next? Finish that 150 score quest and 500 score quest, of course.
Don't forget to study your opponent's deck, watch out for a new card and interesting combo. You should also learn on how to play your cards, what to prioritize and what not to.

Fun route:
Take your game slowly, thinking of what card would help you the most for the next turn. This way, you'll also learn what to prioritize.
Fast route:
Rush, rush, rush. A few losses could quickly be offset by a faster win. Money is your goal here.

INFO: Oracle
Oracle is that button you can click every day. He will give you new cards and some money. Cards and money, your daily juice. Don't forget to always check the Oracle to fasten your game.
You might notice something called "False God". Just ignore that. It's an unholy abomination you can't beat right now. We will stomp them later, just be patient.
You might also notice something called "pet". Try playing an AI3 after that. You will get that creature to the upper right corner which will fight for you. Only good for 3 games, though.

Fun route:
New cards to be tested! Load up your deck, do some testing, buy some copies of that if needed. Also, examine your pet and try to find out what deck works best with it.
Fast route:
Cards = money. Sell it to improve your deck, or save it for later. I'll say, sell it for the upcoming section.

Building your card library
Here is where the real game starts. Previously, you only just learn how the game works. Now, you get to play it. But how to play it if you don't have any card? Why, build your card library of course.
After each win, you can spin the slot machine up to three times. Every match three will give you the card. Of course this is slow, but you can still learn the game well while grinding. Your goal here are 2: cards and money.

Fun route:
Go change your deck after a while. Sell the cards won from the spin to buy a card you want to try. But remember to also keep winning, else you'll be bankrupt.
Fast route:
Remember that starter deck i gave special mention? Sell all the cards won from the spin to build them. All of them. Why?
Aether: you can learn stall here
Death: rush poison style
Earth: rush splash style
Life: rush combo style
Those technique are important, and besides, those are the most effective decks from the Deckbuilding 101 anyway. You'll need them, sooner or later.

500 score quest
Have you won your 500 score quest yet? Good, good. Now, check this thread, Which Rare Weapon Should I Pick as a Reward? By plastiqe. Link here: http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,3522.0.html
Now, this is only one of the weapons you'll get. You will win them all eventually. In fact, you might have already owned some. So, what to pick?

Fun route:
Pick one of the weapons you don't already have and want to try. Then, from your card library, try making a suitable deck. Alternatively, pick a deck and pick a weapon to put into that deck.
Fast Route:

1. It helps with both the Immorush and Grabbow, which in turn equals faster grinding.
2. You need either 3 Lobotomizers to be used for FG farming, or none at all. Picking 1 might as well waste it in the short run.

Entering Low Arena (As Players)
Arena is full of 500 decks submitted by players. They are then given advantage, such as upgraded (improved) cards, more HP, more starting Mark, and double draw. So, you have unfair start compared to them. Why play?
1. It can give you the rares you needed (or in this case, wanted)
2. Money, dear boy. Especially Silver.

What does Low Arena mean? You see, there are four leagues in the Arena: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Bronze and Silver is called "Low Arena" because they have advantages, but still somewhat easy to beat. Gold and Platinum is called "High Arena" because you can't just go in without preparation. You need high skill to beat High Arena.

This time, we'll try Bronze and Silver arena. Play Bronze for rares, and Silver for money. If you managed to fill all the rings shown when playing Arena, you get one special spin. It's like regular spin, but you can spin the individual reels up to three times to allow yourself to win up to one rare per special spin.

Fun route:
Remember your deckbuilding skill you've learned during your fight against AI3? Use it to build a deck against Bronze and Silver. You might lose a lot against Silver, but the payment is much greater. If you're almost bankrupt, then go play AI3 for some, ahem, "investment" to use against Low Arena. Don't forget to keep an eye to new cards and strategies. When winning special spin, getting anything will do.
Fast route:
Grabbow or Monodark against Bronze, Immorush against Silver. You might use Grabbow or Monodark against Silver and Immorush against Bronze, but it's not tested yet. In any case, just bring the deck you've build here and play while also study the strategies the Arena decks use.

