Spoiler for October NL 2015:
October 2015
WAR #9 HAS STARTED!
NEW WAR MASTER!

  • War #9 has been declared!
Once again, the Elements are clashing for the biggest, most popular forum event!
Defending champion Fire started round 1 with a solid 2-1 but it looks like they will be hard pressed by Air that shows three impressive 3-0 wins so far. Time and Darkness can also harbor some ambitions, not to forget the traditionally weaker Elements Gravity, Life and Water that could benefit from the introduction of shards in this War. Make sure to follow, epic battles will determine which Element will have the honor to reign over the forums!

  • Elemental Conquest has come to an end!
The final match opposed one of our most prolific trophy hunters, RootRanger, to the new and promissing Cardplayer. Cardplayer needed to win the final match 3-0 to take the event but a 3-1 for RootRanger made it all clear, he probably will soon have to move into a bigger place to store all his trophies.

  • Who doesn't like Autumn? Well, I don't. ;D But Zawadx, the winner of September 5th's Autumn - Unupgraded, seems to be a lover of this season. ;) This was his first WT win.  How he managed to achieve this and which decks he used himself, are explained here.

There is a short interview with him in the spoiler below:

Spoiler for mini interview with the winner:
How did it feel to win the tournament for the first time?

It felt great! I haven't had much time for tourneys lately, so it was nice to get something nice the time I could participate.

Did you like rules and the tourney in general?

I did! It was a very simple tourney with a nice theme, but the restrictions made for an interesting metagame.

What was the most exciting moment of the tourney?

I don't think I can single out a moment, my heart was on my sleeve the whole time. I guess the final few turns in my 2nd match vs Heman would be it. He was playing a stally water deck against my pdials, so I was expecting a purify every turn xD

How would you summarize the whole tourney in one very short sentence or even one word?

It was a simple but fun and skill-intensive tourney, the type I hope to see more of!
Congratulations.  We hope it is the first of many WT wins for you. :)

  • Vangelios must have been an avid school attendee, because he won September 12th's Back to School - Unupgraded tournament. He won using stall strategies, by playing these decks. Dismay turned to jubilation, when he thought that he had lost against Afdarenty, but then later realized that he had used an illegal deck. His win was well-deserved, owing to the fact that it was a large tournament of 20 participants, and on the way he managed to win against three masters. Bravo!

  • Let's play the Name Game! How about using the name Zanzarino? Although the name is fabulous, the result was restricted meta and thus predictable decks in Name Game VI - Unupgraded, which took place on the 19th of September. For the second week in a row, the winner of that WT, was Vangelios . Although the choices of successful decks were very limited, he liked the rules.  He hopes that one day they will use his name for the Name Game. ;) He divulged that each of his duels were tense and exciting, and he again shared with us his decks. Congratulations on your consecutive wins!

  • The most beloved child of Oracle was Odii Odsen, who won Children of Oracle - Upgraded, on the 26th of September. It was his third win in row for tournaments in which he participated.  So the next time you see Odii participate in WT, beware, he will likely be unbeatable. ;)
There is a short interview with the winner in the spoiler below:
Spoiler for Interview with the winner:
Did you like rules and tourney in general?

Yes, I liked the rules and the tourney in general but maybe some minor changes could help to improve. Many decks were just easy predicable.

Your choice was Death and it was indeed a perfect choice.  Do you think that your winning was because you accurately predicted that the :death decks were the most powerful ones in that meta, or thanks to good RNG, or because of the cards you later received?  Did you also use mostly :death cards after Round one?

