Phase 1 - Proving Your Worthiness - COMPLETED!
Phase 1 has ended
This phase is different in each Trial. It usually has something to do with helping out the community, but it can also be something where you show your skills as an Elements player. Both the Master an a Challenger can skip this phase (and not get points) if he or she so chooses.
Below are three different options. Each participant has to choose and complete two of these options.
OPTION I
Elements the Game
Fighting False Gods
1. Design a unique anti-False God deck and post it on the forums.
Rules:
- at least 33% percent of cards have to be from your element. For example if you are participating in the Trial of Fire and use a 30 card deck, 10 cards have to be from Fire (Pillars are included).
- any number of cards
- any mark
2. Go fight False Gods with your new deck and take a screenshot of you beating 12 different False Gods. Trainer can be used but the use of "More Power" button is prohibited. You have to use the same exact deck every time.
3. Post both your deck (or a link to it) and the screenshots on the "Phase 1" topic of your element.
OPTION II
Elements Forums
Card Idea Series
1. Design 6 new card ideas.
Requirements:
- each card belongs to your element
- cards have some kind of synergy between them. Each card must have synergy with at least one of the other 5 cards.
2. Post all 6 card ideas in the "Card Ideas and Art" section.
3. Start a card series topic for the cards where you explain the idea behind the series and talk about the synergy between the cards. Finally include a deck (in text form) that uses those 6 cards (as well as current cards if needed).
4. Post a link to your card series page on the "Phase 1" topic of your element.
OPTION III
Elements Wiki
Featured Article
If you go visit the new wiki, you will see that there is an animated "Featured Articles" showcase on the front page. Goal is to get high quality Featured Articles that we can advertise on the front page. Trial contestants now have a chance to proove their worthiness by writing an awesome featured article. Best articles will be promoted to "Featured Article" status.
1. Write an article of at least 1500 words (use http://www.wordcounttool.com/ to count the words). You can write about anything as long as it is Elements related. Browse the forums for article ideas. Your article also has to contain at least one image so that we can put it on the front page.
2. Post your article on the wiki (requires registering). If you have problems with that, ask Scaredgirl (or one of the Wiki Editors) for help.
3. Post a link to your article on the "Phase 1" topic of your element.
After you have successfully completed 2 of the options above, you will receive the full 10 points. If you complete only one option, you get 4 points.
Remember that how well you do during Phase 1 will most likely affect your score during Phase 2 (the vote).
If you have any questions, please post them here.
Good luck everyone.
P.s. these rules are still subject to change.
-
Time to get crackin. Do we need to say here what 2 we are doing.
-
Time to get crackin. Do we need to say here what 2 we are doing.
Nope. But you can if you want, so that you will avoid a situation where two people are secretly doing the same thing.
-
against the fgs, alwaysexactly the same deck, or could we make changes, as long as 33% stay of our element?
-
against the fgs, alwaysexactly the same deck, or could we make changes, as long as 33% stay of our element?
Same deck.
-
Awesome.
This is going to be quite interesting.
Do the cards ideas need to be legit?
Must they attempt and make the crucible?
-
ad synergies: something like phoenix-ash (is ash then a card?), or just work well together (like immolation-photon, for example), and must all 6 cards do that or for example always pairs so 3x2 cards, that have a synergie?
-
Where are featured articles?
-
Can FG decks been made with In Depelovement Cards?
-
Hm. This actually provides a VARIETY of competitors in terms of what they're able to do; I like this 'choice' option that you've set up SG ;).
Deck construction (strategic skills), card design (creative skills), and writing articles (communicative skills).
If we choose to do all 3, is it possible that we can base our score on which two we did 'best' on?
-
Holy, these are all hard tasks. Very time consuming certainly.
-
It should be noted that Some cards are different between the Open game and the Trainer. Pufferfish comes to mind which is now 3|5. This also changes the aspects of gods that have the cards being tested added to them where they don't exist in the full game.

Ow.
Since I'm doing the Trials of Water, I'm probably using Pufferfish in Trainer. Hope that's not a problem. :/

You tell me.
Awesome.
This is going to be quite interesting.

Cards have to be "Crucible ready" but they don't have to get into Crucible. There's no time for that.
You expressed interest in helping out with Trials. Now is your chance. I need someone to make sure all the cards are legit aka "Crucible ready" (no need to move them though). It worked out pretty well since it's basically your job anyways. :) Only difference is of course that this might be some extra work because of potentially high volume of new cards in a short period. You can put all the other cards on hold until we finish Phase 1.

Both those examples would work.
Each card has to have synergy with at least one of the 5 other cards.

