The idea behind this would be as an experiment. Can a card game run by it's fans maintain a fun and balanced game?
EtG has been one of the most balanced CCG I've ever seen, but only because it doesn't have a bajillion cards. MtG, Yugioh, whatever, they all are afflicted by power creep. New cards make the old completely obsolete. There is no innovation, only making more powerful cards so that consumers will buy buy buy spend spend spend.
Now, if we had a community run project as a spiritual successor to EtG, could we keep from running it into the ground in the same way? Everyone says that they want more content, more cards, more everything. Well can we do that while still maintaining an atmosphere where every card is valuable, useful? Or will we find ourselves with a few thousand card types where a small handful dominate the meta?
Furthermore, Zanz has made it abundantly clear that he will not hand over the keys to his kingdom to anyone else. If you want to make changes to what he's done, you're going to have to make it yourself. Sorry
I honestly think an open source card game could be great fun, and with a strong community like this behind it, there's certainly potential.