Yes, my choice was Death. I was undecided between :death, :aether, :fire and :darkness. :darkness and :death have the most powerful shields in that meta.  All elements can break through shields because of  Steal, Deflag, Psion and Poison. But darkness and fire would fail to Bonewall decks. So I drop the idea of :darkness and :fire. The reason why I chose :death is, I could win against all other elements. At least I got a chance. Mono death is extremely fast. Especially with upgraded cards. Another reason is just because of Bonewall. In Round 1 I played two mono death decks, of course with Bonewall, even when my opponent had aether as starting element. It helped me a lot. Because he used upgraded Spiders. In Round 2 I had "Bonebolt", so Calin (:darkness and :death) had to play a fractal deck. He played Vamptal two times while I never played bonebolt. Just mono death trying to outrush him. Of course with bonewall again. Why? I saved them for the later turns to stop him from healing while I was loading my damage on the field. In Round 3 I used a fast Immo rush deck and Bonebolt because I expect a mono fire in game 2. It worked. In the finals I played bonebolt again and a weird Poison Immo Rush. Just because it was the best way to beat him with the available elements. 8-0.

What was the most exciting moment of the tourney for you?

I guess it was mindgating this time. It was fun. Because of the rules you could think a lot about your opponents decks.

How would you summarize whole tourney in one very short sentence or even one word?

    Relaxed.
Congratulations.  We will watch to see if the next tournament you participate in will also be won by you. :)

  • Battle League:

It seems like JonathanCrazyJ wants to take it all this season, he leads the Battle League by 90 points over second placed Linkcat, Vangelios and Physsion are close behind and can still hope for the final victory, it is still time to join if you think you can best them!

  • Kuroaitou has recently launched the game Relic Sweeper Some people have already joined, and there's still time to sign up! this game'll be fun, go sign up!

  • eaglgenes101's Elements tag game is still well underway, but players are running out of time as they tag to the death other players!

  • Congratulations to Coffeeditto who has become war master! we hope you serve well in war!

  • Council is now hiring a new Competition Organizer! Go apply, and you could get hired!

Tea Time with antiaverage

Below is the portion of an interview:

Why Anti-Average and not just Average? :P How difficult is the work of being an admin? Why is your avatar a beaver with glasses, and why are the lenses of the glasses entropy marks? (ARTHANASIOS)

My username is from when I was around 12 years old. I was trying to come up with a name that fit me at the time for my AOL Instant Messenger account. I couldn't find a word that I liked, so I made one up with the meaning I wanted. I believe I was going for something like: someone who prefers people and things that are a bit different. I suppose some of that sentiment still applies, but I've grown a lot since then and the name feels a bit childish now. I think this sort of story resonates with a lot of people. Identity is mutable, it grows as you grow, and changes as you change. But sometimes we are stuck with bits of our past, and that's okay. It's part of our story.

Being an admin is more time consuming than difficult. The hardest parts are the same things that make daily life a challenge. Tedious tasks are boring for me, so it takes extra energy to get them done. Interesting puzzles get me excited, like building new features into chat, so usually those are more likely to get done. People are complex, a mix of rational and irrational, so working with others to find a stable and positive solution can sometimes take a lot of energy and patience. But ultimately helping others has always made me feel good, so in the end the work is worth it. It helps that my fellow admins are such awesome people, so that makes whatever is left as my job easier.

Scaredgirl (before disappearing and becoming a series of guest posts) had an avatar of former UFC ring girl Arianny Celeste edited to have the Mark of Death in her sunglasses. As a joke, I found an image of a sloth wearing some classy shades and edited it to use the Mark of Entropy. I have the sloth facing left so it can look at Arianny. Scaredgirl was an inspiration to many of us early Elements newbs, sharing decks that became our first False God grinders and duel fighters. My avatar is both a parody homage, and a thank you.

You chose to put Entropy in your avatar's sunglasses. Is Entropy your favorite element? If so, why?

I like playing with all the Elements (except Mono-Water and Mono-Earth *yawn*). However, Entropy is special to me.

I usually rationalize a bit too much, I approach things a bit more...

The Mourning Sage is a Light/Aether/Air deck based around using the built-in immortality of a flown Morning Glory as a tool to make it deal spell damage via the use of Shard of Wisdom. It excels at having, for the majority of the time, a large amount of spell damage hitting your opponent. Fancy a 24 | 4 immortal, spell damage dealing creature? If so, I think this is a deck for you.

