Spoiler for The way of Scorpion:
:deathbig :lifebig The way of Scorpion :timebig :waterbig

Hi there. Thanks for reading. I am going to show you how to build a scorpion deck. This topic will be divided into 3 parts, one for each scorpion.

 :life Forest Scorpion :life

This is the Forest Scorpion, the easiest one to use, since it needs no buffs to poison the opponent, though a single 1 DR shield will nullify it (at least the unupped version). So which are the best card to use with this scorpion? It's clearly that it is too slow to kill the opponent alone.

This is one of the best cards to use with Forest Scorpion. By using adrenaline on this scorpion, it makes it attack 4 times, poisoning the opponent on the first and last attack. So the damage starts to increase quickly. 4 damage in the first turn, 6 damage in second, 8 damage in third and so on (considering the scorpion isn't killed). This strategy is mostly used in mono life rushesMitosis, another life card that can be used to get excellent results from your scorpions. With this, you can multiply them pretty fast and poison the opponent at an insane rate. Combining scorpion+mitosis with some empathic bonds can give you time to stall until the opponent is killed by poison, even if he played a shield in the meantime.
"What has this to do with scorpions?" you might ask. Well, this card can be used to stall until your scorpions kill the opponent in case you don't use mitosis. If you use mitosis, it's better to use empathic bond."lolwut?" Yep, this dragon can be used if you want to kil the opponent fast, or if you fear shields or CC so it doesn't nullify your damage, since life has no PC.
This card can help a LOT with the stalling. It's better than fire shield on average, since it has the potential to kill creatures a lot fasterOk, you can say I'm crazy, but this card can help you transform your scorpions into powerful creatures (especially if you use the upped version) when the opponent uses shields that nullify your scorpions, or it can be used as CC to slow down the opponent (unupped version). It is vulnerable to CC though.
This solves one of :life 's problems: the lack of PC. With this, you can turn your scorpions into pulverizers and crush opponent's shields, weapons or other annoying permanents.Helps you bypass shields and makes your scorpions even better with adrenaline.
Not very used, but it can make your scorpions less vulnerable to CC.This can help you stall while opponent is killed by your scorpions.
This creature can really help with the stalling, but it's quite vulnerable to CC as well. The good news is that the opponent usually kill the wardens first, then the scorpionsSame as Butterfly effect, solving the PC problem. Even though this is a one use card, it's not vulnerable to CC, it costs a lot less overall and it doesn't take away your scorpion's ability to poison.
Another cheap card that can make an opponent creature useless for 3 turns. Additionally, you can use some forest spirits as well, since you have water quanta now.Freeze on a stick, though it costs a lot more overall and is vulnerable to CC.
With this card you can protect your mitosis'd scorpion so you can make a lot without worrying that it might get killed (for 3 turns)If you don't like mitosis, you can try to use fractal, though it's a little too expensive. Still, this can give you a faster scorpion generation. Combined with empathic bond, you can have the ultimate stalling and offensive power. And if you fear DR shields, you can pack some emerald dragons as well to get through those shields. Additinally, you can pack lighting as well, since life has no direct CC.
This can help with the stalling and let your SoG's and/or bonds do their job while you are protected by it.

 :death Deathstalker :death

This is the death scorpion, known as deathstalker. It may seem quite useless, since it has 0 atk, but buff it and you'll have a surprise. You don't even need to stall as much as with the forest scorpion when using this one, since it's poison spreads a lot faster than forest scorpion's.

