Elements Chat / Re: Chats not working.
« on: December 23, 2011, 05:18:23 pm »
Looks like the error log had maxed out which kills the chat. This happened during the worst possible time because of my real life Christmas holiday craziness for the past week or so which led to me not seeing this problem sooner.

I deleted the log and the chat should be working again. I'm really sorry about the inconvenience. I' will try to set up a system that notifies me on my phone when forums, wiki or chat goes offline so that I can fix them as soon as it happens.

Forum Bugs, Suggestions and Feedback / Re: Feedback Manager
« on: December 16, 2011, 10:23:10 am »
It's good to have feedback but promoting everyone to Feedback Manager is not a good idea.

Like Xeno said, this was an error done by me when I added the new membergroup. I forgot to check one box which led to a disaster. Hopefully it works now but let me know if it doesn't. Thanks.

There's still time to nominate your favorite candidates! Remember, you can leave any category blank if you don't know who or what to nominate. Thank you.

Crucible Archive / Re: Meteor | Giant Meteor

its not so much about the meteor being smart, its about the spreading of the impact.  think of it like a bed of nails, if there is just one nail on a board and you try to lay on it, it will penetrate (all damage on one creature).  if you put two nails an inch apart, they may still go in, but not as deep (still big damage to two creatures).  (continue the trend)... if you place many nails over the same surface and lay on it, it will give you a few discomforting pricks (low damage to many creatures).
That might work with nails but this is a freaking meteor we are talking about here. :) Just like the amount of people living in a city does not affect the effectiveness of an atomic bomb, I don't think damage done by a meteor is affected by how many creatures are crushed beneath it. Creatures somehow "blocking" the meteor just sounds weird to me. This card can could kill 4 creatures with 5HP, but when you add the 5th creature, nobody dies. So basically that 5th creature somehow body-blocks the damage done by the Meteor.

The mechanics you are using now sounds more like "Chain Lightning" or something, where the spell has a specific amount of "power", and that power (damage) is divided between all creatures. That makes sense to me. Body-blocking meteors.. not so much. :)

To me AoE using spells is about one thing: how to target your spell so that you can maximize the damage done to your opponents. If they ball up, you throw in a Fireball, they all die, and you are happy. Nothing is more awesome in gaming that taking out a bunch of balled up opponents. But here that fun is mostly missing because:

A) You cannot target it
B) Damage is divided, meaning sometimes the more creatures are balled up, the worse it is for you (all die vs. none die example I gave earlier)

But although I disagree with some mechanics, it's still an interesting idea.

I like the theme.

What I don't like is the fact that they have different areas of effect. It just makes things unnecessarily complex. Increasing the damage would be fine as upped version. I'm also not a big fan of the whole "combined damage" thing because it doesn't make sense to me. AoE spells usually deal the same damage to a specific area. I don't see the logic in the Meteor in being "smart" and dividing the damage.

In my perfect world a card like this would work like this:
- Choose any of the middle creature slots
- Full damage would be done to that slot
- Half damage would be done to adjacent slots (total of 6)

Visual Arts / Re: Award icons for Elements Community Awards 2011
« on: December 08, 2011, 12:11:45 am »
The year looks a bit small, but not bad. It may be better to just have them the same each year, like with War/League award icons and so forth.

I saw this same image in http://www.sxc.hu/ and I think it's definitely something we could use. I'm not a big fan of the letters though. I think mono-color silhouette pictures would look much nicer, preferably so that it looks like the image was molded in the medal.

2011 is a bit of a problem because it's pretty small. And the overall size is pretty big. Maybe we should make it mid size as 24x24.

Sure, but filling out a form leaves no room to justify your nomination.  Hopefully we have a non-biased all knowing and wise council for that.  : P
Yea, I was planning on including "why?" section to some categories, but I was in a rush so I forgot about it. In categories like "Favorite New Member", that "why" would have been useful, in case there are some "that newbie helped me" stories or whatever. But luckily most categories are so that our Council of smart veteran players should be able to pick the best ones.

And in award shows like The Oscars, there is rampant bribery..
We have that too. Thanks for all the codes guys! Keep them coming.

Okay, so here's a hypothetical example.  My 36 card deck is:

9x time factory
9x time pendulum
6x hope
6x flooding
6x rustler

18/36 of my cards are time, thus fulfilling the 50% rule for cards of your own element.

The deck I want to actually play is:

9x time factory
3x time pendulum
6x hope
6x flooding
6x rustler

Which is a 30 card deck, but it only uses 12 time cards.  Could I legally do this for round 9?
that was legal last war, so I would assume yes.
Yes, that is legal. As long as that original "deck" of 36 cards is legal, it's all good. You can tweak your deck as much as you like between duels without having to think about legalities.

@ Event Card:  just curious, another rehash from the Event Card Brainstorm (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,20180.msg274386#msg274386)?

Actually a rehash from a card last war, which indeed was based off your idea.
Not that it matters, but I was actually thinking about the original Sideboard event (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,16210.0.html) by Essence, which was the first instance of sideboard being used. I even said "stolen from the Sideboard event" in the secret section. :)

Originally I was thinking nominations would be done mostly by posting a response (with the option of sending a pm).  That way there would be some discussion on the forums, which is kinda the whole point of having forums - isn't it?  Hopefully there will be more participation once the polls are up.  That being said, here's my picks:
I considered it but I think it would have made the whole nomination thing way too big of a deal. We have a Council of 12 members for situations like this, and they, with the help of community nominations, will discuss and choose the 6-12 best candidates for each category. And after we have the candidates, then we can start the community-wide discussions. It's like with real-life award shows: candidates are picked behind the scenes, and the discussion and voting starts when the candidates are made public.

Google Docs makes the process much more fluid because all the data goes in one place and can be sorted easily. If we used forum replies and PM's, it could get messy really fast. I don't think forum/PM's would be a terrible way to do it, but I think Google Docs just does it better.
