-1 ability cost and +1 health. I'd say it's a bit UP in my opinion. But who knows.

So this is a more versatile version of a dark elite Otyugh?  In comparison to Oty, I'd say it's actually OP due to the fact it can pretty much devour anything, and it's pretty useful even not upgraded(it's on par with an upped card when it's unupped? I don't think elements works like that). Raise the cost of both cards to 6  :darkness IMO.

Actually, this could prove OP or UP depending if used in early or late game. That's its main balancing issue.

CURATOR COMMENT
-The COST in the table needs to reflect the card image (it should say '6 :darkness' instead of '5 :darkness')

I don't think the 'variable' ability cost will work - suppose you activate the Darkness' "Devour" ability (which has a resemblance to the 'Lost Soul | Soul Eater (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,5245.0.html)' card in the Crucible); when you go to devour a creature, does it only allow you to target creatures that you can afford to consume based on your :darkness quanta? If so, then Shard of Readiness basically makes this by far the best 'reuseable CC' card for that reason alone. No need to worry about high HP Voodoo Dolls or Dragons or other creatures with ridiculously higher HP - just select what you want, and devour it for free.

I would think that the mechanic in itself is too unstable to even try to implement - Scarabs and Otyugh's are one thing, but this card could probably break too many rules regarding creature durability and versatility in the meta-game, especially since Darkness has several other cards (Devourers specifically) that will make its 'X' costs almost nullified.

The art is beautiful nonetheless... ^^;

perhaps  somehow SoRs wouldnt work on it, i mean it could be used so that when you use it it takes the quanta even with SoR, to your other comments rewind can get rid of voodoo dolls with high hp so thats not too op, and dragons cost loads anyway, also most dragons arent too tough as it is, two shots from an eagle eye kills most of them (and who uses massive dragons?) furthermore i have found that devourers do not create mass amounts of dark, other elements can create much more quanta.

i do have an idea that might make it even less powerful, i could get rid of the health bonuses from devouring leaving it with only 5 health for the game making it an easy kill for loads of decks, please discuss this

5 would still be a bit tough. I say 3, if you want to give him that uberkill ability.

As Kuroaitou already said, i think that the variable ability cost doesn't work.
Think about the gameplay:
You click on your "Soul eater" to devour a creature. How many quanta you spend?
And THEN you click on a target.
In Elements, when you click on the creature to activate the ability, you spend quanta. Not after you selected the target.

Suggestion:
"1 :darkness  : Devour target creature (any hp) and gain +1/+1
Increase ability cost by 1 :darkness"

or

"1 :darkness  : Devour target creature (any hp) and gain +1/+1
Increase ability cost by 2 :darkness"

anything