This card is on average as good as blessing, and cheaper. You can just splash it in your deck to buff the deathstalkers. DO NOT use the unupped version. This is for your own good.One of the best cards to buff your deathstalkers with, since you don't have to worry about shields anymore.
This is only good when you already buffed the deathstalker (preferably 1, 2 or 3 atk), this way you'll give your opponent 4 poison each turn (on first and last attack), plus the scorpion's damageSince you're already using :death , why not use this cheap creature that poisons the opponent even more? You can splash them in your deathstalker deck.
Not really the best card to use here, but it's still a viable strategy. You have access to the other light cards as well.Not really a good idea, since there are a lot better buffs for this scorpion, but it can be used if you want. WARNING: An immortal scorpion with spell damage will NOT poison the opponent anymore
Considering you already buffed the deathstalker, this card can make the poison spread even faster.You could say that this is a weapon version of the forest scorpion, again, good in making the poison spread faster.
I let the best to the end. This is the BEST card to use with deathstalker, since it doesn't buff only one of them, it buffs them all, and it buffs the rest of your :death or :darkness creatures as well, with only ONE card.This can be used along nightfall (since they are both :darkness ) to protect your deathstalkers as well. Consider it a 3 turn quint.
This is one of the best shields for stalling when using this scorpion, since you already have the death quantum anyway. Plus, you can pack some plagues as well or other CC to make this grow even stronger.This can help you get the time needed to spread your poison and kill your opponent.

 :time Dune Scorpion :time

This is a more stall-ish scorpion, since it takes some time to kill your opponent with it.

This card is on average as good as blessing, and cheaper. You can just splash it in your deck to buff the dune scorpions or use more entropy cards for stalling, like antimmater, or even dissipation shield, which can block all damage if you have enough quantum. Additionally, you could pack some discords as well to slow down your opponent. DO NOT use the unupped version. This is for your own good.This is the most used buff for dune scorpion, since it can be splashed pretty easy. Plus, you only need one hit from the scorpion for it to start killing your opponent slowly. Chaos power might be better, because gravity doesn't have much stalling, except for gravity shield, black hole or otyugh, but these are situational, so you need to use time as stalling.
This is used pretty often as well by those who want to use other light cards as well, like sanctuary.As I said before, this is used along blessing to provinde the stall needed for the opponent to die. You can combine this with sundial as well, so every time you are close to dying, just use sundials to let the sanctuary heal you, plus, you can draw a card as well, since you have light quantum.
A good combo with sanctuary and miracle, especially of you use the :light mark.Though rarely used, it can be used along sanctuary and SoD to stall even more.
Almost never used, because it doesn't give the scorpion a hp buff as well, but it's a viable strategy. It gives the most powerful atk buff (except for a lucky chaos power) and gives you access to other aether cards as well, like dimensional shield or lightning, which can be a huge addition to your stalling power. If you want to have some burst damage as well, you can pack a dragon or a ghost of the past and a fractal as well. WARNING: An immortal scorpion with spell damage will NOT poison the opponent anymore.One of the best stalling cards that can be used with the dune scorpion. It block 50% of the damage and, unlike dusk, there is no risk.
Stops all the damage, except weapon and poison, which is clearly to your advantage, and it let's you draw a card as well.This is the one of the best cards to use along with a buffed dune scorpion. Making your opponent play the card again and increasing their poison again.
This is the BEST card to use along a buffed dune scorpion. RT on a stick, what could be better than that? The poison will spread a lot faster.Usually sundial is used more often than dim shield with dune scorpion, but this gives you 3 turns of protection instead of one, plus, it doesn't block your creatures from attacking as well. When you use light/time it's recommended to use sundial, but when you use SoW, this is definately the best choice. You can even use them both if you want, but I don't think you'll need more than 18 turns to kill the opponent.

 :water Puffer fish :water

You might say that this isn't a scorpion, but it actually is. You can consider it a bigger forest scorpion if you want.

