Forum Brawl #7 - Round 1 - Voting https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=65831.msg1275362#msg1275362

Time until voting for Round 1 ends:
Time's up!

How to vote
All you have to do to vote in Brawl #7 is to follow these 3 steps!
Note that unlike the previous Brawl, Brawl participants are allowed to vote.

1. Read
Read through all the submissions below to see what you actually want to vote for. Be sure to not accidentally miss one!

2. Decide
After reading, decide how you want to vote. Remember, you have 10 voting points ('voints') to split up between teams for each task. If you really like two of them but not the others, you could vote 5-5-0-0. Or if you have a clear ranking in mind, you could vote 4-3-2-1. Or split it up in any other way you want. The only limits is that you cannot give more than 5 voints to any one team, and you have to spend all 10 voints on each task you vote on. Any votes that do not fulfill these conditions will not be counted.

3. Vote
Go vote here! (Voting tool made by UTAlan)

4. Write (optional unless Voting Panel)
Write a post in this topic where you tell the rest of the community why you liked who you liked (Or why you didn't like who you didn't like). You have to give at least some reasoning for your vote on whatever team you gave the most voints, but feel free to give some feedback to all teams if you want! Be sure to not reveal your exact votes to anyone, to help avoid strategic voting. You are supposed to tell who you liked and why, but not how you spent your voints. This will however be revealed at the end of the voting, together with the totals to see who actually won!
This step is required if you are part of the Voting Panel!

If you have any questions about the voting procedure, don't hesitate to ask!

Feel free to scroll down to see the submissions for this round...

Spoiler for Iron Manta:
Interstellar Correspondence Transmitter: The Iron Manta Approved by The Deep Council of Blistermarsh
Recipient: Marsh-Maid Gilly CrazyJ
Content: My Darling Silly Gilly,

I know I said I wouldn't write until we landed so I could set up a stationary signal port, and my message wouldn't have to be relaid by the council, but after a month away from you, I couldn't stop myself from telling you about this amazing corner of the universe.
We are closing our orbit of the planet we believe the sound is coming from. It doesn't look like much itself, a cold husk really. Very dry. I'm dreading disembarking quite honestly, I wish you were here to keep me wet and warm.

Honestly though, my dearest Gilly-Giggle, the real reason I write to you sooner than expected are the stars. Let me describe them to you so you may see them through my eyes.

Now these aren't your average Blistermarsh 9. Our 9 stars are gigantic in comparison, honestly you'd be amazed these things even have a gravitational field strong enough to anchor a planet in orbit.

What they lack in size though, they make up for in style. Remind you of anyone? They are so incredibly bright, and are the only two stars for millions of lightyears. Picture the deepest ocean on Blistermarsh... you know those angler fish? Your eyes get so used to the dark that their little glowing danglers burn into your retinas. The light isn't static either, it fluctuates and flickers, gigantic swirling fiery blue tendrils snake their way around the little starlets, like a photon octopus. Oh that's right, I skated past the best part... THEY'RE BLUE! I didn't think I could ever feel at home on a water-less planet, but the whole planet and our entire craft is bathed in a magnificent ocean blue. It is intoxicating.

Then there is the orbit of the planet. Such a thing has only ever been theorised, but it appears the two stars are almost equal in mass, and are slowly orbiting eachother from afar, while the planet's trajectory is an almost perfect figure of eight around the two blue beauties. It puts me in mind of you rolling a shell between two of your beautiful webbed fingers... your dexterity is something I am always... always grateful for.

I have attached a rough diagram of the system, if only to sharpen the image in your mind. Forgive me, I was never the artistic type.. more of a do-er.

Oh my glorious Gillygasm. How I miss you and your touch so. It is strange, I feel a certain affinity with this planet at the moment, because it has two blue balls.

