I am looking for possible mechanics that target the field locations where the creatures go.

Each mechanic will be triggered when 1 of 4 things happens:
is put on an enchanted location.
is attacking while on an enchanted location..
is using a skill while on an enchanted location..
is removed from an enchanted location.

I'm not really a big fan of targeting field locations since some spots of the field are never used at all and some (like the center) Are almost always taken.

Land = Creature slot

Problem: Hostile land enchantments have problems because they always prefer slot 1.
Solution: All hostile land enchantments are random and probably entropy.

That still leaves:
Hostile spells that target land but do not enchant. [Old suggestion]
Beneficial land enchantments.
Beneficial spells that target land.

I dunno...Beneficial lands make me think yu-gi-oh and Ive been seeing a LOT of yugioh based suggestions recently (not to mention a direct rip off seconds ago)

The problem I see with this mostly is that creatures have an automatic placing system, so yeah its hardly fair to use. Flooding is basically one of these cards as well. That made me think we need an :air permanent that allows players to choose creature placement.

Burst buffing AoEs that have a duration are more D&D.

Personally, I think field targeting would be a nice mechanic to add. As others mention, the main trouble is the automatic positioning system. Adding in cards and / or abilities that allow players to move / shift creatures around the field would be an easy fix.

For example:
   Wormhole ability:  :gravity shift target creature to a random location on the field, usable multiple times in a round.
   Astral Shift:  :aether this creature switchs positions on the field with target creature you control
   Shadow step: :darkness move this creature to target slot on the field.
etc.
Such abilities or spells would allow players to make full use of field mechanics which I think it would add a nice layer to the game.

On another note,
Moomoose had a nifty idea for a series of field targeting cards:

He's proposed one for each element. They add a small buff to adjacent creatures.

White(Black) hole 15(18) :gravity and all remaning  :gravity quanta: unupped moves creatures to the outer rim and give +0/-1 upped moves creatures to the in side of the field and give+0/-1 for every space moved  creatures are destroyed if there are not enough spaces large creatures would survive not little ones :P great synergy with floodling/inundation :)
