1984 Mafia
Lore
The year is 1984, and the people of Oceania are trapped in the grasp of an immensely powerful and oppressive government. Their thoughts are manipulated by endless propaganda, and their every action is watched by the government’s telescreens. The uppermost officials of the government, known as the Inner Party, control the entire continent from the shadows.
To the Inner Party’s dismay, a small movement known as the Brotherhood is resisting their oppression. In response, the Inner Party has dispatched a few of their members to infiltrate the Brotherhood. The Inner Party plans to secretly kill one Brotherhood member each night until the whole movement is wiped out. Meanwhile, the Brotherhood has decided to lynch one person each day, in attempt to rid themselves of the Inner Party members.
Will the Brotherhood succeed in starting a revolution against their oppressors? Or will the Inner Party eliminate the last of their enemies to become unstoppable? The choice is yours.
How to Play
Mafia is played between two teams: the mafia and the civilians. The mafia win by killing all of the civilians, while the civilians win by killing all of the mafia members. There are more civilians than mafia members, but the mafia members all know the identities of each other.
The game alternates between a “night” phase and a “day” phase. During the night, the mafia may “night kill” one civilian by sending a private message to the host. The following day, the “town” (consisting of the civilians, as well as the mafia members pretending to be civilians) will vote to “lynch” one player, typically whoever they suspect to be a mafia member.
Some of the players have “roles” to help them win. Each role corresponds to an ability, which may be activated during the night phase by sending a private message to the host. Roles may be used either every round (ER) or every other round (EoR). Additionally, some of the players have items. Unlike roles, items may only be used once.
Player Rules
- All mafia correspondence among civilians must take place in this thread, with the exception of the use of the “Secret Note” item. Civilian players are not allowed to talk about mafia through private messages, Elements chat, titanpad, or any other means of communication.
- Mafia correspondence among players with the "mafia" role may take place privately. The host will create a designated mafia titanpad once roles are assigned.
- Players are not allowed to post or communicate about mafia if they have died.
- Players are not allowed to edit their posts. They should instead double-post.
- Players are not allowed to directly quote messages from the host. This rule is to prevent players from “proving” their role through unfair means.
- Players are not allowed to intentionally try to lose. Mafia may not kill each other through night kills or abilities, but they are allowed to lynch each other.
- Players are allowed to abstain from voting.
- Players are allowed to communicate during the night phase.
- Players may be prohibited from joining at the host’s discretion. This power is reserved for very, very few players.
Game Rules
- The night phase lasts 24 hours. The day phase lasts 48 hours. The game begins on a night phase. Players are allowed to send in their night actions during the day phase.
- The number of mafia will equal to the number of players divided by five, rounded down. There is one copy of each role, with the exception of the Vanilla roles.
- Whichever mafia member sends the most recent night kill private message is counted as the one who commits the night kill. Thus, a night kill can be prevented by killing the mafia member who attempts to make the night kill.
- When a player dies, their role and items are revealed to everyone, along with the cause of death. If a player is saved from being night killed, the Inner Party’s target will still be revealed.
- If the vote is tied, the player with the highest “lynch priority” will die. The highest lynch priority is the vanilla civilians, followed by civilians with a primary role, followed by mafia. If the vote is tied between multiple players with the same lynch priority, one of the those players will be lynched randomly.
- At the start of the game, two copies of each item are randomly distributed to the players, with no player receiving more than one item. Players are informed of their items at all points in the game.
- Items may be used by sending a private message to the host with the name of the item and the target, if necessary.
- Items are destroyed after use, with the exception of the Diary, which is transferred.
