I want to discourage people from creating alts or intentionally losing or bringing bad decks in round 1.  It's incredibly patronizing to the newbies to hand them a free win, it's unfair to the newbies who do have to battle it out in the first round and it doesn't help them learn anything about PvP, which is part of what these newbie competitions should be about.

Understood. When you put it that way, I agree.

Would participation require a forum account?
My default opinion of a new card is OP. Your job as a card creator will have to be to convince me otherwise.

Would participation require a forum account?
Sure, standart weekly tournament procedure will apply (with the exception of required minimum posts, I suppose)
That means forum acc, chat acc, deckcheck, posting results in the topic etc etc.

In a way, these tourneys would be "training" the newest players how to participate in tourneys.  If we ask them to do all of the above, then they will already know what to do when the get to the weekly tourneys and other events.  An outstanding idea!

How about removing the minimum post requirement from the weeklies and ask ppl to participate in one or two of those training camps?
Also think about a formulated tutorial session, some time before start of the event about posting wins, standard pvp preocedures, SS etc

If this gets off, I am willing to help anyway I am asked to and if you explain how to figure out which code is which, I can chip-in for rewards.

A newbie tournament is probably the best community building idea I have heard in a long while!

As for "new players" concept, i think anyone below Gold qualifies.
Either that, or <30 posts.

This is a cool idea. But I'm still not clear on how you define 'new player'

That sounds like a great idea! I think the best way to classify as a 'noob' is either
1. They say they are a noob (new to the game in their introduction thread, if they posted one)
2. Played the game < 2 weeks (could be 4 weeks also or some other number)
3. They have < X upgraded cards (X to be decided)

Worst case scenario for these:
1. Too easy for someone with experience, who is new to the forums, to sneak through.
2. Possible. You may have a hard time finding enough people to participate - Not to mention convincing them to join a comp
3. 'I don't have upgraded cards...' (Not sure if there is a way to check this?)

Of course, that's a very negative approach to those ideas.

Other ideas that come to mind are:
- Score (Similar issue to upgraded cards)
- Honesty policy (Abusable...obviously)

I'm genuinely interested to see this idea come to fruition!
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish...and he will sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

I think this is a great idea if you can make it work.  Just participating in an organized event would be valuable in prep for the weekly tournaments.

with score you can use a screenshot but that screenshot would have to be of whatever account they use in the tourney. Still... I can easily bring myself down to negative score if I wish.