Strategy
Play your pendulums, play the Morning Glory, Animate Weapon it, and throw your SoW on it. This is the main strategy for this deck. If the enemy seems to be dealing just a bit more damage than you'd like, play your Phase Shield to eliminate some of that damage. When your HP starts to dwindle to low numbers, play an Improved Miracle to bring your HP back to good shape.

Card Breakdown

Morning Glory (5x): The backbone of this deck, and your sole source of damage. This card costs 5 quanta to play, and it is a 8 | 4 creature when you use Animate Weapon when you have it equipped. Without this card, this deck would be... well, nothing.

Animate Weapon (4x): Another core card of this deck. Animate Weapon is a part of a 2 part combo of playing Morning Glory, then playing Animate Weapon to summon a 8 | 4 immortal creature. It's also a part of the 3 card combo this deck uses, involving the combo stated before, but with the addition of Shard of Wisdom, to give the Morning Glory an increase in ATK, and make it deal spell damage.

Shard of Wisdom (4x): The third core card of this deck. Shard of Wisdom, when played on an immortal creature, grants it +4 | 0, and makes the immortal creature deal spell damage, which completely bypasses all the shields in the game, except for Reflective Shield, and Emerald Shield. This card is what makes this deck shine.

Phase Shield (5x): One of the sources of defense for this deck. When played, it completely negates all physical damage that would be dealt to you, for 3 turns. Although it can be stole from you in game, usually this isn't an issue, due to your spell damage dealing Morning Glories.

Improved Miracle (2x): The second source of defense for this deck. When played, it restores your HP back up to your max HP, minus one. This card is extremely useful for later in the game, when you have your Morning Glories out and attacking, but you notice that your HP is starting to get low. Just pop one of these, and your HP is back up into good shape.

Light Pendulum (10x): It's quanta. Play it to get quanta so that you can use your other cards.

Strengths
Deals spell damage to bypass most shields
Immune to CC
CC usually not an issue

Weaknesses
Reflective Shield and Emerald Shield can put a damper on things
Prone to bad draws
Denial can put you in a sticky situation

General Thoughts
If you're looking for a deck that can kill your opponent quickly and efficiently,
while feeling nigh un-killable yourself, this is the deck for you.

This card idea of the month is brought to you by Espithel.

More death effects are something that we need to be cautious of, but this late entry is yet another reason why I really wish death nymphs weren't ultra rare. Allowing you to essentially deal with a second creature every time you destroy another has a lot of value to it, and it only stacks and stacks the more of these you play. Imagine a single cat delaying an entire armada of... GotPs.

More importantly, this stacks quite intuitively with bonewall, essentially giving you a third shield for every death. I've always been annoyed how the best way to use bonewall is to just let it be drained. Annoying for an opponent indeed, but requires a good portion of maintenance. Cats are the most efficient way of fueling this, but they're quite brittle.

Regardless, this might be the (second) best death-effect-matters card should it be added to elements, buffing the otherwise newb-only cats/walls deck and making bonebolt even more effective. I do wish this card was slightly cheaper, but the idea of making cat decks playable, or at least getting extra value out of off-element CC, is quite an interesting one.

Discord's War Diary

So it's finally started. The war of all 12 elements, and i don't know a thing about it. I guess just go with the flow of things, but i really wanna make a change. Shards eh? I have plenty of those already, though I never usually use them, I suppose now is as good as any time. iancu's my leader apparently, so i think i'm supposed to follow what he says. If only it weren't so hard. I always liked Entropy though, it never gets boring. Still, it makes me wonder how this is going to turn out. I hope i do well.

What's this? The battle is already starting? I better get out there, i can hear iancu yelling now. Time to go and fight, see what i'm made of...

Spoiler for Discord's War Diary:

No problem.
You might want to get someone to check your Deck Reviews so they aren't redundant or conflicting like this one was, by the way.
