Possible changes to tournament signing up https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=8071.msg91243#msg91243

I was the organizer in last Saturdays Western Tournament, and I once again encountered this problem we've had before.

32/32 people signed up. On top of that we had about 20 reserve players. Things were looking great.

But when the tournament started, there was only about 20 people in chat. About HALF of the players who signed up, didn't show up. Luckily we managed to get some players from main chat so we had a pretty good 27-player tournament.

I spent about 30-45 minutes updating that tournament thread that week, adding/removing players to that list. All that work was for nothing because in the end I ended up just taking everyone who showed up in chat. Also I'm not going to waste more of my time giving warnings to people who don't show up because there's so many of them.

This is why we need a new system.

This is what I propose:

- no signing up beforehand
- everyone who shows up in chat, gets to participate
- if we have more that 32 players, first round will be a quick best-of-one match lasting about 10 minutes

Opinions?

great!

AND, if anyone drops out during tournament, hell auto-lose this "qualifikation round" the next week.

sounds like a decent idea to me.  I haven't signed up the last couple times since it was already full by the time I knew what my Saturday schedule was like.  I guess I should have just shown up anyway.

I like it and it makes sense.

Edit: I just realised that it could provide some problems with respect to identifying people on the forum (which is needed to distribute prizes) from those on the chat as well as their IGNs.

What if our internet connection just happens to stop working for a few minutes? Mine does that a lot.

I guess my point is that since rounds are supposed to take a maximum of 45 minutes, if someone "disappears" during their match, they shouldn't be judged as "dropped out" until the time is up.

Disconnects and such are unfortunate but we cannot really stop the whole tournament and wait for one player to show up. According to rules, a player has about 5 minutes to show up, and if he doesn't, he will be replaced.

Oh and it's 30 minutes from now on. I used this "30 minutes rule" last Saturday and it worked like a charm. Only 2 matches lasted about 35 ( I gave them 5 minutes extra) while all the others were finished on time.

YES! I like it!

The only reason I have not yet played in a tourney was because I missed the sign up!

That or I wasn't 100% sure I would be free that date/time and this solves both of those!

This idea would work. My only concern is what would happen if we get a lot more than 32 people, or a lot less.

I have no problems with stopping sign ups, but going from total organization to utter chaos could prove problematic. Couldn't we open a thread, say, one hour previous to the tournament where people signed up? This way people would be much less likely to sign up, then not make it. (you should know what you're doing an hour ahead). This would solve the problem of handing out prizes through the forum, and it would keep the tournament organized, not on a very easily disrupted system.

However, i'm really not a fan of this 1-game round thing. I think that, if we use this one-hour previous sign up system, then any reserves at that point (or those who sign up after 32 have already signed up) would have to go through this round. I'm not sure if it would already work like that, but so many good decks can lose one game on a bad draw.

note: with this thread, you wouldn't have to show a list of all names and edit them, you would just use the thread to get forum names / ign and to organize brackets.

I really don't like the 1st round 1-game thing as like bojengles said it's really easy to lose 1 game even with a good deck...if you're looking to cut down on the time what if you split the tournament into two simultaneous tournaments if the player count exceeds (or even reaches) 32

I would agree with this, but there area  few problems. 1: gettin 2 tournament organizers willing to run the tournaments. 2: with 2 tournaments, there are twice as many rewards and easier wins from tournaments, so winning nymphs might become too easy.
