NOTES:
Since I use several new terms, I figure I should give a little more background on what they mean. Most should be very intuitive, but just in case:

Facedown means that this card appears facedown to the opponent (e.g. they see only the "back of the card" image as if it were in your hand). Facedown cards may still be targeted like a standard permanent.

Trap: means that this permanent is a special type that will only trigger in response to a particular event or action taken by the opponent, in this case it triggers when the opponent attempts to manipulate your quanta. If there are multiple traps in play that respond to the same event, only 1 trap gets triggered per event unless otherwise noted.

Once a trap triggers, it leaves play unless otherwise stated.

Quantum Trigger: This trap card is triggered whenever an opponent's spell or effect would absorb or scramble your quanta.

Triggering effects will only respond to enemy spells and effects. If one of the owner's cards generates one of the triggering effects, it will not trigger the trap.
E.g. dissipation shield will trigger this card's effect because it is not owned by the opposing player.

Counter: means that the effect that triggers this card is prevented. E.g. if this card were to trigger when the enemy cast a black hole, the opponent would not gain any health, nor would they absorb any of your quanta. (and they would take the 10 or 15 damage from the trap)

The intent of this card should be fairly straightforward. It is a soft counter to various denial strategies. Most specifically scramble / blackhole combo's. It also helps versus devourers, although it will be less effective there as each bomb would only stop a single devourer.

It seems odd that a counter to Discord would show up in entropy...(your unupped card is not showing.)

I like the idea, would this blow up a devourer, or just hurt the opponent?

Is this a good thing or bad thing? ... Traps seem very well suited here since there is no way for a player to respond to an opponent's actions until next turn.

Right now, there is very little reason not to just "spam" cards as you get them, and this gives a strong advantage to "Blitz" like combos. I.e. combos that can be carried out in a single turn are at a rather strong advantage over those that take multiple turns to set up since the player will not have any chance to respond.

In MtG, this was dealt with using "counterspell" like effects... this is not feasible in Elements, however, since it requires a player to act when it is not their turn.

Traps give a means of implementing such "counterspell" like effects while still staying within the "play by mail" messaging setup of the elements engine. They will force players to think more carefully before spamming spells and effects.


Not every trap needs to include "counter" effect X ... I put that in on this card in particular because otherwise it would be very ineffective against blackhole. Right now I'm leaning toward unupped versions of traps acting as strong "reaction" effects but still allowing the trigger effect to occur, where as the upped versions will provide a weaker reaction but will counter the triggering effect.

E.g. For this card, the unupped version just zapps the opponent but the owner's quanta still gets absorbed or scrambled. The upped version prevents the absorption or scramble, but deals a good deal less damage
-I.e. the unupped could kill a 100 hp player if 5 or more are triggered (120 damage for 6). The upped will not (max of 90 damage for 6) but will be much more useful against black hole.

Good point.

It would not. This is because the absorption is coming from a card the player owns. Traps will only respond to hostile spells and effects. This is to prevent abuses such as this.

I don't like the face-down mechanic for three reasons.
1st) Face down is not supported in ETG.
2nd) The card is going to appear before played to your opponent, so he/she knows what kind of card it is.
3rd) Since it is going to be the ONLY face-down card in the whole ETG, that face-down card on your opponent's side of field is crying out it is a Feedback Trap/Bomb.

None of this is carved in stone, is it? And 3) would be easily changable anyway.

I like the idea basically. EtG does lack certain counterspells, and, as Odin perfectly explained already, MtG-like counterspells can't be implemented.
I also like the specific card.