Yes.
Hm. This actually provides a VARIETY of competitors in terms of what they're able to do; I like this 'choice' option that you've set up SG ;).
Thanks. Yes, I wanted to give people options so they are not forced to write 1500+ word articles with broken English.
Holy, these are all hard tasks. Very time consuming certainly.
Hm.. I don't know. I think they are pretty easy to be honest.
Option 1.
This should be easy to all FG grinders. Most time consuming part is probably taking those screenshots. The whole thing might take a few hours but its' also playing Elements so I don't think it's a big deal.
Option 2.
Again, very easy for card designers. If you don't have your own ideas, just visit the "Steal My Idea!" topic.
Option 3.
Sounds worse than actually is. For example 9 Tips for Better Deck Building (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,3329.0.html) article has 1702 words and it's not that long imo.
It should be noted that Some cards are different between the Open game and the Trainer. Pufferfish comes to mind which is now 3|5. This also changes the aspects of gods that have the cards being tested added to them where they don't exist in the full game.
That's a good point. Unfortunately there's nothing we can do about that because even if we banned the Trainer, it would be easy to cheat and use it anyways.
So the Trainer can be used no matter what the card situation is.

Can we have a child board for Trials entries?
I'll post a topic that candidates can put their entries in.
I'll move them into the child board once they are crucible ready.
-
Also, can the article be an extension of something we've already worked on and/or written?
-
I think I'll go for the article (I like writing) and false god deck (for the challenge). Obviously it will focus around wings, but I'm curious to see if I can make it a duo or trio instead of a rainbow. I'll do the false god deck first. Should be a lot of fun! Great options, Scaredgirl (especially since I'm probably going to epically fail at the false god deck, so I can resort to cards...)

greaaaaat. 3 things I SUCK at xD /wrists
I recall you saying you would have given Essence a run for his/her money if you could sign up for Trials of Water. ;)
-
Hmm, for Section 3, can I just write up about :light in general? So a big overview on it
-
this will be fun to watch
-
Also, can the article be an extension of something we've already worked on and/or written?
You can steal a previous idea but the article itself has to be at least 75% new material.
greaaaaat. 3 things I SUCK at xD /wrists
So you suck at:
- deckbuilding/fighting FG's
- designing cards
- writing articles
If that is true then maybe being a Master is not your cup of tea? :)
Hmm, for Section 3, can I just write up about :light in general? So a big overview on it
Sure. You can write about pretty much anything.

For the FG deck, i built an initial deck, and have been tweaking it as i've been playing. I've beat a few gods with a couple different versions of the deck (changes held to a few cards) and so my earllier screenshots have cards like "steal" in them, though they aren't in my final version of the deck, is this a problem? My real question is, do all the screenshots of the gods being defeated have to be with exactly the same deck?
-

You have to use the same exact deck every time.

Edit: Ninja'd
-
Yeah using the exact same deck makes it pretty difficult. I would actually like to tweak my deck a little bit but since i've already plowed through 6 of the FG's (Decay, Graviton, Osiris, Morte, Elidinis, Neptune) i'm hoping i can make it through 6 more.
ETA - Too bad we can't pick the FG's in the trainer. That would make this much easier.
-

AGREED.
Oh well. I'm picking options 2 and 3. I like designing cards, and as for Featured Articles... GUESS WHAT! I ALREADY WROTE 8 OF THEM! 8) :P

Oh for crying out loud..... I just finished the 12 and with my final one (Miracle) i accidently copied over my DreamCatcher file.... so now i have 11 again and beating DreamCatcher sucked. >:D >:D >:D >:D >:D >:D >:D
ETA - Lol, just got DC again and by some Miracle was able to beat him

I just got distracted talking to my brother about Sean White skateboarding in the X games and I forgot to SS my incarnate win, luckily that's not too bad of a god.
edit: wasn't paying attention again and I had 4 of incarnate's vampires antimattered so he killed himsefl while i wasn't looking.

Can I ask why so restrictive?
With these rules we can't use current in-game cards in our deck and it has to be pure mono for ideas rather than just element related.
-
seems like in-development cards are also usable for the FG challenge. awesome.

You are right. I made them a bit less restrictive.

I've come up with 3 unique plausible decks and they all fail miserably. With air, I'm basically trying to fit nymphs, wings, fireflies, or queens into it, and nothing unique works so far >.< GAH THIS IS FRUSTRATING. I also tried aflaotoxin+unstable gas....nope
-
Just a heads up for those using the word count tool. For some reason it doesn't count numbers so it will actually give you lesser amount. In word i have 1,872 words (including numbers) and the tool counted 1,623.
-
I spell out my numbers most of the time, I think it looks better that way.

