I saw the face the first time I looked at the icon.  I did a double take and was like, "Our symbol is a face?  Wtf?"  I think that the red icon should be used, and it makes it look a lot better.

just in case people missed it since i edited it in the previous post...

ok, honestly i'm still learning to use this image manip thingy (pixlr)...i suck
this is what i came up with...anyone who wanted to have a go at it (and have sufficient PS skill, PM me and i'll give you the layered document *.pxd), by all means, please do

mark big :-

mark small (or as close as i can get it to be) :-

Like I said in chat yesterday, that bright red totally changes what the whole icon is about. I seriously doubt that it would have gotten as many votes as red. It's the monochromatic thing combined with the cool wings thing that I think gave you the win imo.

As a temporarily solution, I tweaked the icons a bit by adding yellow to it. As you can see, they are now a bit "dirty" which I think works pretty well. They are now more distinguishable from :darkness, yet they have the original feel of the icon without any major changes.

:underworldbig   :underworld

The other problem is the "face" that happens when you make the icon smaller. The main issue here is that the gap between those "feathers" is too small. When you make the icon smaller, the gap disappears.

To fix this, you need to make the gap bigger. I see that in that red icon, you have already removed the bottom feathers. Good, because that was the first step. The second step is to increase the gap between the remaining 3 feathers by moving the bottom one down a bit and then distributing them evenly.

We should probably start a new topic about this in the art section or something.

and i said maybe someone with better PS skill than someone who just stumbled upon pixlr, create something that the community like enough to vote for it should take over this fix
i'm a quick learner but maybe this is a job for someone else
though i can provide the PXD (pixlr layered document) to make it easy for anyone who wants to take over

btw i like the new background color and yeah, i figure out why i didnt like the red wings in the first place, i wouldnt vote for it either (monochrome all the way baby~!)

So I had a small go at it to see what some small tweaks would do. I tried removing the middle feathers, and this is the result.

I just did it with the paintbucket tool, I could do better with the file itself.

Here's what it looks like small .

I think it helps with the 'face' problem a little bit, what do other people think?

I think that removing 2 is too much. Removing only the bottom one (and increasing the gap) should be enough. When you remove two, it looks much less like a wing. Also when putting graphic elements like that, uneven numbers always look better because they look more balanced to the human eye.

I can give it a shot if you want. But I wouldn't call it "taking over" because all it needs is a very minor tweak to make the small icon look more identifiable. It would still be the original idea and design.

K, I had another go at it. The file kobis gave me had the grayer background, and I'm not sure how to change that, but other than that I think it looks decent.

So if you could tell me how to 'dirty' it up a bit I could do that as well.

Also, how do you save it without a background?

Sorry to waste your time but I did this already. :)

In case you are still interested, the color thing was done simply by adding some yellow.

When you posted this, I hadn't amended the fix actually (apart from the color). I updated it only 5 minutes ago. So if you stopped seeing the face, all credit goes to your brain. :)

Btw it's a known fact that humans tend to see faces in abstraOur brain tries to see a face in everything. ct shapes. There's even a word for this phenomenon (which I forgot). People seeing the face of Jesus in their toasts is one example of this.

Look at it like each wing is an eye, and the bit at the bottom becomes a mouth of sorts.
