IIRC, the betas for Factions, Nightfall & Eye of the North were all open. No need to compete in anything.
Wasn't it like that for Prophecies?

I have no idea. I joined Guild Wars about 6 months after launch.

I'm 99% sure that GW2 will have a closed beta (like all MMO's) but apparently this closed beta will be much shorter than usually because they said they will do a lot of testing internally.

Open beta usually lasts about a week and that's not enough time to test everything. Also the problem with open beta is that EVERYONE (and their mother) wants in, which is technically impossible, so there must be some kind of limitations. This will make it closed beta by definition.

I'm sure they will have some kind of dumb competition like all developers do. Hopefully it's something where I can produce a "funny" GW2 video and win that beta access.

Or it could have a boring "Sign up for Closed Beta" thing, where they just pick people randomly.

They will have that one for sure and 95% of beta spots will be given that way so they can test the game with all different computer specs for low to high-end.

But on top of that there are always some kind of competition, that usually has something to do with producing pictures, videos, sound, something like that. I'm relatively good at those things so all I need is 4-5 hours and a computer, and that beta spot is mine for sure. If the competition is an easy one, I'll try to win a spot to couple a of friends also.

Man, I can't wait for GW2.

I am willing to take someones life to get into beta. No joke.

Hopefully they will have some kind of beta access competition like Age of Conan had. I made this dumb Christmas video and got second place and an access to beta. First place would have been a free trip to Oslo, Norway.

i used to play FLYFF (Fly For Fun) but it gets really boring after a while since it doesn't have the storyline like guild wars, and it gets kinda lame running around and seeing people with like glowing armor who are level 40000 (exageration) and i know that i would never have the patience to do that

I used to play runescape before, long time ago. Started to play less and less WoW, and finally stopped to play.

i am sure this has already been put out there but you should try Sacred Season MMORPG.  Sadly it is a bit redundant and requires a team effort for pretty much everything. if you can find someone to drag you through the few hundred levels then you will be good.  If you are looking for it, you can easily find it on kongregate.com <-- shameless plug.  once you get a few hundred levels you can earn gold and slowly buy good stuff. enjoy

Well, I did try Runescape, 4story, Last Chaos and a couple others but they weren't my thing.
I play GW, and maybe I'll start with Aion or so its called. From the same Developers and when you get a certain edition you get a special command so that you can have a wing emoticon in GW =D

I was a hardcore wow player that stopped almost a year ago... RL issues + disliked WotLK.

Aside from that I played UO for a while.  Loved the PvP/PvE/Crafting in that game...  I don't know what its changed to.
