Mind Flayer: The ability seems aetherlike to me, but the card doesn't really fit water in my mind.  I'm not really sure where I'd put it, though.  From AD&D, mind flayers usually lived underground, so maybe something like earth or darkness.  They were also not very nice, and liked killing wandering adventurers, so maybe death? :p  I think Darkness would be the best fit.

Crusader. The card itself fits light, but the ability does not. Indeed, it is a parasitism kind of ability. Those are the ''thing'' of darkness.
I disagree, because Crusaders are soldiers being led by an Elemental, similar to how the the Crusades were supposedly led by brave kings and whatnot. Light is Not Necessarily Good (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LightIsNotGood), and it was common for supposedly righteous knights to break the code of chivalry behind people's backs.
Never said it was meant to be good. Parisitism is only using the other. More like altruist/egocentrism.

You will notice that Water's theme involved a bunch of duo creatures whose abilities fit another element. Also don't forget that 2/3 of illithids are in water/brine. (If you count the brain as an illithid)

Just like Holy Water is the bane of Vampires, Holy light is the bane of everything that's dark. Holy Light is just so bright it hurts! If anything fits the theme of:light, it's being the bane of darkness, Holy Light is perfect.
I disagree on the fact that light should hurt. Why not turn attack to 0? It would make more sense for light to disable than kill.
Go look at the Sun. Does that hurt? YES. So it does fit thematically to hurt. The disabling of sight in real life would be more of a 'side effect' in EtG, if disabling is implemented.
It is the greatest mystery of all...

While that may be true, I also think that water doesn't fit as well as darkness. In all Dungeons and Dragons I've played they have been underground creatures, not underwater. A murky wet cavern is one thing, but when I think  :water , I think oceans and seas.

Now, Gargoyle. Why is it dark, other than it's appearance? It's making itself bigger (life, earth, gravity) or changing its form (entropy). It doesnt fit dark well at all

Thematically?  Or are you talking metagame.

In terms of metagame, this is really easy to do.  Pick a card.  Try to base a deck around it.  Is that deck the same element as the card?  Than the card is in the wrong element, metagame wise.

A good duo card:  Deadly scorpion.  You can put that EITHER in a death deck OR in a light deck.
A bad one:  Parasite.  Parasite /has/ to go into a death deck, metagame wise it doesn't fit.

Thematically:  the only reason graboids evolve into shriekers is because of a movie reference.  Earth, as an element, has nothing to do with evolution, and has no other evolution cards in it.
