k, i'm making an excel tool that will allow fair assignment of 13 teams of up to 13 players based on strength of opposition and fair linear assignment. I'll share it here for the community when finished. I'll put a results screen that will generate a report to be posted into the forums or copied to googledocs.

You're taking about seeding or something else?
If its about seeding, I wouldnt want to be decided by "strength", but rather by past distribution, making the seeding more spread out. In other words, teams should fight against everyone more or less equally, rather than more against some teams, less against other teams.

You're taking about seeding or something else?
If its about seeding, I wouldnt want to be decided by "strength", but rather by past distribution, making the seeding more spread out. In other words, teams should fight against everyone more or less equally, rather than more against some teams, less against other teams.
If you understand swiss pairing then this is how it works.
Players/teams do not play teams they already have unless there is no variance left and within those brackets, players/teams are paired so the most successful players/teams face each other.

 - If anyone wants any particular rules put into it, post here and I'll make a variant that includes it

why so?

Swiss is the most common matching format in the world because of its balance.
The divison of play means that one team isn't being molested because they got unlucky in the draw.
It also splits up pairis so one team doesn't have to play the same team multiple times in a round unless that team plays more gmaes than the number of teams left.

Do we want to pair up based on luck or balanced matching?

I agree.  I think some sort of strength of schedule would be nice.  Maybe you shouldn't pit all easy teams against each other, but it'd be nice if all elements had an equally difficult round each time.

I think it would be enough to make it more spread out, like malduk said. Things like three :death/:earth matches in one round are just no fun.

However, I am against a split in teams based on standings, just because that is against the concept of the whole war

Did you see our pairings this round, another 2x  :entropy and a  :fire for us to face. Seriously 4 of 12 potentioal opponents and we still get a double up? how fair is that?

 :life got double of  :fire
and  :gravity with only 3 games got double of  :air

That pairing generator needs some balance to suck some of the luck swings out of it.

I think my pairing machine looks great now.

Don't look at me!  Facing 2 x fire (one of which is master), 1 x entropy, 1 x light, and a water master isn't a ****ing party.  But if those are markers, meaning they're randomly one of the members of the team, that seems like 20 times more fair.