Soon after we arrived, we realized why this was a barren planet. There is a Pulverizer that destroys everything on the planet, making it very difficult for any living thing to survive, not to mention the quakes and the gas. Hell, it even destroyed part of our engine, which makes me wonder if we'll ever find our way back. Let's hope our mechanic can fix the problem, meanwhile we'll try to salvage some titanium from the ground.

Spoiler for Battlestar Go Frak Yourself:

DEATH FROM THE NIGHT SKY

Every summer, when the twin blue dwarf-stars were in alignment, the inhabitants of Planet X would sit outside and watch the annual meteor shower. Year after year, the normally dark atmosphere would brighten up with thousands of white lights streaking across the sky.

One year, the meteors came early. The inhabitants didn't know what was happening until it was too late.....

An alien race, led by their queen the Death Nymph, had been sending rocks to the planet in an attempt to break through the atmospheric barrier that was protecting the planet. During the alignment of the twin dwarf stars, their gravitation pull was weak enough on one side of the planet to send the meteors. This year, however, was a double alignment and provided the aliens ample opportunity to send several more days worth of meteors.

By the third day of the meteor shower, the atmosphere buckled, cracked, then shattered. To the ground fell thousands of meteorites, slamming into the ground on the far side of the planet. The inhabitants were safe from the shockwaves of the blasts, but little did they know that the meteorites carried an invasion force. Each meteorite contained several viruses that carried through the air and infected the inhabitants. Driven to madness, the inhabitants destroyed their homes; when everything they owned was gone, they turned on each other, and finally on themselves.

The once beautiful planet was left barren and destroyed. Not a remnant of the blossoming civilization remained. The alien race, having finally destroyed this planet, set their sights on other planets and other solar systems to leave in ruin.

How the deck works:

This is for the most part a stall deck. The Retroviruses and Aflatoxins work together to create Malignant Cells.

On your opponent's side, you can kill multiple Malignant Cells to build up a large Bone Wall. The Meteorites can be used to blast spaces on your opponent's side of the field, killing 3 Malignant Cells in one shot and leaving 3 Unoccupiable Craters. With all 3 of these, you can nullify 9 of your opponent's creature slots. The Collision Course card can be used to take out multiple threats your opponent has on the field and allow more space for the Malignant Cells to infect.

On your side, when you've built up enough creatures, you can drop an Asteroid (or 2) and hit for 20+ damage each. If the board fills up, you can use the Catapult to clear a spot for another Asteroid. This will also add to your Bone Wall stacks. The Chimera can be used for a nice finisher.

Black Box File: Engineer Brightdamp's log - Transmission 0106, SBmD 450
Description: Discovery
Content: After 75 Standardised Blistermash Days in the Blightmurk, it's great that we're finally out. While I'm not scared by a few rogues, this is not a fighter vessel - the Captain's quick temper would make my team overworked with repairs. I suppose I'll take him whoring out over the comms instead.

The signal this crew has been sent to investigate is coming from this sector, which is uncharted by anyone worth my time. The crew noticed three other ships, all three humans - One part of the official federation, and one belonging to those damned priests. They were butting their heads at each other, as usual, always caring about their own ego than their jobs, while the quiet third one, walking alone, stayed well clear of us and them. That one's going to be a pain in the siphon.

Other than the signal, the only other object of note in the sector are the two blue dwarves. Beautiful little sods that should've incinerated any precious water, life, or technology on this planet a very long time ago - Thanks to those stars, the heat from entry is going to require repair upon completion. The Multiterrain Exploration Buggy is being submerged as I speak so that exploration can continue while the ship is on downtime.

I hope for cordial relations between all four parties, but if any ship has the audacity to attack us while we're rushing for our descent, I will be quite irritated at my lost leisure time.

Attached to this recording are basic scans of the sector on the minor chance that we need backup or worse.

Signing off -
Brightdamp

Ah, the magnificence! | BASIC TASK
Write a poem describing how magnificent a barren planet orbiting a pair of blue dwarf-stars can be.

