You're right. I got Coward mixed up in my head with Brave. Okay, so not pairing Coward and Weak is not so bad, and in fact really good! Not pairing Brave and Weak can make Brave less useful.

I don't think a "bye" would need any special reward or penalty. Getting the bye itself is a kind of reward: you advance a round without fighting. On the other hand, your opponent will gain a strength from the round you skipped, so your lack of extra strength is the compensation for the "easy" advancement (without the need of fight). So I think its automatically balanced.
