Unstable Fireflies [trio][Air][Fire][Life][AI3][unupped][newbie] https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=46692.msg1040312#msg1040312

Once upon a time, the Oracle gave me an Unstable Gas card.  The deck I built didn't do well in the Arena, but it turned out to be amazing against AI3.  In my first trial of 20 duels, this deck won the first 8 in a row, ending with a record of 18-2, or a 90% win rate.  It is completely unupped with only 2 rares, which are fairly easy to get from the AI3 spins.  Combined with the relatively low cost of most of the cards in the deck, this makes the deck an excellent choice for newbies who want to grind AI3.

Play Notes:
1)
Always play Unstable Gas first.
2) Always play Unstable Gas first.
3) Play Owl's Eye and Fog Shield when you can, especially if the opponent is playing creatures.  Save as much quanta as you can for the UGs, though.
4) Play the Queens last (or any time you have no UGs in hand).  If another UG shows up, refer to notes (1) and (2).  Remember to detonate the UG BEFORE generating Fireflies or playing new Queens.
5) Finish off your opponent by overwhelming him with Fireflies, with assistance from the OE.

Strengths:
1)
Good CC from UGs and OE.
2) UGs get around shields (except Emerald Shield).
3) UGs deal significant damage quickly.  Usually, you can detonate 2 or 3 UGs before the opponent has more than 2-3 creatures in play.
4) All creatures and weapons get around the Wings shield.

Weaknesses:
1)
Emerald Shield makes the UGs hurt you instead of your opponent.
2) Susceptible to PC.  Steal can be really bad if your opponent has :fire.
3) Uses no PC.  Titanium Shield and Dimension Shield shut down your Firefly army.
4) Susceptible to rush and CC.  Even with quick UG detonation, if you can't get your Queens and Fireflies on the board and keep them there, the opponent can overwhelm you with large creatures in just a few turns.  Also, there's no way to get rid of Immaterial creatures (obviously).
5) Beware of devouring creatures (Otyugh and Scarab) when producing Fireflies.  You may need to knock down the devourers' HP first.
6) Slow initial quanta production, especially if you have more pendula than pillars on the field.  In the worst case, you will get your UGs into play but be unable to detonate them because you have no Fire Pendulums in play.  Go ahead and play your Queens, and they usually can overcome the opponent, anyway.

Although the Weaknesses outnumber the Strengths, the Strengths overcome the Weaknesses in almost every case.  When I faced a Voodoo/Pandemonium deck, the opponent had me cornered.  He took me down to 1 HP, yet I was able to finish him, anyway.  I apologize that I was so excited about winning this duel that I forgot to get a screen shot.

During my initial trial of 20 duels, I faced 2 opponents with Emerald Shield.  I defeated them both.  In the most extreme case, the opponent got his Emerald Shield into play immediately after I put down my first UG.  Fortunately, I was able to get my Queens into play quickly.  I overwhelmed him with Fireflies and won the duel with 74 HP remaining.  If you're looking for a strong, reliable deck to farm AI3, this is it!

Spoiler for UF win vs. Emerald Shield:

What's the average TTW?
My apologies.  I failed to record that statistic, and I didn't pay close enough attention to give you an estimate.  I plan to continue my trials out to 100 duels, anyway, so I'll keep track of that going forward.

Thank you for reminding me about that.  Are there any other statistics I should keep in mind?

Trials 21-40
record: 9-11
avg. TTW: 13 ... This is direct evidence of Weakness #6, slow initial quanta production.
avg. TTL: 11 ... This is direct evidence of Weakness #4, susceptibility to rush decks.  When it loses, it loses quickly.

Total
record: 27-13
win rate: 68%

Either my deck got really lucky during the first 20 duels, or it got really unlucky during the second 20.  Overall, though, t's still winning more than it's losing.

Well, at 68%, this seems to be less reliable than you made it out to be.

Yes, I noticed it.  It's similar, yet works differently.  It's kinda cool. :)

Less reliable than its first 20 trials, anyway.  I'm still going.  We'll see how the numbers look after 100 trials.

Losing quickly is actually profitable. Long matches that are going to end in a loss anyway waste your time, and time is money. It's a big reason RoL/Hope is so profitable against FG's. But yes, AI3 grinders are 100% speed (10% PC ;)), both because speed = money/h and because most AI3 are weak to rushes and strong once they get set up.

However.. if you get your hands on some SoFree's, an FFQ deck with tons of surplus quanta is a pretty vicious rush for two reasons: can't be CC'd, and grows in power every turn. UG's are also powerful against AI3 and Bronze Arena, but work best with drawing power (Dialgas) or put into a rush (6 Dragons and UG's is a common air rush).

Yours seems more like a PvP 1 deck, as it's a well balanced domination deck, though a bit low on :life. Still, that should translate into a fair winrate against AI3 too.

Interesting thoughts.

I agree that losing quickly is good.  I noticed that right away.

I have some SoFree.  I want to keep this one with minimal rares, though.  Once I'm finished testing it, I'll try a variant with the Air shards.

Only rarely is lack of :life a problem in this deck.  By the time you play your Queens, you've had enough turns for the :life to build up.  All the same, I'll try a variant that replaces the T-storms with :life :air Pillars and see how that works.  Thanks for the ideas!

The deck appears to be working toward stabilizing at around a 2/3 win rate.  That's nowhere near as reliable as its first 20 trials led me to believe it was, but it's still decent.

Once I finish 100 trials, I want to test it again using slightly different Play Notes.  I have a feeling I may be able to increase its win rate by getting my OE out sooner.  Then I'll work on modifying the deck and see where that leads.

I'll do all that tomorrow.  Right now I need to get some sleep so I'm ready for the PvP tourney in 6.5 hours.  Good night, all!

This deck relies too much in getting 2-3  :life pendulums in the first 2-3 turns to more or less work.

I suggest this build: only 1 Rustler to work, 2 Immolations for  :fire generation and not only 1 to avoid bad luck.

Spoiler for UF win vs. Emerald Shield #2:
Spoiler for UF win vs. Scarabs (barely):
Spoiler for UF win vs. Fireflies:

So apparently, the deck got super lucky during the first 20 trials to achieve a 90% win rate.  True win rate is approx 2/3.  Not the world's best farmer, but my best attempt so far at creating a farmer.

The deck's biggest counter appears to be Scarabs.  Out of 7 Scarab decks faced, the deck achieved only 1 win, and that because I had a good draw that allowed me to deal heavy damage to the Pharoahs before they could generate more than 2 Scarabs.

Emerald Shield seems like a natural counter for this deck.  However, I won 4 out of 5 duels in which I faced Emerald Shields, including 2 in which I absentmindedly detonated at least one UG before realizing I was hurting myself.

You have some good suggestions, Chapuz.  My concern about your revision is having only 2 cards to generate :fire.  Although you indicated that it's 2 cards instead of 1 to avoid bad luck, bad luck likes to be pals with me and my decks.  In addition, having to wait to get :fire means completily changing the gameplay.  Instead of playing UGs first to avoid hitting your own creatures, you play the UGs whenever you manage to get an Immo.  That would play havoc with your 2HP Fireflies, no?
