BUDOKAN RULES

Budokan is an group tournament that turns the winning group against itself to establish not only who is the best team player, but the best individual PVPer as well.

The first stage of Budokan is the Proving of Worthiness, in which three teams of 12 members compete for the right to move on to Stage 2.

The second stage of Budokan is the Proving of Self, in which the team of 12 battles among itself to determine who is deserving of the title of Budosei, the Warrior Saint.

Budokan Stage 1: For Honor

For this stage, 36 players divide into 3 Squads of 12.  Every player is assigned an element -- one per element per Squad.

Element:Squad OneSquad TwoSquad Three
:aether PlayerNamePlayerNamePlayerName
:air PlayerNamePlayerNamePlayerName
:darkness PlayerNamePlayerNamePlayerName
:death PlayerNamePlayerNamePlayerName
:earth PlayerNamePlayerNamePlayerName
:entropy PlayerNamePlayerNamePlayerName
:fire PlayerNamePlayerNamePlayerName
:gravity PlayerNamePlayerNamePlayerName
:life PlayerNamePlayerNamePlayerName
:light PlayerNamePlayerNamePlayerName
:time PlayerNamePlayerNamePlayerName
:water PlayerNamePlayerNamePlayerName

Each of these elements has three players associated with it.  At any given time, one of those three players is the Champion of that element, one of them is the Challenger of that element, and the third is an Aide for the other people on his team (i.e. not participating in that element's fight.)  At the beginning of the Budokan, These roles will be randomly assigned so that each Squad begins with 4 people in each role.

Each round, the Champion and the Challenger fight, and the Aide sits out.

If the Champion wins, the Challenger and the Aide switch roles.

If the Challenger wins, the Challenger becomes the Champion, the Champion becomes the Aide, and the Aide becomes the Challenger.

If for any reason the match doesn't happen, it's treated as a victory for the Aide.  The Aide becomes the Champion, the Champion becomes the Challenger, and the Challenger becomes the Aide.  If any one player misses more than one match in a row, that player is disqualified and will be substituted from someone in the substitution thread.

Rule change:
-If both teams do not make an attempt to play then the rule stands.
-If the Challenger does not make an attempt the Aide becomes the Challenger, Champion stays Champion.
-If the Champion does not make an attempt the Challenger becomes Champion, Aide becomes Challenger.
-If both Champion and Challenger make a legitimate effort I to meet up but can't the Champion will stay Champion and Challenger becomes Aide. This is not set in stone though and i will make a decision upon individual cases.

Elements: The fighters must use decks that are entirely of their element, except for up to 6 cards per Aide on their Squad -- but those 6 cards must be from the elements that the Aide belongs to.  For example if I'm the Challenger of Aether, and I have 2 Aides on my team, Darkness and Life, I could make a deck that has 6 Darkness cards, 6 Life cards, and the rest Aether.  For purposes of deckbuilding only, all Pillars and Pendulums are considered "other" cards and don't count toward your limit of cards-per-element. 33% of your deck must be in-element. Quantum Pillars and Shards are banned from this tourney

Upgraded Cards: The Champion is allowed to use 6 upgraded cards to represent his dominance.  In addition, for every Aide on their Squad, each Challenger may use 2 upgraded cards. Yes, this may mean that a Challenger brings more upgraded cards to a match than the Champion if he has a lot of Aides on his Squad.

Winning:The first Squad to have Champions in more than half of the Elements (i.e. at least 7) wins the Proof of Worthiness and moves on to Stage 2. Rounds are best out of 3 and you can change your decks in between rounds.

Deck Posting: Winners and losers must provide their decklist in the battle result thread/post. A short matchup review / play-by-play is recommended but not necessary.

Budokan Stage 2: the Proving of Self

In the second part of the Budokan, the 12 members of the winning Squad face off against one another in best-of-five matches decided at random.  The goal is simple: don't get skunked.  Each time a player loses three-to-zero, they are eliminated.

Once four players are eliminated, the remaining 8 join in a cutthroat single-elimination tournament to determine the Budosei as well as the 2nd and 3rd place champions.

The deckbuilding rules are simple: each round, you MUST have at least 3 cards in your deck that belonged to your Element from Stage 1.  The only other deckbuilding restriction revolves around upped cards.
In the first substage, there are no upped cards allowed, period.  In the second stage, players may use 10 upped cards in quarterfinals, 20 in the semifinals, and 30 in the finals.

The Budosei will gain this special forum icon to indicate their abilities in the Budokan:

Really bad rule. Open for exploit.

Good point. I'll work on some way of resolving that.  What do you think of this: if the match doesn't happen, both contestants are dishonored, and the Aide and the Champion switch roles?

:)

Than it's open for exploit other way around. You can deliberately avoid the Champion match to dethrone the Champion. With that kind of cheap trick Part 1 may last for a long time :)

I'd say: Let the Aide become the Champion and auto-win next round. That way both Challenger and Champion are punished.
It still favours one of the players (whoever is the challenger after this) but this is about the best you can get. The problem is that you have an asymmetry of roles so you cannot punish the players equally.

Another option would be to remove both players from the event and replace with someone else.
