Elemental Breakdown : Water https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=22384.msg284237#msg284237
« on: March 06, 2011, 12:20:51 am »
Well... I was going to do Aether or Other. :(
Alright then, here's the Elemental Breakdown for Water thread! (Special thanks to Emeraldtiger for starting the series of threads on this.)

Thread Primary Goal: Fully Define what fits and does not fits in the theme ofWater.
Thread Secondary Goal: Define Water so new mechanics/cards can be created.

My Views:
Water is the Element of fluidness, ice, and essence.
- Fluidity - Water flows, from one place to another. If it's flow is dirsupted, it is often so by another element, like Earth and Life.
- Ice - When frozen, Water becomes ice. Ice is often represented as being a powerful force that can harm beings but it is also a very gentle and beautiful entity, as represented by snowflakes.
- Essence  -  Water is present almost everywhere we go, and is one of the major reasons life is present on earth.  Water counters well, but also syncs well with  :death and  :fire .  Many of water's cards often prompt synenergies between elements.

Quote from: The Elements Wiki
Ice, alchemy and aquatic beings are under the control of Water elementals. Some examples of Water elementals skills are: “Freeze”, “Ice Bolt”, and “Purify”, which is used to remove poison. Water elementals have a good balance between offensive and defensive skills.
Some things to know:
  • Interpreted as the "purifier" in various cultures including  Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Taoism, and Judaism.
  • "Holy Water" is a common concept that is believed to ward off evil spirits and kill vampires evil entities in general, as well as curing status effects.
  • It is one of the four "classical elements" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_elements) in many cultures, described as "Cold and Moist".
  • There are numerous gods (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_deity) named for water, some examples being the Greek Gods Tethys and Poseidon.
  • Water's chemical makeup is H2O, 2 Hydrogens and 1 Oxygen.
  • Water is dubbed "the universal solvent" as many substances can dissolve within it.
  • Alchemical symbol for Water:
Water's Current Role in Elements-the-Game:
  • WIP.
What Water lacks:
  • WIP
The Communities View of Water:
  • I am not exactly sure of this yet.

Contemplate.
... I think I'll just be original.

Life needs water. Yes, however, water does not need life.

Water right now is the most flexible deck.

Water/aether is a duo
Water/air is a duo
Water/darkness doable, essence wrecked me with it once
Water/death is a duo
Water/earth is a duo
Water/entropy is a duo, nova into tears
Water/fire is a duo
Water/gravity is... well... um...
Water/life is a duo
Water/light is a duo
Water/time is.. uhh... awkward...

But none of these duos fit well together.

If you go water light, you're miracle stalling, which is completely different from steam rushing, which doesn't play at all like water/life does, and none of these go like water/death does.

The problem is water has no convergence.  Water has a ton of great duos but no center, no unifying feature throughout all of these decks.  I think this can be solved with a slight flooding buff.

Flooding:  Non-water Non-neutral creatures in the top and bottom row are instantly killed.  Water creatures abilities cost water quanta to use.

Now all of those half-collapsed war decks can actually be worked together into something decent.

Finally a good flooding buff suggestion.

Quanta conversion like Quanta Locket ( :rainbow->quanta of target element) would also help. Once quanta is out of the way, the duo strategies might need a little more encouraging to work together.

About  :water synergies:

Quote from: Zblader
"Holy Water" is a common concept that is believed to ward off evil spirits and kill vampires evil entities in general, as well as curing status effects.
That's why  :water and  :light should have a strong synergy. But it isn't so.
Need creature like a priest or spell like an holy water to make a combo with both.

Moreover, there are water creature influenced by light, which are important to balance ecosystem

 :water  :gravity:
It's weird that nobody notice it. Gravity has a very strong influence on water.
Moon's gravity influence oceans, seas and water animals. Sea fruits move theirself instinctively with lunar cycles. Should have a strong connection and synergy, but isn't so... why?

:water :darkness
Creatures of deep ocean live without light.
There are tons of legends about ghost ship, misterious creature, ghost, curses of the sea... these could be a good starting point to a synergy.

:water :time
Water in the past was used to measure the time, there was water hourglass too.
Flowing of sea's wave and time sounds well toegether. A drop of water with time can erode the rock.

:water :aether
mmmh... can be associated with alchemy I guess

my attempt at  :water :gravity synergy. While its seems good in theory. the most obvious thing mechanic wise would be for gravity to cause flooding. but flooding already exists as a water specific card. Im not sure where else this synergy could go other than to hybridize already existent features of gravity and water.

Lunar Pull (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,34840.0.html)

A "give buff to all water creatures" gravity card would not fit well in EtG i feel.

I feel that other water duos are equally cumbersome. Water can deform to fit any container. this leads to a lack of self identity where any duo using water resembles (thematically) the non water element more so than the water element.  :fire :water -> high damage growth.   :death :water -> poison buildup. Nymph tears -> other element specific ability.  :earth :water -> earthquake. Drop the water from those duos and they still make thematic sense. the water is unnecessary. Water needs central themes that other elements can bring out, rather than those elements being expressed in water.

Ps. when the heck did i become a senior member?

That's the same try I made before (High Tide), but I was too noob to build a good mechanic :D

However, your idea for Angler is very nice :D

I think what angler does, as appose to other water duos, is that it morphs :light into a water focused skill.

light becomes lure becomes way to kill creatures with flooding. something that is almost anti light (healing and life saving) in some respects. I think water needs more skills like that. Things that tie together other elements with the core aspects of water (Which in my opinion is freezing <-defense. and flash flooding/ drowning <-  offense). as oppose to taking things from other elements and sprinkling them in with a water card.
