Oh yea, I think one thing should be made clear.

THESE ARE AVERAGES. THEY ARE NOT CONCRETE AND ONLY OCCUR, IN THEORY, WITH AN UNLIMITED SAMPLE. DO NOT EXPECT PERMAFROST TO GIVE YOU THE STATED REDUCTION ALL THE TIME.

Had to get that out of my chest before people explode into how inaccurate the statistics are.

Nonetheless, this seems like a very interesting exploration. :)

Mizz, he means "an unprotected Perma", which DG will Explode long before it has a chance to really kick in.

Perma is useless against DG and Rainbow.
I call Shenanigans. Permafrost Shield is an absolute wrecking ball against Divine Glory.
Sorry i should have explained as Essence just did. I don't run a PA in my deck. But i am glad you brought that point to the forefront. I haven't used a PA for a while because for the most part it isnt necessary for most of the FG's and ends up just being a dead card. It would help out a little vs Rainbow and Chaos Lord. Probably be a moderate help to Seism. Most likely a moderate/big help to Divine Glory. Still not sure if i could justify putting one in but it makes it a closer decision.

As a rule of thumb I recommend everyone to triple check their numbers before questioning Delreich's math.
Word.  I was operating on the assumption that frozen creatures didn't deal damage on the turn they got frozen; with that assumption incorrect, Delreich is spot on.  :)

The additional benefit not mentioned in this thread is any frozen creatures cannot use any abilities while they are frozen.  It is a somewhat effective stop to ulitharids, stops growth creatures from growing, and so on.   So that is tacked onto the 47% total blockage, and the 2 damage reduction per attack.

Yep, there definatly is a reason permafrost is tied for the most expensive shield, my only question is why does diamond cost so much 8)?

Because -3 damage really does kill a lot of decks, quite simply.

Just the one thing I find about hope that makes it overpowered is the fact that it is immaterial on it's own.

Permafrost shield freezes creatures for three turns, 30% of the time (on average).
The freeze starts just after the attack, and ends just after an attack opportunity.
That means
  • a critter misses 3 attacks every time it gets frozen
  • a critter gets frozen (on average) 3 times for 10 successful attacks.
10 attacks + 3*3 turns frozen = 19 turns to do 10 turns worth of damage, or 9 of 19 attacks blocked. 9/19 = 47%.

If it had frozen critters before they did their damage, that would be 7 attacks in 16 turns (56% blocked), but it doesn't.

Wait... This shield doesn't Congeal for 4 turns? Aww...
To be or not to be, I can do both at once. Go learn quantum mechanics, n00b.