Check this thread for more decks against Low Arena: http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,38675.0.html

Entering Low Arena (As Participants)
You too can submit a deck to your Arena. Remember that card the Oracle gave you earlier? Yeah, you'll get an auto 5 copies of it in your Arena deck. You can't remove or sell it, but you can make a deck which works with that card. So, what should you make?

Fun route:
With your card library, try something new. Show us what you've learned. Faily decks are not bad, you're still learning after all. Don't be afraid to try something new.
Fast route:
You have much more focused card library than the fun route, so you most likely can't always build a deck for any card given by the Oracle. In that case, just dump your Grabbow or Monodark there, and pray for the best. I know, underhanded, but without money, you can't build good deck, you can't expand your library, and in turn you can't make good Arena deck. So be patient.

Part 3: PvP1 and FG

Visiting PvP1
You have learned some strategies by fighting AI3. Now it's time to expand your strategy. How? By playing real player instead of automated grinding machine. Don' worry, you can still collect wealth at the similar rate as playing AI3.
TIPS: don' tab out (switching tabs in browser) while playing PvP1. This will cause timeout and desync. Reducing tabout meaning smoother PvP game.

Fun route:
Try new decks, new strategies, whatever. PvP1 is your lab, and the other players are your reagent.
Fast route:
Grabbow, Firestall, Ghostmare, whatever. You'll be annoying and people will shun you, though. Why don't you just try fun route this once?

INFO: FG
You can now stomp FG, but for a very low winrate. Why would you do it, then?
1. To jumpstart your economy. No more ~15 :electrum per win, now.
2. To familiarize yourself with the FG's deck.
3. Personal satisfaction.

Regardless, there are a few decks which can potentially beat FGs, full unupped or 6 ups. If you want a decent winrate, i suggest you do the 6 ups route. If you want faster but somewhat rather unstable route, pick unupped. I'll recommend you to switch to 6 ups route ASAP, and then to full ups.

Fun route:
Just pick a deck and fight. Fight fight fight! You'll discover a new strategy along the way. Experience is the best teacher, as they say.
Fast route:
Need a fast and cheap way to know how to beat a FG? Here are the decks of the actual False Gods: http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,7919.0.html
Credit to Teffy for that.
Study those decks, think up a theoretical gameplay against the FGs, and think on how to counter those effectively. You have the knowledge by now, use it.

Let's get further into FG.
NOTE: from now on, in the FG section only, i'll only provide one route, the mixed route. Since grinding FG is done mainly for money, you might find the fun in beating a cheating and unfair decks.

Fighting FG, Oracle Way
Every time you spin on Oracle, he will predict correctly the next FG you'll face, provided that you don't log out from the game before facing the FG. Just pick one of the decks listed here and use it against the FG: http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/board,88.0.html
The deck will be perfect counter to that God, so it will have a somewhat high winrate, even unupped or rareless. Don't try fighting other FG using that!
This is more like a bonus for you to start grinding FG and still have a chance.

Now, how to fight unpredicted FG and still stand a chance?

Fighting FG, part 1: no upgrades, no rares
WARNING: please make sure you have at least 500 :electrum before starting the grindfest!
This is somewhat suicidal, since the winrate is like 10%, but the prize, the upped cards won from spin, worth > 1000 :electrum. Which deck to use?
There are 2, all of which are OTK.

With these decks, you might stand a chance against FGs. But remember, it's not efficient, so how to increase your efficiency?

Fighting FG, part 2: six upgrades
WARNING: you'll need at least 9500 :electrum before starting this.
These 9500 electrum might be the hardest part on the game. After this, everything's easy.

With no upgrades, you might struggle to win the battle. With six upgrades, your winrate significantly increases. Isn't that a good thing?

Try these.

They have different strength and weakness, so you might want to try both.
If you have Lobotomizers, i'll suggest you making the RoL/Hope. Either way, those decks are more on less on par, with RoL/Hope having a slightly higher winrate.

