this competition would be more interesting if the trial reward wasn't limited to being a 'counter 1 specific card' bonus, as is it may as well be an immaterial permanent with an activated ability competition, essentially.

a Mark with an activated ability is essentially a immaterial permanent, as it can not a target of pc. and then on top of essentially being immaterial, it also comes out as soon as three game starts.

To be fair, the Trials is still in the development phase which means it's possible to shift Zanz's opnion on the subject, especially when he's implementing a new patch. If people really like the idea of the Competition and want to see it ingame, users can take it one step further and make a Game Suggestions Thread about it or post in the 1.31 patch thread.

I am struggling to find a way to balance such a mark relative to existing marks. However I have no good ideas to solve this balance puzzle.

i agree, my only suggestion would be for the benefits to be rather weak, given their 0 cost to put into play, immediacy of play, and immaterial equivalence.  unless there are several means of mark control/denial such as gust|gale http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,37383.0.html implemented alongside the addition of powerful marks, or it is decreed that the power of marks are intended to dramatically change the way the game is played.