This is the BEST card you could use puffer fish with. 3 and 8 are the best attack values for adrenaline. This will transform your 3 atk creature into a 12 atk creature that will poison twice. On the first and on the last attack.It is a little expensive, but with mitosis you can spawn a lot of those puffer fishes resulting in a lot of poison that is very hard to block.
Not much to say. This can give you a 4 atk unstoppable poisoning scorpion. Plus, it makes it immune to lightning and rage potion.This can make your puffer fishes break through diamond shield and even resist pretty much any CC. It can give you acces to the other light cards as well
This gives you another way of poisoning your opponent. More poison is always better, right? Plus, you can now pack arsenic and poison as well.This is especially good if you use some life pillars/pends. You can get infinite adrenaline.
This permanent, which is rarely used, can block your opponent from playing more than 5 creatures (unless he has water creatures as well), which can help you stall a bit while your puffer fishes poison your opponent to death. You can combo this with mitosis as well, since the fishes won't die from flooding, they will enjoy itThis can be used to grow your fishes while your opponent uses SoSac, phase shield, sundial or titanium shield. When you combo this with flooding, your fishes will grow at an insane rate, turning into poisoning arctic dragons in 2 turns.

Spoiler for code:
War is the largest PvP event that is hosted by the elements official forum. It happens from once to twice every year since 2010 and is currently on its eighth edition. It is very distinct from other PvP events because of its sheer size (some editions had more than 100 participants) and lenght (it usualy last 2 or 3 months). Keeping this many people active during such a long time is as challenging to the team leaders as are the unique metagame and strategies of this event.

==   Basic structure ==

Throughout its 8 editions, there have been many changes to the rules of the event, but even so, some unique features have been present in most, if not all, wars

=== Teams related to elements ===
Every team (with the exception of Team Underworld, that wasn't a part of all wars) represents one of the 12 elements. This elemental afilliation is important as the team is led by the master of that element, or by someone appointed by the master (and as such, War has a strong connection with Trials, the event where the masters are chosen), and because the element defines the cards available for deckbuilding, as well as the deckbuilding rules for that team.

=== Team roles ===
In every war, the members of each team have had specific roles (from the minimalistic system of War 1, to the complex systems of Wars 2 and 3). The roles and what they mean have changed from war to war, but the two most important roles (since their introduction in War 2) are General and Lieutenant. The General is the leader of the team and must be either the current master of the corresponding element, or someone appointed by the master. The General is also responsible with building the team throught the auction system. The Lieutenant is the second-in-command and takes the lead in the absence of the General. However, on the more recent wars the main difference between the roles is only the number of upgraded cards allowed for the decks used.

=== Teams chosen by the generals (auction and draft) ===
The auction system was introduced in War 2 for the generals to build their teams. The players that want to participate in War submit applications, containing stats, like score, electrum and card counts, as well as their prefered elements and roles, as well as what elements they refuse to work with (generals from these elements cannot bid on the player). The generals then bid on players, competing against each other for the best ones. The currency they use on the bids are cards, meaning that if a general spends a certain amount of cards to get a player, that amount is deducted when they choose, at the beggining of War, the cards that will be available for building the decks. So while choosing their players, generals normally balance veterans (that tend to be more expensive to get) and newer players (that can be obtained by 1 or 2 cards). Since War 3, there is a limit on how many players a general can bid on and how many cards can be bid on a single player.

In War 8 an experimental draft system was used instead. Each general sent a list with 12 names in order of preference, together with a bid. The players are then assigned to teams according to the order of preference established and with generals that bid more having their lists used first. This change was made to speed up the process of choosing the teams and to spread the best players more evenly.

=== The vault ===
Once the team is chosen they must choose their vault. The vault is the list of cards (and their quantities) that the team intends to use during the event. The size of the starting vault depends on how many cards were spent during auction/draft and, during the whole event, the size of the vault acts like the amount of hit points of the team. The more cards a team has in the vault, the better its standings are and the more decks they must field in the battles (up to the number of players in the team or the number of opponents left). As a team loses cards, some of its players will need to be left outside of the main battles, until they don't have enough cards to field a deck (less than 30 cards in the vault) and the team is defeated. The rules for building the starting vault allow for a greater amount of cards matching the team element, while restricting the amount of cards from the other elements. This reflects the deckbuilding rules that also require a larger amount of cards of the team element in the decks used. There is no distinction between unupgraded and upgraded cards in the Vault and any card in the Vault can be used as either unupgraded or upgraded.

