One other option is to change the virus ability to killing the target at the end of the next round. The virus would die the round they used the ability, people would know that someone is going to die the next round, but only the effected player would know they had been targeted. Virus are some of the most powerful civys, if they have common sence. Last mafia, viruses went ballistic and aimed for random guys(BC was plain bad, and terro realized only a little too late of his mistake). However, in other mafias, viruses have been very effective(2 Fgs killed in mafia 15, for an example). Viruses are supposed to think in depth their movements and make a decition carefully,  not go ballistic or rush up the kill and end the investigation after the kill.
I think vigilante is a little lame, all it gives is an extra vote(not so useful as other vote manipulation skills).

I dont really see how does it change something for the virused guy, it seems like an unneeded change.

Alternate option: remove it entirely and replace it with something else. For example, Parasite: Target a player. That player will die at the end of the next turn. This ability can only be used once every other turn.

However, if that doesn't sound good, I say tie it in with the liar.

or better yet:
phoenix: on death, become ash (different from immortal as this can be used multiple times)
ash: if another person is willing to sacrifice himself for immolation, revive phoenix (half a vote)
(obviously, the ash can't contact people)

It's a whole turn slower, it can only be used half as much, and it doesn't get past shrieker.

That's actually a really good idea. Might incorporate something similar if make another ruleset for mafia.

who would sacrifice for somebody like this?  This is mafia, the only guys who are worth such a thing are oracle and doc(which are known by only a few civys, and i dont think this should reveal roles, because if it did, once relived they would be killed to oblivion).

This would be good, although i still think all we need are smart guys using virus(or oracle asisted targeting).
