APRIL 2013 |
|
THE END IS NEAR With only 4 teams remaining, Aether appears to have War locked up with a 71 card lead. Does Air, Entropy, or Time have any surprises left for them? Or is Aether just waiting to pick them off, one by one? |
| |
Rounds 5, 6, and 7 Summary - In Round 5, Light pulled off a perfect round of 3-0 to stay alive. Aether was tied with Entropy and Air at 4-2. Life was eliminated that round.
- In Round 6, Entropy rocked with a record of 5-0. Time stayed alive by going 2-0. No team was eliminated, but more teams were placed in a precarious position.
- In Round 7, Air, Time, and Gravity won all their matches to move to Round 8. Up to that point, this was Aether's only match where their wins and losses were within 1 of each other (3-2). Death, Fire, Darkness, and Light were eliminated that round.
| Rounds 8, 9, and Beyond - In Round 8, Air vaulted into 2nd with a 2-0 round. Aether asserted their dominance with a 4-1 round. Earth, Gravity, and Water were eliminated that round.
- In Round 9, Aether had their first .500 round, going 3-3. Had Time and Entropy not won at least one game, they would have been eliminated. Of the 4 teams remaining, none were eliminated.
- Looking forward, Aether has a commanding lead over the rest of the competition. Air has a chance at 71 cards behind, but Entropy and Time are just one loss away from being eliminated.

- Warrior's Preparation is being cut down to a Final Four, but there are matches that still need to be completed. Team Entropy, whose members are Calindu and Spielkind, are guaranteed to move on withTeam Time, containing Kakerlake and RavingRabbid. The other two teams have not been determined yet, but it will be soon!
- The Lost Temple is currently in Round 8! Of the 26 players that originally started, 14 have been squished by a morphing boulder. The 12 that remain are trying to outrun each other through vicious battles that demand keen deckbuilding skills. Keep watch and see who the boulder might squish next!
- Dog Pit is into its second round! Don't bark up the wrong tree, follow these 8 dogs and cheer them to victory!
- PvP World Championship is done with its initial Group Round. Calindu, dragonsdemesne, and Jen-i have survived from Group A. RootRanger, mrpaper, 10 men, and RavingRabbid have survived from Group B. Cheesy111, majofa, and blarp have survived from Group C. Kuroaitou, Odii Odsen, and deuce22 have survived from Group D. Congratulate these fine warriors and cheer them on into the next round.
- Budokan is coming around for the third time! Read the rules and then sign up!
| - Battle League is in its last month before ending. The lead has been taken by dragonsdemesne! He claimed his small lead from Marsu and seeks to uphold it with League has ended! If you think that you can fit the bill, that's quite unfortunate. The deadline for the first battle has passed already.
- Championship League is still dealing with its bane, Blarp. The person who usually uses it has a rather large lead right now and that person's name is blarp. That person has this lead with League has ended! If you think you can take it to 'em, then you will have to wait until next league unless you have done your first battle already.
- I know what you're thinking, rules are for squares! Well, if you don't follow the rules, your wins won't count.
- Do you have a problem with these rules? Do you think the rules should stay the way they are? Do you think that giraffes should be banned from the leagues? Give the League Organizers a piece your mind in the Suggestions and Feedback thread. It's not the suggestion box at your work that your bosses put in place just to make you feel good! Tea Time with Giants: Master of Earth and Overall Great PvP Warrior, mrpaperBelow is a portion of the interview. Q: Why choose the name "mrpaper"?
A: I used to play an rpg online game called Fiesta. I used to be a healer and people we're laughing at mage's armor calling it paper armor. I always found that comparison funny so I used that when I built a mage in the same game. I enjoyed the name a lot and getting some fun with the character and having some praises for the cool name so I decided to keep it for a new game called elements!
Q: Have you always loved the element of Earth?
A: Almost, when I started I picked gravity as starting element for no real reason. I soon got to enjoy the power of pulvy with the duo. But I didn't like earth that much then because I couldn't really use all the earth cards at their full potential. But as soon as I got most of the unnupped cards, earth was a favorite.