=== Propaganda ===
This is where the promoting of elements and War trash talk happens. It has not been an official part of all Wars, but it has always been present since War 1. In some of the Wars, teams were asked to make a War banner, choosing a War song and generals made War speeches. Completing these tasks with a reasonable amount of quality would be worth extra cards in the starting vault and the best banners and speeches were awarded even more cards.

=== Salvage and discard ===
Salvage and Discard are the main way vault sizes are changed (besides penalties, that are always paid in vault cards). When a player loses a battle they must discard a certain amount of cards from the deck they used, which are removed from the team's vault, while the winner gets to choose some of the cards from the loser's deck to add to their team's vault (the cards the losing team keeps don't have a relation with the ones the winning team salvages). The fact that the loser discards much more cards than the winner salvages is the main thing that controls the lenght of war, as every round the amount of cards in the vaults as a whole diminishes.

=== The secret section ===
The players of each team have a secret section, where they can discuss their strategies, track down the vaults of their opponents, as well as keeping their own vault. Keeping the vault correctly up-to-date is a great responsability, as minor mistakes can lead to penalties that can jeopardize the whole team.

=== Basic deckbuilding ===
All decks must contain at least half of the cards from the team element (pillars, pendulumns and marks count towards this total). Deck modifications and mark changes are not generally allowed. Rares, except shards, are allowed in the main battles and the amount of upgrades that can be used depends on the role of the player in the team (with the General always getting the greatest amount of upgrades).  Some details of the deckbuilding may also depend on team roles (for example, the Strategists in War 6 could change their mark, as well as use a sideboard)

=== Event cards ===
Event cards were introduced in War 2 and are basically special rules that are in effect only for one round. Event cards are created before the event starts, are picked up by the organizers and revealed only on the round they'll be used.

=== Conversions and trasmutations ===
The conversion rule was introduced in War 2 and has since become a central part of the strategy of War. It allows teams to convert any card in their vault with a pillar or pendulum of the team element. It was introduced so that teams would not be so often forced to field suicides (decks meant for losing) or illegal decks because of a bad previous round. The conversion is permanent though and so must be used wisely. Starting with War 8, there is no limit for the amount of conversions that can be made in a given round.

Transmutations are a related concept that were introduced in a partial way in War 7 and allow teams to convert the cards salvaged in battles into in-element cards (the ratio normally used is 2 salvaged cards per each in-element one). Since War 8 they can be done without restrictions.

== Strategies ==

=== The Auction ===

The strategy during auction revolves around getting a team that the General thinks that has a good chance at War, while keeping the amount of cards spent as low as possible. These are some of the strategies that are used for this end:

*1 card bids can be used as insurance in case some of the players the general wanted in his team become more expensive than he is willing to pay for them. However the General must also weight in if it the extra cards in the starting Vault are worth getting a potentialy more inexperient player in the team.

*It is possible to use carefuly placed bids to make your opponent's team more expensive, or to effectively "lock" a player in a team. A way of doing this is placing bids that don't affect your current team. Such bids are possible because only the highest winning bids a general makes contribute to his team formation. For example, a general whose bids contributing to the team are all above 6 cards, can make 5 card bids on other players, without affecting his team. This prevents other generals from bidding in those players for less than 6 cards, which might be seen as too expensive for that player. So if another general had made a previous 1 card bid, then the player gets effectively locked in that team. Even if 6 cards is a reasonable price for the player (which prevents the lock), it means that other generals can't attempt to get a better deal. (this is one of the reasons there is a maximum amount of players a general can bid on)

*Competition for the best players often escalates to maximum bids (where the choice is left to the player). These players are in most cases well worth the bids, but this competition is also a way to ensure that even if you don't get the player, your opponents won't get him cheaply.