Spoiler for Green Night:
Oh! How the stars are staring
By the window's a planet long lost
Oh! How the stars are staring
What is happening here
in this place so lonely, lonely

All the ponds are lying frozen
Where is my life? The sky is black
And all our hopes are lying frozen
Those stars and planet take me aback
Will we ever find our way back

Don't cry, child
heaven's got a plan for you
Don't you cry, child
There may be no birds, no roses
But don't lose hope, don't cry

Oh! How the stars are staring
By the window's a planet long lost
Oh! How the stars are staring
What is happening here
And the Green Night feels so lonely, lonely.
Spoiler for Battlestar Go Frak Yourself:
Alone

Our new home with great rocky pores,
A small gray planet so far from yours.
No oceans, no creatures, no tree to see,
Just the rock, the blue glow, the air, and me.

On all the space that the blue stars glow,
No other living souls to be found.
As we stand here on the plain gray ground,
This is how it feels to be truly alone.

We as a team must try to survive,
This planet has nothing to keep us alive,
We use our great spaceship to hide inside,
From the crippling loneliness found outside.

Perhaps if you liked this sort of feeling,
Magnificent is the word you'd use,
But all that word really does is confuse,
As this plain, barren rock sends my mind reeling.
Spoiler for Paratus:
Wake up elementals, I've got some big news!
You won't want to miss this. You don't want to snooze;
We just found a planet while we were stargazing,
Gather 'round, listen up. This one’s amazing!

Barren the planet of demise,
When first she gleam'd upon my sight;
A columbary vision dreamt,
To be a moment's toxicant;
Aside blue stars of twilight fair,
Like twilight's, too, her dusky air;
Of all things held about her drawn,
From space-time probes steered along;
Yet gave no lakes, the image gray,
While caves showcased timid water’s bays.

I saw there upon clearer view,
Two dwarf stars, blue ones woo!
Observe this world of glory,
A magnificence worth a story;
Of galaxies and matter, dark,
Travel this conscious life spark.

Yet there may be more to see,
Depictions of love, war, and killing sprees;
Caverns casting tall tales,
Of magical wonder they hail;
A planet breathing hostile breath,
Its dwarf stars between life and death;
And now magnificence is gleamed,
In this age-old fanciful fiend!
Spoiler for Iron Manta:
I have nothing, need I more?

Spoiler for Hidden:
This poem is an intentional allegory. It is about our 'barren' planet between two blue dwarf stars, but has another meaning, closer to home, but not quite.

I sit alone
and marvel at my place in all of this
So strange to think of all the chaos felt by more 'interesting' things
That I could relatively feel such bliss.

I have nothing.
But 'nothing' never hurts me, never fractures, never bleeds
The stillness left by absence makes even 'nothing' seem complete
The bloom of peace is never plucked when strangled by the war of weeds.

Always seen, never noticed.
With nothing, what have I to hide?
No day. No Night. No reason to avoid the light.
Why care that no one looks at me before the brighter ones at either side?

To me, they are small.
At least smaller than they could be.
They pass by crackling with energy, but they seem blue.
While I am content, they never truly are, from what I see.

Brawl #7

The space theme of the brawl request comes from the name of the card, martian being an otherworldly planetary being. Martians may not be speed related, but we choose to utilize the card's gameplay mechanics to relate to speed. This card can help speedup game play or slow it down depending on what type of versatility you may need.

Use it on an opposing creature to remove their damage or to force them  into a RT style opportunity. You can also use it to buff your own creatures to hit that adrenaline sweet spot for maximum damage. A very powerful and versatile card that can help you to force a trade from your opponent at the right time.

This card would combo well with cards like Dune Scorpion, Thorn Carapace, and Deja Vu. Using the abilities on Dune Scorpian and Deja Vu would help create a boost to your offensive play. Small negative drawback of having to play the targeted creature a second time, but with the large reward of neotoxin or an adrenaline buffed Deja Vu ready to split in two. Defensively this could be paired with Thorn Carapace to either force them to play a creature with extra attacks into the poisonous shield, or hold their creatures back from not being played.

