Five upgrades isn't really all that much. That's about the disadvantage I think is ideal - still gives the Master enough of a boost to be challenging, which is the whole point, but in the range where outplaying them with bans and deck selection is still extremely reasonable.

I probably would prefer to chat with people that feel strongly about it, instead of trying to respond a bunch in this thread.  Turn-based giant text blocks are less conducive to listening and cooperation than real time conversation.  I just felt it important to give this discussion some framework and try to appeal to both sides.  Maybe there are people on some other position I'm not considering, and I'd be glad to talk with them too.

As a brawlmaster, I can say that during the planning of Brawl there were no consideration about element affinity. The vast majority of Masters do not sign up to be bosses. Aside from also  being a large forum event there is no longer any real connection between Brawl and Trials.

If you still want Brawl points in Trials because it's a large event, sure. But personally I think the connection should probably be cut completely (If I'm still BM next brawl I'll probably not give any boss preference to Masters, not that it has mattered in the past few brawls) and keep in mind there are no longer any elemental connections aside from what the teams themselves decide to do in a task.

Only benefit I can see to brawl giving trials upgrades is in encouraging people to play brawl, but how much would that really affect it? If even one more player is encouraged to brawl because of this then it is worth it, but I'm not sure that is the case.
Even speaking as 'Mr Brawl' the connection is now tenuous.

Do you really want people to register for brawl, when they aren't motivated to participate, but just want points for trials?

I think linking Brawl and Trials does no harm, at least. If somebody's unmotivated for Brawl, they're highly unlikely to join just for the chance at Trials points-- it's a significant effort for a very small gain.

I can see why you'd want to make Trials a PvP only event, but that's what we have PvP WC for, ostensibly. The major events all have thematic links. There's a reason we're the Elements Community Forums, not the Elements PvP Community Forums.

Im not making trials a pvp only event. You could give points to other competitions aswell or make it a choice.
I just don't see the reason to value brawl higher then other (non-pvp) competitions (as a link to trials).

While not quite what I interpreted him meaning, I'll touch on this.

Tournaments and Events, and such are a show of PvP achievement, not so much elemental affinity. Brawl in the past used to be linked to it, and even in the present, even though it isn't intended, fragments of it still sometimes show with how people choose to name their teams. I'm happy with Competitions being represented in some sense, but since Brawl is the most capable to be represented for a few reasons (it is the competition version of War, for instance), it seems like the most able for the job.

I highly respect Fippe's opinion but that doesn't mean I agree with it. In my point of view, Brawl and elemental affinity should be linked somehow and, therefore, Brawl and Trials should be linked too. Moreover, I hate beholding the responsibilities of every master to become more and more PvP-based and less forum-based if you know what I mean...