*If the general decides to take a newbie into the team, it is interesting to teach them the basics quickly and to give precise instructions on the first rounds.

==== Draft specific strategies ====

In the draft system, some peculiarities can be exploited by the generals to get a good team for a reasonable price

*The most common strategy is bidding high in the first and second rounds and then trying to get what is left for low prices. Some examples are :darkness, :death and :fire in War 8.
*Prices are much higher in the first rounds of the draft, but good players last until the middle ones (and some may slip until the last ones). On the other hand, generals will try to compensate high bids with lower bids in the later rounds. Because of this making average bids will allow you to get some of the top12 players and give you a higher control in the middle rounds. An example is the strategy followed by :water and :air in War 8.
*As you are guaranteed to get one of the names in the list you send, you can get one of the top 12 players, one of the top 24 and so on, only making the minimum 1 card bid. This was the strategy followed by :time in War 8.

=== The Vault ===

Building the vault is critical for a team's success. So some of the particularities of War must be kept in mind.

*The conversion rule only allows for a limited number of cards to be changed into pillars every round. As such, the vault should have enough pillars and pendulumns, such that even in the case of a very bad round, viable decks can still be built in the following round, without the need for suicides.

*The War metagame has some staples and a team should build its vault expecting to face these decks. Some examples of decks that are extremely common are:
**Grabbows
**Psiontal
**Ghostmare
**RoL/Hope
**Dischole
**Bonebolt
**Light Stall
**Fractix
**Devtal

*Vault matchups play a big role. When building a vault, ways to counter specific elements (the most common strategies) should be taken into account. Situations where one deck can defeat a whole vault should not happen until the later parts of War (that is, such situations should be a consequence of the discards the team had to make, not a consequence of bad planning)

During the course of War, teams attempt to keep a healthy balance between card diversity and in-element cards. Card diversity is necessary to adapt to different situations, but if a team loses some of their key cards, it becomes much more difficult to build effective decks while still following the deckbuilding rules. One trick that can be used to hold to key cards in case a deck that makes heavy use of them loses is to make the deck a bit fatter, allowing the team a better choice of what cards to keep from the losing deck.

=== Deckbuilding and Mindgating ===

The skill to read your opponents is one of the most valuable ones in War. As decks can't be changed during the matches in a battle, the result is often decided by the deck matchup or by pure luck. For this reason it is very important for teams to keep a picture as acurate as possible of their opponent's vaults. This is specially important against teams close to be eliminated, as their limited vault imposes more restrictions in their deckbuilding and makes countering them easier.

For the same reason it is very important not to be predictable, when building a deck for a War match. Chances are that an unusual deck will fare better than a more effective deck, simply because the opponent doesn't expect it.

Sometimes when building decks, suicide decks are inevitable, the main rationale is that concentrating their best cards in decks that are very likely to win, while leaving decks with very little chances to win causes an impact in the vault at first, but will allow the team to keep themselves in a more stable situation in the following rounds, as they will need to field less decks. A more high risk/high return strategy that can be used depending on the matchups is to spread the forces, that is, fielding stronger decks against stronger opponents and weaker decks against weaker opponents. This requires a good knowledge of the opponent's vaults to work though.

=== Avoiding Penalties ===

Some pointers are followed by most teams to keep penalties at a minimum:

*Check if everything is correct, then check again. This applies to decks, vault, salvages and discards.
*Do not, in any circumstances, edit things after the deadline. Even accidental things can cause an "edit fingerprint", so the corresponding thread should be locked, just to be safe.
*Make sure everyone in your team knows the rules

=== Activity ===

Activity is crucial for a War team to work well. This is something that generals need to take into account since the auction, because a good player that never shows up can be less useful than a highly motivated, but less experient player. Since auction, a general should make sure that the players he intends to bid on understand the amount of work involved in War (specially the less experient ones) and have the free time to be active members of a team.