Now what? Why don't we make a fully upgraded FG farmer?

Fighting FG, part 3: full upgrades
Since 1.32 came in, Instosis is killed and Poison Dial is crippled. Until someone posted a new variant of Poison Dial, i'll just extend the power of 6-ups FG killer.
We'll proceed to the best FG grinders currently available. The best part is, you can continue your 6-ups FG grinder too for these! Isn't that nice?

Part 4: PvP2 and High Arena

INFO: Upgrading Card
Oh, i'm sure you already know about upgrading card. You need it for your FG farming, after all. But let's repeat anyway:
You can upgrade cards by clicking on Quests -> Upgrade Card. You can see the preview of the cards you want to upgrade, and the upgraded version. This way, you can pick which card to upgrade and compare the difference.
Upgrading a single card costs 1500 :electrum, which is very costly if not for FG. So, don't even dream of having many upgraded cards if you haven't farm FG. That's your biggest cash source.

Fun route:
Here, i'll mention some cards which have high priority to be upped. These cards' upped and unupped version are very different, which allows for new, interesting combo you previously don't have access to.

UnupgradedUpgradeUpgradedNotes
Abomination is a good midhitter for :entropy. Upgraded, Micro Abomination becomes, well, micro... for a very efficient quanta. Try Fractal Micro Abom. Also synergises with BE and have high HP.
Unupped, Diss Shield is only good for Mono Entropy Stall. Upped, it can be put in Stallbow. Deckout deck anyone?
Chaos Seed is a cheap but somewhat inconsistent CC. Upgraded, it becomes a cheap version of Blessing, though still inconsistent. It always grants a +1 | +1 buff, though, so it's very useful combined with those scorpions which need buff to poison.
Mutation: 50% become abomination, 40% become superior mutant, the rest died. Now it will always turn your creature into mutant. And i think we all know how powerful mutant can be...
Mutation on a stick, it gains the same advantage with the Mutation card. Now you can turn all your Skeletons into mutants. And demolish the opposition!
Pandemonium is basically mass Chaos Seed which can also kill your creatures. That's why you couple it with Voodoo Dolls or Immortals. Upgraded, it only blasts opponent's field, and can fit in Mono Entropy without fear your Dragons got self-lightninged.
Virus. Unupped, it can only poison one creature. Upped, it taints ALL opponent's creatures. Now try that with Fractal and Soul Catcher. And witness the horror.
Gnome Rider is like a pillar with :earth cost. Upgraded, it's free, so it worth including in the deck. You know what else is awesome? SS and Fractal.
Ash Eater is just a simple creature. But upgraded, even if it costs :fire, it's still a good rusher AND quanta producer. Fastens your Monofire deck further while crippling your opponent slowly.
Much like Abomination, Phoenix is a good midhitter with anti CC build in. Upgraded, it becomes Minor Phoenix, which is more efficient though weaker. Its 2 :fire cost is cheap, and you can also Fractal them to make a Fractix deck. Beware of Thunderstorm!
Toadfish is another midhitter which change when upgraded. Unupped, it have CC build in, in the form of poison. Upgraded, the poison now affects opponent. Its 3 attack is perfect for Adrenaline. And now you know.
I can't believe i mention this one too, but here goes. Photon is just a photon, 1 | 1 creature not worth using. Upgraded, it acts as a Light Pillar which can also fuels Hope. See that RoL/Hope deck at Part 3? Yeah, that's the one.
Guardian Angel is often thought as a useless card, mainly because it only have 1 attack and also because opponent won't CC any creature not dead on that round. But let's see Archangel. 7 | 7 creature with Heal is just pefect. Similar to Phoenix, i'll say. Hits hard and hard to remove.
Dragonfly is one of those "quanta producer" which costs quanta unupped and free upped. But look at its attack. 2. And it's an :air card. You know SoFr? That shard which lets :air creature avoid targetting? Should i say more?
Flying Weapon turns your currently equipped weapon into a creature. It enables more than 1 weapon active on the field. The catch is its cost, 1 :air. Upgraded, it becomes 1 :rainbow, and you can use it in "mono" decks. Catatitan, Adrenastaff, and Flying Glory comes to mind.
Many things about FFQ has been explained here: http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,42975.0.html
But i'll elaborate. Basically, FFQ has synergy with :light and :life cards, notably through its linker, Rustler. Elite Queen loses that synergy and gain one with :fire instead. Fuel your Fire Lances, Fahrenheits, and everything else. The weakness of FFQ decks are its lack of PC, now try Deflag in your Elite Queen decks.
Firefly produces :light, which have synergy as described above. It is also fractallable to fuel Hope, though not really a practical combo. Elite Firefly has +1 attack and emits :fire instead, so try more aggressive approach for your deck.
Unupped, Sundial costs :time to summon to stop ALL creatures from attacking. Upgraded, it's free. Now you might think that it's not that different, but it is. Now it becomes an "Other" "mini" Dim Shield, which can also accelerate draw if you have :light. Put it in unexpected decks for maximum shock effect.

