Hi, I'm Zawadx. Last War, I generaled Aether and hit rock bottom (12th place), only to rise back up and manage to finish as 3rd. That journey, was for me the Apotheosis which Aether stands for. On that journey I truly got to know Aether, and it's only made me want to Master it. I'm once again trialing for Aether, hoping that I can take the element to even greater heights.
Challenger's Entrance@All : Analyse your performance in trials so far (both phases) in a critical manner. Where did you go right? Where did you go wrong? What would you change if you could? You have 4 hours. (if someone wants me to answer this, pm)
I have to admit that I could not put my best into trials. I had to rush Phase 1, and so couldn't find the time to finish up my Mastering the Cards entry (I'd wanted to do a full scale article on fractal, but could only discuss the rushy fractal archetypes). I am satisfied with my other phase 1 entries, and thought the Tourney Idea was pretty cool. But I don't think they have enough pizzazz to get an bonus points :/
For phase 2, I decided to perform an experiment with the in-element matches by creating a strategy focused on dims. Given my elements, that worked out pretty well. vs Deuce this plan was improvised, and I depended on my traditional style of mindgating to win (which gets stronger the more games played in the match, since you can predict better). But then I had bad luck in game 3, which stopped my reverse sweep cold (I had Catatitans and Mono remaining to his time duo, light duo and rainbow; catatitans would struggle but mono would be pretty secure for at least 2 wins).
vs Regy, I might have lost game 1 due to a misplay (I expected him to have just 2 shield bypass; he had 3 and so could confidently have them to break through). And the catatitans faildrew for me, despite this one being a pretty great build for quanta and catatitans :/ vs Probacon, my only loss came due to a blackout during G1 where my AI lost a won game by playing dims vs 5 RoLs...
vs rippy, I made the unfortunate mistake of settling bans at 2 am. That made me have one less ban, which was pretty relevant as he his whole arsenal vs me. And then he managed perfect immo draws twice (srsly, it was 2/3 immos, perfect fodder and 2/3 hitters by T2 both times) against catatitans faildraw and a derp of not replacing Psions with recluses in the anti-fire deck. Grabbow vs Air Nymphs was iffy due to wings, but I had a decent chance if I had a fast start (which I didn't :/).
And some questions for all trialists:
If you become the 10th Master of your Element, will you be the War General?
If you become the 10th Master of your Element, will you be the Brawl Boss?
If you become the 10th Master of your Element, what are your goals? What is the minimum that you could achieve that you'd look back on and say 'Yes, I did a good job there'? Please be realistic.
tbh, I'm not sure if I'll be able to General or even participate in War.
Actually this needs a separate paragraph. This year, I've been selected as a member of my country's team for the International Math Olympiad. Which is supposed to be the most prestigious event for high school students in the world. I've been practicing as much as I can, hoping that I can make my country proud. Unfortunately, that means I can't really put much time into EtG at all. This is the main reason behind my inactivity these past weeks. Now, the IMO will be over by 16th July. But depending on how I perform there, my life will prolly change A LOT. So I just can't make any promises, especially about such a huge event as war. But if I can, I will definitely lead Aether.
Don't think I'll be a good brawl boss, so I prolly won't do it.
My goal is to win war and return Aether to its rightful place at the top. I'd also like to solidify a vision for the element, but I'm not sure if I still have the enthusiasm for that. I'm not sure if I have any more emotion left to pour into giving aether a form :/
Now that the broad strokes have been painted, let's advance to the finer details~
Spoiler for Aves:
People often complain that aether is OP. Is it? If so, how would you change things so it is not? Is it not? Explain some of aether's weaknesses.
I think that it's not so much about aether being OP, but about other elements not having enough good stuff. Yes, dims are unhealthy for the game and should probably be 2 turns unupped, 3 turns upped (this makes the upgrade a significant buff which lets it stay strong in fully upped pvp and gold/plat, metas in which I think it's fine). Fractal is a monster for card advantage, but it's pretty amazing as a card and really showcases EtG's awesomeness for me. You could give Psion -1|+1 and make psiontal and MA a bit less aggressive past shields, but it could generate new horrors and unbalance the meta even further towards aether counters. Of course, having more varied and interesting ways to counter aether in all elements would be a good thing, as it sets up a decent check to stop Aether becoming too OP and adds to the game.
Aether's biggest weakness is creatures above 6 health - if these can be strong hitters then they are going to cause problems. Cheap attackers are also big vs Aether since aether has a traditional quanta handicap - often the simple quanta advantage decides games. Nightmare is decent vs fractal, tho most decks besides fractal rushes can survive through it. Steal and deflag are far worse as counters to dims, but they can be exploited by using the dimshield effect.
Spoiler for ji412jo:
In the same sense, everybody says they'd remove a card or two or many from aether. If you were to remove 1 card from every other element, what would it be?
