DECKS:
Let me start by saying this. I was rooting for KDZ. I've been disappointed in myself ever since the last war, and life deserved better than last. I mean sure, I could have appointed a general, but life master is supposed to be the BEST life player! I was sincerely hoping that didn't apply anymore.
So the first thing I did was stealthy. I didn't ban his favorite life cards. Without spirits? Without phase shield or fractal? Without flying weapon? Killz would have been crippled. Instead I banned the counters to my decks. I didn't want to use banning cards as a weapon, more as a shield. I wanted to see if he'd solved his two biggest problems.
1. Killz couldn't rush.
2. Killz couldn't adapt.
So I loaded up my anti-spirit deck and fought Killz, to see what happened. He lost. Easily.
52g 52g 52g 52g 52g 52g 52g 52g 52i 52i 52i 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5c6 5c6 5c6 5c6 5c6 5c6 5c7 5c7 5c7 5c7 5de 5de 712 712 712 71c 71c 71c 71c 71c 71c
What could his spirits do? They can't outgrow poison, and once locked, he had nothing. And, predictably, he didn't even take a shield. My cells damaged him to death. He couldn't outrush it.
1-0 Gl1tch.
Now the question was, could killz adapt? Could he come up with a counter to my deck? If I took the same deck, would I just plow him for five fights? And the answer was no. He adapted He made a fractal frog with lobo and outrushed me.
1-1
So, now pretty sure he could adapt, I made my next deck. Fractal poison, to see if he could rush.
5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5c8 5c8 5c8 5c8 5c8 5c8 5cg 5cg 5de 5de 5de 5de 5de 5de 5de 5de 6rn 6rn 6rn 6rn 6rn 6rn 7aj 7aj 7aj 80i 80i 80i
(6 scorpions, the rest life pendulums)
Well, I screwed the pillar balance up in the deck, and he defeated it relatively easily. But, if I remember correctly, he played a rush deck. This was new. It wasn't perfect, it was more of a creature spam than anything else, but it was an improvement. I needed to fix my deck to make sure it was an actual rush deck, proving him the better man.
1-2 KDZ
So I fixed my deck.
5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5c8 5c8 5c8 5c8 5c8 5c8 5cg 5cg 5de 5de 5de 5de 5de 5de 6rn 6rn 6rn 6rn 6rn 6rn 7aj 7aj 7aj 80i 80i 80i
He played an adrenaline stave deck with dragons, but they got killed by my shields and I out healed him.
2-2
Aggravated he was switching back to his old standbys, I played my anti-spirit deck again. He played his spirit deck again.
3-2 Gl1tch
I decided to go flying staves, my counter to the predictable phase shield stall. And he did something that surprised me.
He rushed.
5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5c2 5c2 5c2 5c2 5c2 5c2 5c5 5c5 5c5 5c5 5c7 5c7 5c7 5c7 5c7 5c7 5cg 5cg 5oi 5oi 5oi 5oi
3-3
It was at that point I knew that I would lose. He had done it, he'd fixed all his problems, he was the better man. So I gave him the fight he wanted. I brought out /the/ deck. Adrenaline time.
5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bu 5bu 5bu 5bu 5bu 5bu 5c2 5c2 5c5 5c5 5c5 5c5 5c7 5c7 5c7 5c7 5c7 5c7 5cg 5cg 5oi 5oi 5oi 5oi
And he outrushed it. It was close, but he rushed. I couldn't have been happier. 3-4 KDZ.
I dropped the best rush deck I had, and it's anti-rush as well. To beat it, 70% of his damage had to not only be more than my damage, but it had to kill me BEFORE I dropped wings. And he outrushed it. I didn't think it possible.
5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bu 5bu 5bu 5bu 5bu 5bu 5c7 5c7 5c7 5c7 5c7 5c7 5cg 5cg 5og 5og 5oo 5oo 5oo 5oo 5oo 5oo
Killz did EVERYTHING to earn this position, and I'll be damned if someone says otherwise. I'll be honored to serve under the best life elemental in the game.
The old king is slain.
Long live the king.

