Visual Arts / Award icons for Elements Community Awards 2011
« on: December 06, 2011, 11:11:22 pm »
We need award icons for this: http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,34528.0.html

Two options:

1. Same icon for everyone, hover-text tells the details
2. Similar, but different icon for each category. Clearly the same set, but a bit different.

Any suggestions on how it should look?

Thanks.

Question: any restriction for the non-member related categories? Specifically, do the threads/tools/cards/etc have to be created in the year 2011?
Threads/tools/cards/etc. either have to have been started in 2011, or have seen such a big revamp during 2011 that they could be seen as almost new.

Original idea for this project was posted here (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,34275.0.html) by plastiqe.

2011 is almost over. Thank you everyone who have helped to make this community so awesome. It is now time to award your favorite community members, most memorable PvP events, best card ideas, etc. of 2011. Winners will receive award icons and their name will be written in the pages of Elements history.

We have a total of 18 different categories, each category with 6-12 different candidates. Final candidates will be picked by the Elements Council based on nominations made by the community. You can nominate your favorite candidates for each category by clicking the link below and filling in the form. Remember, you do not have to fill in all the blanks. Just add the nominations you want, add your forum name, and that's it.

>> Open Nomination Form << (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dEs4cmVmTVJBX0wyazZyQVBGUHlnOFE6MQ#gid=0)

Nomination form will be open for 7 days, after which the Council will pick all the final candidates and we will start the polls. If you want to be nominated, now is the perfect time to bump or restart those old projects. Good luck.

I like this card.

I think it's as close to a perfect mark change card as it gets. Theme, art, cost, unupped/upped.. everything fits very nicely. I wouldn't change anything, which is pretty rare.

Only issue is the need for the selection menu. I was thinking about alternative, more simple, ways to do it. Maybe the quanta icons on the left would start to glow and you click one to change the mark? Not perfect but it would simplify things a bit because there wouldn't be a need for a separate menu.

Seems OP to me because of the cheap cost. Compare it to this:

Same cost, almost same stats, but your card has an ability as a bonus. An ability that can easily turn the match to your advantage in many different situations. It needs to be either fast/cheap attacker or a support creature. It cannot be both.

Here's a creature with same stats and an ability. Notice the cost and how the ability costs off-element quanta, while the ability of Psychic is passive and free. Of course there's the downside of being delayed, which is why I would only increase the cost to 3 :aether .

I'm also not 100% sure about the element choice. This creature basically takes a part of a mechanic of :light Sanctuary card and converts it to a 100% :aether card. This is why I would like this creature more as a :light creature, perhaps someone who "lives" in a sanctuary.

But other than that, the mechanics are pretty good.

You may add my gallery here to the list...
Added. Incidentally, would you like to be credited on the card image (in the Art by ... section)?

For the record, I'm adding all of my art to my first post, at least for now.
Same question as above.
Everyone should be credited by default unless they say otherwise. For example in my case I'm not asking for credit because my "art" that I have posted here is done mostly filters and other Photoshop tools, and asking credit for that would feel wrong. But when a person does the art from scratch, I see no reason not to give credit for that person.

Card Ideas and Art / Re: Rice Plant | Rice Plant

I like the concept of growing something and feeding it to your creatures, making them stronger. But I think that Rice Plant might be the wrong choice. Although thematically it fits perfectly with Flooding, it's also kind of.. lame. I mean we have all kinds of Dragons running around, Rains of Fire, Lightnings and Rice? If you want people to get excited about this idea, you probably need to come up with something cooler, maybe even something magical? Maybe like a tree that bears magical fruit or something, I don't know.

I agree that the switch from :water to :life was a good move. Makes more sense this way. Not sure about the mechanics though. Maybe you should try what Zblader suggested. Like... generate a copy when the owner plays a :water card? Um.. maybe not.

If we have Giant Frogs doing 5 damage, I'd say it's safe to give an Emperor Penguin 4 damage. Especially considering that for a frog to be giant it could still be half the size of an emperor penguin.
Yes, but this is a fantasy game and we have no way of knowing the actual size of a "Giant Frog". For all we know it could be as big as a house. Also we don't know how it does damage. Maybe it has some kind of an attack what does not require a big size.

This is different with Penguins because Penguins are not fantasy creatures. We know exactly how small they are, how little they do damage, and how non-aggressive they are. Not only do these Penguins here have a relatively high starting attack, their ability makes them even more aggressive and strong. You made them offensive creatures, when in real life Penguins are anything but that.

Thematically, the best way to use Penguins would be to make them support creatures with a low attack. Making them offensive creatures like this just doesn't make sense to me.
Then perhaps you could explain the Antlion card? As you probably know, an Antlion is a real-life insect, and yet it deals as much damage as this. I'd say a Penguin can do as much if not more damage with an Antlion.

As you said, this is a fantasy game; just because a creature exists in real life does not mean we are restricted to the real-life characteristics of the creature. The Antlion and the Penguin are both magical.
Well, not that many people know what Antlions are, Antlions in Elements look nothing like the real Antlions, and Antlions are defensive creatures, not offensive.

Penguin | Emperor Penguin combined with that image is a very strong evidence that we are talking about just your average Penguin. If you see them as "Magical Penguins", you are more imaginative than I am. I see them as regular Penguins because nothing suggests otherwise and I don't see regular Penguins as offensive creatures at all.

Instead of trying to desperately find arguments why the original theme is perfect, why not just change it to something that fits better even without the "Magical" part, like that Polar Bear Hyro suggested? I mean it's not like mechanically this idea has anything to do with Penguins. Other option is to just ignore feedback and go with what you think is best. Nothing wrong with that.

Well, it will stay a Penguin unless I get art for something else such as a Polar Bear. Plus, if this card were to make it in the game and changed slightly to be more thematic, it wouldn't be the first time.
Polar Bear sounds much better, although someone could argue that then it would need more attack, seeing how big and strong Polar Bears are. If you want to make it less obvious, you could go with something like Arctic Fox or Arctic Wolf.

I messed around with Photoshop a bit, but it was pretty difficult to work with those white coats.

I'm not really happy about the final results because they look too realistic, but if you (or anyone else) wants to use these for something, be my guest. Definitely not suitable for Elements, but could be used as placeholders.

I would like to add that I do not really care what the theme is and I won't lose sleep over Penguins. :) But I will say that I like that cute Penguin art and I would love to see it as a support creature.

Perhaps Submerge will let it go 'under' (avoid) some shields?
Hmm.. I'll think about that, although it sounds too much like Momentum.

I started a topic for the first Construct (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,34496.0.html). Thanks for all the ideas and feedback. I will now lock this topic. If you have more feedback and ideas, please use the topics in the main card section. Thanks.

What happens if you stack rays?
I added the "kills a creature that is already a Monster" effect I talked about earlier. This should make the high cost more logical.

When a creature becomes Monster, it gains +6|+6 but loses all abilities. When the creature transforms back to original, all abilities it had are reinstated and it suffers -6|-6. Note: This can never kill the creature, only bring it down to the minimum which is 0|1.
Does this mean if I use this on a Ball Lightning, it gains 1HP after the effect has worn off?
That is a good question. I removed the special rule to simplify things and get rid of the problem. Now if the Monster goes below 6 HP, transforming back to original creature will kill the creature.