(and no all shards, all weapons etc easy answers)
- Butterfly Effect: It's too weak to even be memorable. Maybe you could replace it with a stronger version, or a more interesting design.
- Flesh Spider: I really like death's design, very well-knit. Flesh spider is the only thing which stands out as unthematic... slightly. I suppose you could replace it with better spiders elsewhere, and make elite mummy relevant.
- Shard of Focus: It's way too OP to be in the game....
- Antlion: cute, but it could be so much more. I'd replace it with a suite of burrowed stuff.
- Cockatrice: it's usually just worse than frog. You should at least make it a midrange hitter with a 4-6 quanta cost.
- Fire Spirit: Forest Spirit and lava golem do it better; fire eater too.
- Mind Flayer: Could be so much more than simply lobotomy
- Luciferin: To make holy light better.
- Fog Shield: Infuriating hax
- Think they're all pretty good, tho Fate Egg could be buffed. But they're all good for the game.
- Dusk Mantle: See fog
Spoiler for Submachine:
For all trialists for all elements:
- How would you represent yourself in a comic if you wanted to be recognized, but without saying anything in the comic? Describe your looks.
- How would you represent your element's "essence" as a character in a comic? Would it have a gender? Describe its looks.
I would be the psion with blue flames. I think krzy has made that iconic enough.
If you can manage tho, a lightning version of Colonel Roy Mustang would be perfect x)
Aether would be represented by a perfect, somewhat amorphous being (which means its details look very fuzzy), surrounded by increasingly spread out circles of floating matter (representing divergence). The Aether nymph looks like a good model for this.
Hello people! Imma ask some "getting to know you" questions.
1.For everyone: Is the element you are trialing for your favourite element? if its not then which is and why didnt you trial for it? If it is then which is your 2nd favourite and would consider trialing for it next time if you dont win these trials?
2.For everyone: Do you value higher the general of an element in war or the element itself? (for example your favourite element is but STANDIN became the master of would you want to join the great master STANDIN or your favourite element no matter what general it has?)
3. For everyone: On the other side of the coin. As a general yourself, would you value higher more active players that may not hold your element as their favourite or players that have your element as their favourite but arent so active-or there are other problems-?
5. Challengers Only: assuming you make it to the finals. How would you react if the master didnt draft you in the coming war?(considering you want to be in the same team)
6. Last question for everyone: Why do you want to win trials? Why do you want to be a master?
thank you. kthxbai
1. Yes, Aether is my favorite element. After it, I really have never played favorites and like them all. Though it'd prolly be one of Air, Fire or Darkness. But no, Aether is the only element for me~
2. It depends. If there's a really bad general who picks a horrible team, I wouldn't want to be part of it even if it was my favorite element. But if the general is alright, I'd definitely favor Aether (or fire/air/darkness) because I have more experience with them and would be of more use. After that, I'd prolly focus on the general more.
3. Activity is a must for me. Honestly, war with an inactive team is not fun at all. If you can at least be somewhat active, then having Aether as a favorite will score you brownie points.
5. I'd be quite surprised, since I believe I'd be a big threat for aether otherwise. But stuff happens over the course of war, and so I wouldn't take it to heart.
6. Really it's to prove to myself that I can. To prove that I have mastered Aether, by beating the best Aether (pretty much the best player in terms of elemental loyalty) at this. It would be an ultimate step of the apotheosis aether signifies for me
Spoiler for justaburd:
Chirp trill chirp chirp?
Warble?
P.S. Really more for the challengers: What do you think you'll do better than the current master?
Bzzt.
I'll have more of a presence by being more active. And be more passionate.
Spoiler for Aves:
If you become/remain master, who is going to be your favorite minion?
Pshht, I don't do minions. srsly tho, I'm not close enough to anyone to make them do all the work (except all of my co-staffers, but that's another story
). If I became master, I'd try to make deuce my minion. How cool would that be?
To all: How has your favorite element affected your life?
To me, Aether has always been the element of imagination, the stuff of dreams. My imagination has always been a refuge for me from an early age; it's a place where I could go and be me with no repercussions. It let me develop the creativity I consider my greatest asset.
Aether is also the element of Apotheosis, which is my ambition in life. And this drive/hope/ambition has actually let me go further than I believed possible. So, to get a chance for the IMO team you need to participate in a series of difficult TSTs (Team Selection Tests). This year there were 6. Now I've been doing this for 3 years, but my first 4 TSTs were only mediocre. Even some people who were giving the TSTs for the first time were ahead of me. Plus we had to change locations, and in the process I got a serious migraine attack. But I still had the drive to keep going, and didn't give up. Thus I managed to pull ahead in the last 2 TSTs, and actually had the highest score in the last one. Highest, in the entire country x) That's what you get for not giving up, and that's the gift aether (the drive for apotheosis) has given me.