Fast route:
Pick cards with big versatility to upgrade. Think Speedbow. Browse around the forum and find which card worth upgrading to be placed in many decks.
Check this, Upgrades by smuglapse: http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,9365.0.html
Be warned, though, that the thread is rather outdated. Some of the cards might have changed, but many is still the same.

Visiting PvP2
PvP2 is the higher PvP league. You'll need a few upgraded cards, which is why i put this after farming FG. Decks here contains real threat, more so than PvP1 because newer players usually stay out from PvP2 (they don't have upgraded cards, so if they do enter they won't survive). Now, you have quite a few upgraded cards, so let's jump in!

Fun route:
You want to try your upgraded decks? Yeah, that one? Try it here. As i said, PvP2 is your lab, and the other players are your reagent.
Fast route:
Denial, Speedbow, the return of the Ghostmare, etc etc. Also, SoFo. But i'll say, just do whatever you want here.

Entering High Arena (As Players)
By now, i trust you're wise enough to enter High Arena using your fully upped deck. Now, why bother in High Arena? There are 3 reasons:
1. Rare, via special spin
2. Money
3. Score

The payment is great, much greater than FG (assuming you don't sell upped cards) and if you still miss some upgraded rares, this is your chance. Also, you can grind your score to put up much harder Arena decks.

Fun route:
Make your own deck, and use it. Preferably speedbow. Why? Because speedbow has an advantage of being highly customizable while remains adaptive.
Hover over cards for details, click for permalink
Deck import code : [Select]
6qq 6qq 6qq 6qq 6qq 6u3 6u3 6u3 6u3 6u3 6u3 8pj

Fast, but not that effective after 1.31. Try swapping a SN for another Pillar if you want, this is preferable after 1.31.
Fill the rest yourself, but also balance the quanta.

Or if you want to try PSNbow, check this guide: Add some spice to your grinding! Making a custom SN/EM-Bow. by BluePriest: http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,22524.0.html
Hover over cards for details, click for permalink
Deck import code : [Select]
6u3 6u3 6u3 6u3 6u3 6u3 6ve 6ve 6ve 6ve 6ve

PSNbow is different from Speedbow in that it uses Entropy Pendulum instead of QT (for SN) and use the mark for a "main" element, the element the PSNbow leans toward.

TIPS: For both deck, there's an RNG resistant skeleton, just by putting one more tower/pend, so the skeleton will consists of 12 cards instead of 11.

Be warned! Even though your deck might be fun, with low enough winrate you would actually lose more money, so try to balance fun and profit. As a rule of thumb, ~15% is the required winrate to break even. Try to win at least 20% of the time to make noticeable profit.

Fast route:
Oh well, faster is better. Check this thread for decks used against High Arena: http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,38676.0.html

Entering High Arena (As Participants)
So! I trust you've been at Gold or maybe Plat at this point. That's why you'll learn how to build High Arena decks.
Actually, it's not that different from Low Arena, aside from 2 things:
1. You now have upgraded cards
2. You now have more level, which means more skill points

So, what deck do you build?