Q: When you aren't doing Elements-related things, what are you doing?
A: Digging earth ofc More seriously though, I'm a lot into sports and since I'm canadian... it's hockey of course, whether it's playing or watching a game with a cold beer (if you're under 18, and reading this... I meant soda!).
Do you find mrpaper to be tearably funny? Then click here. - Hazardus10 has convinced the Council that he is worthy of being the latest Bug Hunter! Be sure to help make his job smoother by only reporting bugs that haven't been seen before and researching your bug before submitting it.
- Admit it. You build a deck, and it usually fails. You think, this will do great, (with a QI of 99). Well if you are frustrated by this, then imagine how much you will rejoice knowing that there is not just one, but TWO whole new Deck Helpers! Calindu and inthisroom have been in cahoots this War with Team Entropy, but now they will be joined eternally (kind of) by their new role. These great fellows will help you develop deckbuilding skills and keep the Deck sections tidy. Congratulate them for taking on such a task!
- The Guildmasters have a nice announcement. When guilds are finalized, they will release a monthly crossword for a Guild Point reward! Why not practice with this fine crossword.
- Due to abuses of bots and scripts in chat, the Chat Moderators have come to the conclusion that they needed a policy concerning these bots and scripts. In short, bots and scripts or any attempt to trigger them will result in a ban. If you would like more details, click on the turquoise caption. (UTAlan's Average Potato, when it is up and functioning, is excluded from this rule because it is informative, and admin controlled).

This month features a deck which at first sight may look like a "only for fun" deck, but playing with it proves otherwise. It's not only fun, but it's pretty fast too, doing heavy damage quickly.
As its colorful name suggests, this deck is an explosive surprise. You won't do much damage when the match starts, but by the end of it, you'll probably kill your opponent with 40+ damage, breaking almost any defense.
There are many strategies to play this deck, but I'll point out only the 2 that look best:
- The first one is better if your opponent has any kind of defence: Play Doll+Overdrive as soon as you can then try to get SoP down, once it has about 20 attack or so take the SoP away and twin the doll, that will probably lead to a 2TK.
- The second one is mainly for those that like to rush, basically SoP+Overdrive the dolls till you can twin it, after that don't SoP anymore and go for the kill.
Just by taking a look at strategies you see that you need 3 cards to start rolling. Sure, this requires a little luck, but that's where "bravery" and precognition step in. Those 2 cards make the deck play much smaller, making your draws a lot smoother.
Now the fun thing about this deck: it's customizable! By looking at the deck's skeleton, you can add cards to your own liking.
Of course, some cards are better suited to be added than others, but here are the usual options:
- Shard of Bravery: Not even a doubt about it, this shard makes your draws cleaner and smoother.
- Another Shard of Patience: Having 3 of those helps in drawing a early one.
- Another Twin Universe: This way you can rush faster and get higher damage output.
- Rage Elixir: This adds a lot of damage without the need for waiting.
- Sundial: This is more for those that like to stall, but it can help with drawing.
- Gravity Pull: In case you have a doll that sits and does nothing, this will keep you alive and deal some damage.
- Epinephrine: Shard of Patience + Epinephrine is a cool combo, even cooler when you add Overdrive and Twin Universe in the mix, all on a single Voodoo Doll.
- Explosion: Mainly for annoying shields and sundials, as weapons will be delayed by Shard of Patience+Voodoo Doll combo.
While this deck may not be the fastest or the best, it's very funny and certainly not slow, adding a fresh taste to Shard of Patience combos.
Here it is, the card that won the original Card Design War! With stats like 0/4 and a cost of 6
, an initial glance makes one believe it is very underpowered, but its ability more than makes up for it. If you can play it early enough, you can make your opponent think twice about playing any cards with abilities.