Lore

Speed and Time are linked. Theoretically, as you approach light speed, time actually slows down, allowing you to see into the past, and change your decisions for the future. As you draw cards, the future becomes apparent, but you have already seen them, because you are going so fast... but careful not to go too fast, or the fabric of reality could crumble...

Design
  • ""Drawn"" only refers to cards arriving into a hand from a deck. Mindgate, Nightmare, SoSe do not affect this ability.
  • Lobotomizes.
  • Attack going up to denote speed has precedence in acceleration.
  • Balance wise, I consider accelerate under powered, hence cheaper cost for comparable ability.
  • ""Turn"" means a single player's turn. If no extra draw-power is used, this will grant +2/+0 per game turn, +1/+0 per player's turn. If each player uses 1 hourglass, it will be +4/+0 by your next turn, as on each player's turn it only gave +2/+0. If you use SoBra, so 7 total cards are drawn on your turn (3 opponent, 4 you), then on your turn the creature will gain +7/-4, and then +1/+0 on your opponent's turn.
Usage
  • Use on opponent's creature with SoSac to force their damage to ramp up.
  • Use with sturdy creatures and SoBra for fast damage ramping, and in the same deck use on a threatening opponent's creature for potential CC.
  • Voodoo+Sobra+Rage Pot.

You, probably: What's Rainbow Bridge?

Us: Essentially, Rainbow Bridge is supposed to be incredibly powerful technology, which, when used in context of transportation, offers to cut thousands of lightyears down to days. One problem is that it emits large quantities of radiation throughout the way of the engine. We've left some hints about it in here, but, yeah, generally speaking, RB is just a very unstable power source that, although can do wonders when compared to normal modern fuels, also is very deadly to users and to people who come in contact with the trail, hence the reason it's not a very wide-spread techonology.

You, probably: What's up with the name.

Us: It's a reference to Norse mythologies that tell about a magical bridge that connected the worlds and was used to travel from one to another. Our rainbow bridge is in fact rainbow when seen from afar, but rainbow in this case is comprised from glowing radiating particles that, again, are very deadly.

You, probably: It's 0:20 am, go sleep.

I may be just a Brawler, so my votes don't really count for anything, but I'll be damned if I'm not going to post them

As I can't give any voints to my own team, GFY will not be mentioned in the below spoilers.

All criticism is directed at the submissions. No criticism is directed at those who made them.

I will assign points once the voting tool is fixed.

Spoiler for Captain:
Green Night: There are a couple of major issues with this piece. The first is the background stars - they a little too large, frequent, and regularly-spaced. While I can accept the colouring, I'd rather see countless tiny, barely-perceptible dots arranged into vague constellations. The twin dwarfs themselves seem a little odd - instinctively they feel like they're far too close to each other not be absorbed into one big star. They're also not quite circular, which would be fine if their shape represented the forces of gravity acting on them, but they just feel irregular. I'm not sure why they have a spiky border. Overall this feels like a rush piece. 2

Paratus: First off, Paratus loses points for the complaint in the submission. It's really not that hard to keep your OP clean. That being said, the pixelly style works perfectly for this submission. The stars are clear and contrasted and really look quite beautiful. The background of space is nice touch. The only thing letting these stars down is that they look like Blue Jupiters.
As per the previous Brawl, eventually I'd like to see some non-pixellated submissions, but for Round 1 this is not a problem at all. 5

Iron Manta: I can always appreciate a submission drawn outside of a computer. I find myself irritated by the fact that the sketch of the orbit itself runs off the page! There's also a bit of a continuity error - if the stars are 35km in diameter, that seems incredibly small for even a blue dwarf. I will admit, though, that the lore made me laugh.
For future reference: there's a great app called Office Lens which is available on Android and Windows Phone, at least, and probably iOS too that pretty much lets you use your phone like a scanner. 3

Spoiler for Space Trooper:
I don't have much choice for voting. 5 to Green Night and Iron Manta.