I believe in literature, there is a rule based on syllables or digits. I think it's something like 5 digits and below spell it out, 6 digits and above, use numbers. (can someone verify this?)

Spelling out "ninety-nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine" is not necessary when you can simply write "99999".

I am not a wiki master. I made some slight errors in my article that i posted and i edited it but the changes are not showing up. Does it take a little while for it to update?

When you make an edit, the cached version gets reloaded and you should see the new version instantly. If you don't, maybe your browser shows the old version or something. Everyone else should see the new version.
-
For the record, Ctr-F5 should be the shortcut to refresh the page and its cache.

As I design a LOT of cards (check out the portfolio in my sig if you don't believe me), am I allowed to use previous submissions that have already made the crucible?

As I design a LOT of cards (check out the portfolio in my sig if you don't believe me), am I allowed to use previous submissions that have already made the crucible?
Probably not.
Also: I fixed the adrenaline article. It was missing a lot of information, and I would have dropped the idea except it was perpetuating the falsity that adrenaline makes creatures live multiple times, which simply isn't true. The article is now complete, correct, and with 1500+ words. I also uploaded like four decks to the wiki so I wouldn't have to link to the forum. It should be up to standard. Still, if you decide redoing an already featured article is unacceptable, I suppose I still have time to choose another card.
-
Gl1tch, why didn't you point those things out when I originally wrote the Adrenaline article?
it was perpetuating the falsity that adrenaline makes creatures live multiple times, which simply isn't true
It doesn't? Then how do you explain abilities activating multiple times?
Also, I don't think I see your changes.
-
Blood, I did. Repeatedly. If I recall, it was kurohami who wrote the article.
it was perpetuating the falsity that adrenaline makes creatures live multiple times, which simply isn't true
It doesn't? Then how do you explain abilities activating multiple times?
Ah, and that's the beauty of it. There's two reasons that should happen. Either the ability activates on living, and you live multiple times, or it activates on attacking, and you attack multiple times. There is but one subtle difference.
Emphatic bond activates upon living.
Seeing as EBs do NOT stack with adrenaline, it must mean they the creature only attacks multiple times. Poison, freezing, stunning, and other options happen with every attack. And it makes sense too. If you attack, poison speeds up in the blood stream, you break out of us, you un-stun. But if you "live" multiple times, then EB would have to trigger.
-
No, EB doesn't trigger because EB doesn't have Adrenaline. At least that's how I would think about it.
It was Kuroaitou who wrote the first draft of the article, and I changed about 75% of it when I wrote the second draft.
And I re-checked the poll thread. I don't see you correcting the "live multiple turns" thing anywhere.
-
Fair enough. Point is, it's done now. Take it or leave it.
-
Huh? You sure you updated the article properly?
Never mind that. Stupid caches. *grumbles*
But there are a few minor problems. For example, all card names and abilities should have the first letters of each word capitalized. Also, try not to add too much detail about a certain deck or decks, because the article is a card analysis, not a deck analysis. You can simply link to decks. I might edit the article a bit if I have time.
And again, I don't think that bit about Steam Machine is necessary. That part should be in the Steam Machine article, not the Adrenaline one.
-
It states how adrenaline stacks with variable attack creatures. Far more relevant to adrenaline than Steam Machine.
-
Okay, that makes more sense. Sure then.
But you still need to fix your capitalization. For example, it's not "horned frog", it's "Horned Frog". If you have time, can you fix it? It makes the article appear more "official".