Heh. I'm also glad you won so that epic avatar gets use. I'd never pick it over dapper swain =P

I'm disappointed after seeing the decks. You had a month to prepare and didn't even use life towers. You went easy on him. Could be so much faster. Even with only 12 upped cards.
-
kdz really should post losing decks as well and commentaries... no fun if the winner doesn't do anything :(
gl1tch wrote an epic saga(?). What are you gonna do?
i like your first anti-spectre deck, gl1tch. Very original.

later ok gg :p

I actually used an extremely similar deck like Gl1tch's anti-spirit deck against KDZ last trial when I was facing him. I was experimenting with that deck and it had a couple of impurities that cost me the battle, I used frog instead of virus, which took 1 more turn to die and more quanta to cast let along not having the ability to CC. Ironically, KDZ also used a spirit deck when I used the my version of the anti-spirit deck, except he took dragons as alternate damage. A pretty big part of my failure on that fight is because the deck was unupped, bonds and aflatoxins were really expensive without upgrading. As a result, his spirits kept on thriving happily and his dragons pounded me despite being aflatoxed. In the end, his spirits all survived, with only 1 dying 1 turn before I'm dead. I failed to set up the bonds before he rush me to death. Gl1tch probably came up with this deck on his own, I think I am one of the first if not the first to use this combo, though I failed.

Quite dissapointed. But I knew something was up when I saw Gl1tches ban choices
Shard of Gratitude
Eternity
Quintessence
Thorn Carapace
Firefly Queen
Pufferfish
Quint-I understand. Immortal Growing forest spirits are not cool. And would have completely ruined his counter.
Eternity and Thorn Carpace- a dead giveaway that he was going to use adrenalined, flying staves. I'm sure that KDZ could have packed a fire shield, and foiled him just as easily.
Pufferfish- For me it seems half a ban. The chance KDZ would use the unupped counterpart is very low, since it means going into two elements other than his own. The upped one doesn't seem so powerful that it is worthy of a ban (although if I am wrong here, someone correct me) as he had healing in every deck.
FFQ- No comments? Seems a bit of a wasted ban?
SoG- Staple really. Fair ban.
The smart thing Gl1tch did here was not banning Forest Spirits. Meaning KDZ was predictable in his actions (and Gl1tch won the two games in which he used forest spirits)
Now onto KDZ
rustler
pest
antimatter
hope
Dimensional sheild
Rain of fire
Less to say here. Banning rustler IMO was a bad move, because if he didn't then KDZ could be fairly sure that Gl1tch would use a variation of his old trials winning deck.
Hope also seems a wasted ban here since (correct me if I'm wrong), Light has no epic synergy with Life after rustler, and it is unlikely that he would use it. A more predictable ban (SoG maybe) would have been put to better use.
However, this post seems very negative in general (Sorry :P) Congrats to both the Old master, and the new one. You both deserve/d your position.

hope is an annoying little bastard to all of lifes creatures.

My main deck design revolved around the ability to /kill/ his creatures, and it had a fatal weakness in momentum'd quint'd spirits. I could pretty much guarantee he wouldn't pack momentum, but quint I was worried about. So instead of taking both and making it obvious I was going for CC, I got rid of quint. Next I got rid of Eternity and Thorn Carapace. The former was because my main deck was a deck-out deck, and eternity made that impossible, and the latter to throw him off. KDZ, if that card weren't banned, was likely to never play it anyway, but by banning it it looks like I'm going for an adrenaline rush. He took the bait and started bragging about fire shield. Next I banned pufferfish because of the water/life poison deck. KDZ has a water mark, and his favorite duo is water/life. As long as the only water/life deck he could build was spirits, I'd be okay. FFQ was /not/ a wasted ban, FFQ duos so well with life it's ridiculous. In fact, I have a sneaky suspicion he forgot it was banned and put it in a deck, meaning he couldn't play it and his deck was useless. Or he just played a flying stave deck. SoG I just don't like.
If you look at the cards I packed you'd see a pretty obvious picture. I was going to adrenaline rush. I got rid of eternity, thorn carapace, SoG, FFQ, and Pufferfish, all of which are used in decks that can cripple frog rushing. And, because last trial I used adrenaline to ram his creatures into my thorn, I banned quint, making him think I'd do that again. And, since it was obvious I was going to adrenaline rush, look what deck he packed first game? By was he surprised when I went for CC!
If you'll remember the actual banning cards thread, KDZ made a post laughing at my choices. I'd left his favorite deck untouched! But he'd demolished mine! Why, it was almost as if his opening deck was completely predictable but mine /had/ to be something unprecedented. And, my sneaky other ulterior motive to make sure KDZ was in fact better than me also benefited. By banning these cards, the temptation to go back to the old standby fail decks was there. But every time he did, I beat him. And, lo and behold, by the last three games he was rushing like a good boy.
(Just an FYI KDZ, you won game three. You had 11 HP, I had 7 HP, we both had ridiculous amounts of damage, but you went first.)

Thanks for the insight Gl1tch. I don't really have the time to go back and check people's trial decks, so seeing you lay out your strategy and choices for bans and decks was interesting. It'd be nice if every one in the Finals commented on their strategy in banning and deck building.