Spoiler for Mapper:
Iron Manta: I don't understand the other comments about this not looking good. This is gorgeous. I especially like how you've represented the twin stars as a nebulous blur. I'll admit that the lights on the ship and whatever's happening behind the ship are questionable, but otherwise this is great. 4

Paratus: The stars are a repeat of the Captain task, and the angles on the lighting on the planets seem to imply that they're much closer to the stars than they have any right to be, but other than this is piece is stellar. The ship and its trail are especially excellent. 4

Green Night: I can only see a repeat of the captain task with an added border.
The image feels very flat - I don't really get a sense of depth from it. What it does have that the others lack is a sense of perspective - seeing it from the ship's point of view is an interesting take. 2

Spoiler for Log Keeper:
Green Night: This feels more like a song than a poem,
and it's a song that I don't know the tune to. I can't get it to flow in my head, which makes everything seem disconnected. It's mostly the fault of the repeated lines. I feel like this piece isn't saying anything. 2

Paratus: This one also feels disconnected, but in a different way. The first stanza makes me think of campfire songs, the second stanza makes me think of Shakespeare,
the third stanza doesn't have enough syllables per line to flow at all, and the fourth doesn't seem to have much of a pattern to follow at all. That being said, the second stanza really is excellently written, and my points go to that alone. 5

Iron Manta: The note in the spoilers feel like it's trying to make the poem a lot deeper than it is. JCJ told me the "theme" of the poem in Discord, which is here in transparent text - a homeless person - and having been told that, I can see the connection, but I would never have worked it out myself. The main issue here is that the poem only loosely applies to "a barren planet orbiting a pair of blue dwarf-stars". In trying to force the second connection, the first was spoiled. 3

Spoiler for Mechanic:
Green Night: I like that the 'speed' elements comes from gameplay rather than a lore-based explanation. My only issue with it is that there's no way for the game to remember which card is the target. 5

Iron Manta: The negative mechanic of this card seems forced, and doesn't seem like it would come into use except in the rushiest of decks, but it's still a novel idea. 5

Paratus: My main issues with this submission are with the attitude contained within.
"ATK|HP: It's a spell", "ATK|HP: It's still a spell", "No art, we're already fed up with drawing space.", and the final part of the 'conversation' are prime examples. While the lore behind the card is founded on something and makes sense, its mechanic is not explained at all. 0

Votes done. Let me if anything I've said is blatantly wrong.

What timezone does the voting tool use?

Spoiler for Voting Thoughts (WIP):
Spoiler for Captain:
Depict a pair of blue dwarf-stars.

Spoiler for Example submission expectation:

Made in 5 minutes on Flame Painter. If any of you Brawlers are reading this, I highly recommend checking it out!

There were some very creative interpretations of the task here. Unfortunately, creativity isn't always a good substitute for fulfilling expectations. You can quibble about semantics and ambiguous wording/dual meanings, but I think there was a very clear intent from the task given the overall theme of the event.

The Paratus submission blows the rest out of the void, at least if we only consider image quality. Well done, DoctorC! I would recommend keeping any comments about making the submission in a spoiler, if inside the actual submission at all.

The Iron Manta submission comes as a close second for sheer hilarity, and it works well in placing the task into a greater story/theme. Maybe a bit too much theme in some places, if you catch my drift.

The Green Night submission technically fulfills the task parameters, but looks very low quality. I would still vote for it over the (admittedly hilarious) wikiuniversipedia article, but that's not a very high bar to set.

Spoiler for Mapper:
Depict your spaceship approaching an unknown solar system.

I think all teams got the idea, more or less. I'm finding it difficult to determine which submissions should get more points than others, and will likely vote in order of polish/clear design.