Ok, I'm working on an article for the wiki, but before I do a ton of work on it, I want to make sure this style is ok. I guess I'm going more for an infotainment piece. The whole point of the article is to not just give a newbie some decks to copy and voila, now you can work your way to fighting gods. I'm actually trying to teach them why and how to play the game strategically. I guess kind of the "If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime." But I wanted to make sure this style of writing is okay for a wiki.
Strategy Primer for EtG or, A conversation I have with a perpetual loser wherein I try to teach him how to play elements successfully and strategically rather than just picking random cards because "Dude, that Dragon is awesome!"
“Hey Drag! Can you help me learn how to play this game. I keep losing against AI2.”
“Sure. Let’s see your account.”
[img]Loser Account[img]
“Wait, wut? How did you get a negative score? You’re such a loser.”
“I know. :( That’s why I’m asking for your help.”
“Ok, so yeah, let’s start from the beginning then. Time to reset that account and start afresh. Ok, first an element. Every element has their strengths, but Fire is the best . . . at least for our purposes. Why fire? Because it has almost everything you need to learn how to play this game.”
“But I think Death is so cool! Can’t you teach me with Death?”
“Ok emo, do you want to learn this game or not? Then shut up and listen. We’re using fire, m’kay?”
“Well, ok, but I still think Death is cooler.”
[img]Pick Fire[img]
“*Sigh* So, reset that account and pick Fire. Now we’ll play the first game with the starter deck.”
*Loser plays Level 0*
“Dude, I rock! I just beat Level 0 and I still had 23HP left.”
“You realize that’s like the easiest AI in this whole game? And he has like half the HP you have?”
“Whatever dude. I won. My deck is awesome!”
“No, your deck sucks. You noticed that time when you had Water cards but no Water quantum? Yeah, that’s because your deck is trying to do more things than it is properly built for. So here’s rule number one, keep it simple, stupid. You don’t pack one of every dragon in your deck because you think dragons are awesome.”
“Hey dude, that’s what I did last time!”
“Yeah, that’s why you had negative score. So keeping it simple means keeping it as small and efficient as possible. It means taking only cards that work together to help you win. It means having some type of strategy.”
“Oh yeah! I have strategy. Crush the enemy with my dragons, bwahahaha!”
“Yeah . . . nice strategy. But before I teach you the next thing, let’s streamline that deck. Get rid of all the Water cards and the Quantum Pillars. They get in the way more than they help.”
[img]KISS[img]
“Awww, do we have to get rid of the Blue Crawler. He’s got these awesome tentacle-y things coming out of his head. I bet he can use those to whi—”
“Forget the pictures, ok! The pictures mean nothing in this game. If zanz added a hot chick in a bikini as a card doesn’t mean you should pack 6 of them in your deck. If he added a fat Buddha as a card doesn’t mean you shouldn’t add it because he looks lame. Pictures are just that, pictures. It’s what the card does that matter, okay?”
“Dude, I’d add 6 hot chicks into my deck if he ad—”
“Nevermind, let’s keep moving . . . "

Unupped death rocks too. (it's even better than unupped fire, actually) :( Forcing someone to use Fire instead of their favorite element is bad advice, especially since you called him emo for liking Death. :-X I liked the bikini part though. :P

Could we make a second card series.
For example:
My current series is name Earth, Exploitation of quanta-Generation.
Could i also Make another series as the second part of phase 1.
If yes it will probably be name Earth, Exploitation of Quanta-Deprivation

For example:
My current series is name Earth, Exploitation of quanta-Generation.
Could i also Make another series as the second part of phase 1.
If yes it will probably be name Earth, Exploitation of Quanta-Deprivation
So you are suggesting that Trial rules don't apply to you and you should get full points for doing the card part twice?
Let me think about it..
No.

Lol, you should probably go ahead with the second series, but also do something else for the Trials, like either the FG deck thing or the Wiki article.
I would love to get an extra 50 points, Scaredgirl. The rules don't apply to me. I exist to break rules. (and sarcasm detectors)

Unupped death rocks too. (it's even better than unupped fire, actually) :( Forcing someone to use Fire instead of their favorite element is bad advice, especially since you called him emo for liking Death. :-X I liked the bikini part though. :P
1. I'm going for the Master of Fire title. Of course I'm gonna say Fire is the best. But that element also has what I need to teach him some of the different strategies in the game that Death doesn't have.
2. This is an imaginary conversation; therefore, I can call him whatever name I want and I can tell him to do whatever I want. I have all creative power, mwahahaha. :))

Just to clear things up, if my article fails to get featured, it doesn't count, correct? It needs to actually be featured?
My deck building article can be found here (http://elementswiki.co.cc/articles/building-a-better-deck/)for all those interested. Feedback is appreciated.

It doesn't have to be featured for you to get the points. Only if your article is REALLY bad, it can be disqualified.
But this doesn't necessarily mean that article quality is irrelevant because I would imagine that your phase 1 actions will affect your phase 2 score (vote).

This week's Featured Card is Flying Weapon, and I'm already required to write an analysis on that. Can I just submit that analysis for this trial?

Sure.

I wouldn't assume so but is there any issue with someone completing all 3 Options?

If rules ask for only 2 options, I see no point in doing all 3 unless you only want to help the community. But if that's the case, then there is no need to even mention that, just submit the two and do the third one in "secret".
Doing all three and posting links to all of them in the Trial topic is fishing for votes which is not allowed.
During phase 2 you all have a chance to explain why someone should vote for you, and on that topic you are allowed to post any links you want.
As a conclusion: Everyone posts only two links in their Trial topic.

Hmm Ok. Have to weigh up between card ideas and wiki topic.

I was going to do all 3 as well, I'll probably do the wiki artice, though, since I already have a good chunk of it done.

I hope everyone has their Card Ideas in the review topic.
There has been a lot less than expected.

Phase 1 has been completed.