This creature is airborne, so it can ignore
Wings and benefit from
Shard of Freedom. This creature can target any other creature or permanent in play that has an Activated Ability - yours or your opponent's. That may not seem that great, but there's a little more to it. If you use one of your opponent's abilities, they won't be able to use it, because it will still be in 'cooldown' during their turn. For creatures that have any kind of growth ability, the spirit gets the stat increase. In addition to using your opponent's ability, it also uses their quanta for the ability. So it can be a form of pseudo-denial.
Now let's compare this to a couple of cards similar concepts in game.
Imp Spirit v Lobotomizer
Lobotomizer
Playing Cost [3
] + Lobotomize (Mono Cost) [2
] + 1 card + 5 damage a turn
Imp Spirit
Playing Cost [6
] + Corrupt (Mono Cost) [2
] + 1 card + new ability
Of course there is a big difference between a Weapon and a Creature, and that difference is Weapons are cheaper for the damage and ability. Also, Lobotomizer is a rare, but just because something is rare doesn't make it over powered. From this mono-perspective, Imp Spirit appears to be balanced.
Imp Spirit v Mind Flayer
Mind Flayer
Playing Cost [2
] + Lobotomize (Duo Cost) [1
] + 1 card + 2 damage a turn
Imp Spirit
Playing Cost [6
] + Corrupt (Mono Cost) [2
] + 1 card + new ability
Mind Flayer has a much lower initial cost, and a cheaper ability, but this card is a duo card. Imp Spirit is a mono, and though it doesn't Lobotomize the opponent, they can't use it next turn and uses their quanta, so its cost is justified.
Duo Possibilities
[
|
]
As if Ghostmare decks weren't powerful and useful enough, modding it to use this card could create great benefits. If your opponent does manage to pull out a creature, you can use its ability to suck the opponent's quanta dry. Hand denial AND quanta denial could be very scary.
[
|
]
An unupped Imp Spirit already has 6 HP. Though bringing Shards into strategy might be borderline taboo, but imagine the devastation one can cause in unison with
Shard of Focus. Using Accretion on an Imp Spirit may allow it exceed 45 HP. From there you can
Gravity Pull it and have an amazing defensive wall.
[
|
]
Imagine 12 Vader Saders. Though this potential may be a little unrealistic, you could use Imp Spirit's ability on a
Crusader to gain the vampire bonus and 4 attack. Then, the next turn, just simply let the
Crusader itself Endow the
Vampire Stiletto.
Want to make this even more of a Community Newsletter? Find out how, below.
Get Famous - This should bring out your competitive side. What we want is a picture that best represents a False God in real life! This can be ANY picture, but you need to abide by the rules underneath...
- If you did not make the picture, you MUST provide the source (where it came from), but if you did make the picture, then awesome for you!
- Send in your picture via PM to both whatifidogetcaught? and Opsinis. Make sure the subject says something along the lines of "Picture for Newsletter". NOT "no subject" or "YOU GUYS SUCK"
- You can send in more than one picture, but there is a limit of 5.
- Ignorance of the rules will result in the ignorance of your picture
| Unmentionable Glory - Maybe you don't want glory, but you do want to help out with a Newsletter-related article. Well, a great quest awaits for those who are willing to contribute without mention.
- You can help out with the next monthly interview! Just read the regulations below.
- You will be creating generic questions for the next interview. You might ask, "What is a generic question?" Well, a generic question is a question that can apply to anybody in the forum. A good example would be: "Have you ever reached Rank 1 in the Arena?" not "What do you see when you look into my eyes? I LOVE YOU." Why? The second question is overly private and would get us fired. These questions can range from humorous to serious. Nothing rated R for movies or M for video games!
- Submit these questions via PM to both whatifidogetcaught? and Opsinis. Make sure the subject is something along the lines of "Questions for Interview". NOT "no subject" or "Who r y'all fin 2 intarvew?"
- Ignorance of the rules will result in the ignorance of your questions
- Thanks to Zblader for submitting the winning picture this newsletter! The task was to find the best real-life picture that best represents Elements! If you aren't the best and finding these things but still want to contribute, brainstorm in the Newsletter Feedback thread! If you come up with a great idea, we will use it and you will have your name mentioned.