Spoiler for Space Trooper:
Create a deck that represents a barren planet. It must be 50% :earth: OR 50% :gravity:. You can also use :earth: and :gravity: cards from the Card Ideas & Art section.

Iron Manta has a simple and easy to understand idea, and the mechanics of the cards match the theme beautifully. Representing a barren planet by destroying your own dead creatures to power an ever-growing bone-wall? Well done.

The other three submissions technically don't meet the 50% rule. Since disqualification via that method leads to no legal voting pattern, I'm going to ignore it.

Battlestar Go Frak Yourself has a similar relation between the mechanics and theme, but the idea of the alien race is less appealing if the focus is supposed to be on the planet.

Paratus made a deck to represent a barren planet. Though their presentation could use work (card images, please!) and there's no backstory/flavor text, it's hard to argue that they haven't done a good job at what the task requires... assuming the off-element CI&A cards are legal.

Green Night has a good deck, but it's unclear to me what a Pulverizer represents, besides the EtG card. Is it some form of doomsday device? A naturally occuring disaster? Ancient mining drones gone horribly wrong? An omnicidal space whale? A quick blurb, footnote, redacted file, or encyclopedia entry expanding on this would have tied it to the theme very nicely-- but imagining it as the EtG card makes me think of something person-sized, not something planet-killing.

Spoiler for Log Keeper:
Write a poem describing how magnificent a barren planet orbiting a pair of blue dwarf-stars can be.

I wasn't particularly fond of any of the submissions here. I ended up just looking for minor flaws/errors and giving penalties to the submissions with them.

Green Night: "in" and "heaven" should be capitalized as the starts of new lines. (line 5, line 12)
Battlestar Go Frak Yourself: "No oceans, no creatures, no tree to see," breaks parallelism in your list by starting off with two plurals and then one singular.
Iron Manta: "and" should be capitalized as the start of a new line. (line 2)

Spoiler for Mechanic:
Create a space-themed card that has to do about speed.

Here, I'm looking for a space-themed card that has to do about speed. Optimally, speed is part of both the theme and the mechanic. Bonus points if it relates well into an overarching story of your journey, or at least to the other tasks this round.

GFY's Hyperspace is the clear winner, with a clear theme and mechanic meeting those criteria. I will say that it feels a lot weaker than a SoP/Chimera combo, but SoP is probably OP anyways.

Paratus' Rainbow bridge has a similarly strong theme, and I like the mechanic from a balance perspective. However, the two don't feel like they're tied together very well. I think you could've pulled it off if you presented your explanation/justification better.

Iron Manta's LS and FTLS just rubs me the wrong way. The name of the card is awkward (Light Speed is borderline. But Faster than Light Speed? Names should be one or two words. If you need more, then your basic concept needs to be rethought, or at least rebranded. Better sounding names might've been Hyperluminescent, Photon Drive, Photocelerity, Tachyon Emission, etc.) The mechanic also doesn't tie in well with the theme if we consider the existing acceleration card. If a normal acceleration is +2|-1 per turn, something accelerating to light speed should be orders of magnitude stronger. Since that wouldn't make sense from a balance perspective, I'd expect that difference in thematic power to manifest as a significant difference in utility/cost, which isn't the case here.

This card probably isn't as bad as I'm making it out to be-- but the name is throwing me off, and the vibe I'm getting is that it's insufficiently different from acceleration.

Green Night's Forgotten Martian has a cool mechanic, but the theme of the card doesn't match the mechanic.

Important Post

For our BOSS task, 'depict' does not mean a picture. 'depict' means use any form of description to create an image of a thing in another person's mind. the lore is not lore, it is the submission as a whole which depicts the scene. My character has depicted the scene to my partner back on Blistermarsh.

The lore is not lore, it is the submission as a whole which depicts the scene
I was just using "lore" to refer to the text-based part of your submission! If I were implying that it means the text isn't part of your submission, my submission would be a little hypocritical  :P