Even so, given the lenght of War, it is best to be realistic and prepare the team for the case one or two of the players have to be absent for long times. It is generally a good idea not to keep the work loads concentrated in a few players for a long time. This can make them stressed out and can be catastrophical in case they need to be absent. Doing this requires the existence of good communication, coordination and organization among team members.

Because of this, morale and staying motivated are also very important, even if things start to fall apart.

* During War 3 the teams didn't use a consistent naming for the team roles. General, Lieutenant and Strategist were used by all teams. The other roles were: Vault Organizer, Jester, Duel Organizer, Salvager, Deckbuilder, Private, Dogsbody, The Replacement, The Other Replacement, Absent and Sidekick.
* Since War 5, roles can be changed every round
** In War 5 the roles were General, Lieutenant, Strategist, Scout, Salvager, Assassin and Support
** In War 6 the roles were General, Lieutenant, Strategist, Berserker, Quarter Master, Standard Bearer and Support
** Since War 7, the only roles are General, Lieutenant and Soldier

The Way of Scorpions: I like the idea, same as I did with Fractal, taken from the FFQ one before. In my opinion you have some cards that have nothing to do with them, like fallen elf (what?), cloak, deflag, NT and Wardens. I would probably vote for it if it was written in the Wiki. Yes, the COs said you could do it in forum code, but it's still not the point of the competition in my opinion.
Copypasted an idea of some months ago. Another reason not to vote for it,

War: It's very well Written and goes further than simply the Rules, but the update you made wasn't so significant. You added a section about the teams chosen by the generals, updated the results of the previous war and the draft of this War, the rest is mainly the same as far as I saw.

Devtal: You could have included some variations with Drain Life, Lighting and talk about the quanta builds, but it has more than the basics and it's easy to read. It gets my vote.

COs: I said I would submit something and in the end I didn't find a topic to write about, sorry for that.

This should most likely be a reply to the actual topic rather than here. I already pointed out the utility of each of these cards in the topic.

Ummm, this links you back to this topic...

Also, I don't really get what's wrong with me submitting one of my older works. It's better like that because I had time to get feedback on it.

I didn't post it on the Wiki because I have no idea how to do that...

I fixed the link.
It's a competition, you are supposed to make an effort to win this specific competition, not saying "Yeah, I wrote an article before, I will just copypaste it to the wiki competition (I already said what I think about being it in forum code)

You can perfectly not know how to write in wiki code, you can just see the guides in the wiki like I did for the old wiki competition OR just see how other wiki articles are written in their edit pages and take your own conclusions.

It's not that I can't learn to write in the wiki code. It's that I don't know how to start a new topic there in the first place.

Anyway, I figured that if people want that on the wiki, they will vote for it. If people don't want it on the wiki, there's really no reason to post it there. That's how I think it should work, at least.

With "another reason not to vote for it" you pretty much dragged it down forever with no chance of winning at all now. Don't worry, I won't hold any grudge against you because of it, but it really made me sad. Expressing your opinion is something, trying to convince people not to vote on it is something else. "I don't like it because..." is very different from "Nobody should like it because...".

Of course I'm speaking about what I think, I can't talk in the name of anybody. And I think you have been lazy for not doing it in the wiki and specially for copypasting an old article instead of writing a new one.

I think the War article that andretimpa submitted is very thorough and at the same time not overdetailed, but I wasn't impressed by its presentation. It's a massive wall of text! Second place, bro.

UTAlan's Devtal writeup is helpful, short, and very readable, on the other hand. I wish there was a bit more breakdown of the individual cards and their uses, but otherwise it's completely filled and a good resource to deckbuilders of all expertises.

The Way of Scorpions by iancudorinmarian has the best of both of these. It's very well put and while sometimes redundant, containing unnecessary or repeated cards, the descriptions are straightforward and helpful. This one gets my vote.

The worst article wins? An article about devtal which couldn't be shorter? And with a very good War article and an awesome suggestion of various Scorpion-based strategies? Is this for real voters?