Fun route:
Use that upgrade list above to think what fun deck you could make. Also, try to make a deck which use Oracle Card as a core card.
Fast route:
Sigh.
Oraclebow, Ghostmare, Monodeath, Monowater, basically any superfast and very profitable rush. Put SoFo and SoSa.
Also, i'll hate you. I myself don't use this technique, but many did, and many become infamous because of it. Use this at your own risk.

These are the decks efficient to grind in their respective area. But are you content with grinding for the rest of your life?

Fun route:
Of course not! Let's continue to the next section!
Fast route:
Yeah, i'm happy. Let's stop here.

Preparation to competitive PvP
Before you enter, you must have these things.
1. Theoretical knowledge
2. Experience playing many decks
3. (almost) complete unupped card library
4. (somewhat) decent upped card library

Got them all? Good. Then we can continue.

Which event?
There are many events to join, you just need to pick one. I'll list some of them here:
PvP Tournament: Rule here.
Short explanation: A single elimination tournament hold weekly, using fully unupped deck. A special tournament held once every month allows as many upped cards as you can afford in your deck. Each tourney have a specific deckbuilding rule you must follow.
PvP League: Rule here.
Short explanation: A free-for-all battle which everyone can join. This event last three months. It's divided into two league: BL for fully unupped deck, CL for upgraded deck.
War: Last rule here.
Short explanation: A colossal team PvP event, consisted of 12 teams, one from each element. This event is held twice a year. These teams will fight in several rounds till only one remains.
Trials: Last rule here.
Short explanation: An event in which participants are selected till only 12 are remaining, one from each element. These participants will have a right to challenge the current Master to be entitled the Master of their element.
Duels: Rule here.
Short explanation: An unofficial PvP system designed to match 2 players with their preferred rule. You can make your own rule, your own Best Of system, and everything.
Other PvP Events: rule in their respective subforums.
Short Explanation: These are the events with unique ruling and signing up system. If you win, you'll get a nice award under your avatar. Also, you'll be recognized as a badass.

How to win?
Only 2 rules:
1. Play fair
2. Want to win

You don't cheat in PvP event. If you do cheat, then that will be the end of your PvP career. You'll be banned from ALL future events.
You play so you can win the event. If you don't want to win, then you'll just play for fun, without ambition. Then when will you get that shiny trophy?

What else?
1. Using your theoretical knowledge, think up of a deck your opponent is likely to use. Then create a counter for that which can also do well even if not against the deck predicted. This is called "playing the metagame".
2. Build up your deck, and test it. Fix any issue, mainly quanta instability. Make it fast while also deadly. This is called "playtesting the deck".
3. You must own every card you want to use in your deck. Thus, you might want to complete your card library. With a complete library, chance to miss a single card you don't own is significantly smaller. You don't want to be countered just because you forgot a certain card exist, do you?
4. Have some amount of money at the beginning of every round so you can upgrade your card accordingly. Upgrading key cards will do better than just throwing upgrades at any card you currently can put in deck. Using upped Phoenix might be better than using upped Deflag, for example, so get the money to up your Phoenix instead of just throwing your upgraded Deflag to the deck.

Okay. What else?
Nothing. You need experience PvPing in restricted deckbuilding rules to be stronger. So now go! Go and overwhelm your opposition!

GL, HF!

Really liked what you've done with the upgrading cards section. More pretty and detailed than mine.

I'd say that if the tutorial is for newbies, then it's not necessarily a good idea to use abbreviations.  For example, the section on Upped vs. Unupped cards, when talking about Micro Abomination says "Also synergises with BE and have high HP."  HP, okay, that's fairly standard terminology across the gaming world, but what's "BE"?  There's 232 different card types in this game, many of which are called different things when Upped or Unupped.  I'm not sure expecting newbies to know what they all are by their initials is the best way to present clear information.
