NOTES:
Fourth card in the Battlegrounds series.
  • Rancor: The monster gets +2|+2 when battling, before it takes and deals damage from each battle. This bonus lasts until the end of the turn. When it loses +2|+2 at the end of the turn, it loses only max HP. (i.e., it does not take damage from losing this bonus. This bonus can apply multiple times: for example if it is buffed or targeted with a damage spell, it keeps growing temporarily.)
  • Rampage: The monster will target the nearest enemy at the end of each turn instead of attacking. If there are no enemy creatures, it has a 50% chance to either battle a nearby ally or destroy a random permanent.

"Battle" is a position-based creature-to-creature combat mechanic that targets the "nearest" enemy creature starting from the opponent's top row. Two creatures target each other and damage each other based on their attack.

Spoiler for Battle Mechanics:
  • Battle: creatures pair off and deal damage to each other. In their normal attack order, each creature targets a single opponent for battle. Each creature deals damage based on its attack, and takes damage to its HP.
  • Targeting: Creatures battle the targetable enemy creature nearest to the top row in their column.
  • "Targetable" considers skills such as Immaterial and Burrow, but not Evasion.
  • Ties for "nearest" are resolved by reverse slot order: highest first.
  • "Top row in their column" refers to the one or two hexes at the top of the column that the creature occupies.

Spoiler for example images of target priority:
These are pictures of the game board. The bottom green slot is a creature initiating a battle on its turn. The upper slots show targeting priority: Lighter slots are chosen first, then darker slots if the lighter slots are empty.

    Targeting priority for slot 1:

    Targeting priority for slot 2:

    Targeting priority for slot 17:
  • The Airborne skill gives a creature a 25% chance to evade battle damage.
  • Creatures with status effects such as Delayed and Frozen remove a turn of status effect, but they do not actively battle or deal damage when targeted for battle.
See OdinVanguard's Field Based Combat Series for discussion of columns, "nearest" and other related and inspiring ideas.
See OdinVanguard's Contested Bridges for a slightly different mechanic of "battle."

Originally I was thinking they would both be passive, but I think being able to lobotomize Rancor would be fun and balancing.

Awesome! Aww, cute little monster. Yikes! Ow! OMG! AAAAAAIIIIIEEEEE!!!  :P

targeted by what? abilities?
awesome idea. if used with angels (targets card with healing) it could be devastating.
if targeted with momentum , does it ignore attacking creatures?

Targeted by anything that targets. Momentum allows creatures to ignore shields, but since Monsters never attack, that doesn't have any effect.

To take your example, suppose you had an Angel and a momentum:

You play a Monster, buff it with Momentum (+1|+1 and +2|+2 from Rancor), and then "heal" it with the Angel (no effect except getting +2|+2 from being targeted). It gains +1|+1 permanently, and +4|+4 from Rancor until the end of the turn for a total of 3|5 + 5|5 = 8|10.

At the end of the turn, it battles, lets say, a Black Dragon (10|5). They both target each other for battle. When it gets targeted, it gets another +2|+2 until the end of the turn from Rancor, for a total of 10|12. It kills the Black Dragon, takes 10 damage, and then loses the temporary +6|+6, dropping down to 4|2 (max HP 6).

If it lives until your next turn, you could heal it again with the Angel and get another +2|+2, which would put it at 4|6 +2|+2 (Rancor) = 6|8.

A like to talk about details, so... is there a particular point that you find confusing?

Intersting... The battle mechanic will appear chaotic at first, but does have a definite pattern to it. It would definitely be a tricky card to master...

You mention that it also battles "permanents" how would that work? Would it automatically destroy them or would stack size cost or some other attribute get factored in somehow?

@OdinVanguard:

When there are no enemies, the monster has a 50/50 chance to either battle one random ally or destroy one random permanent.

I ran out of space for another verb. Ideally the card would read, "battles allies or destroys a random permanent." Maybe I could change it to "targets a random ally or permanent" to be more clear.

@QueenBee:

If this helps, a simpler example would be a bunch of 5|3 frogs.

First turn: the Monster is 3|5 + 2|2 = 5|7, battles and kills a frog, finishes at 5|2 (takes five damage) and then returns to 3|2.
Second turn: the Monster is 3|2 + 2|2 = 5|4, battles, kills another frog, and also dies at 5|-1.

Is that more clear?

oh. yeah that's slightly clearer. well it'd be a strategic card for sure.
