if you put a pillar of an element would you be classed as using that element or must you use one of the card from the list to represent an element

Sigh - I hoped no one will ask this question really. Pillars/Pendulums/Mark Cards are counted as their respective element, just as you can find those cards under different element section in game, or as they are classified in Deck sections.

So how many of each cards in each of the seven elements do you have to use?  I'm just thinking that you could do some rather annoying things like:

24 darkness cards
1 nova
1 photon
1 immolation
1 earth pendulum
1 spark
1 soulcatcher

Or something like:
24 fire cards, fire deck mark
1 earth/water/air/light/time/air pendulums (or whatever strikes your fancy)

Or even something like:
54 light cards
6 junk dead cards from other elements

If you mean trying to build a mono in this tournament:

You cannot include more than 3 copies of the same card in a deck. (excluding pillar/pend/mark cards)

So according to the allowed card list, aether has 5 cards which has the largest number of card in all elements, and it means at best you could make a 30-card deck with 15 aether cards in it. Therefore I fail to see the point of your examples.

Well, then that should make things a lot better.  I haven't thought about what decks are possible yet but on the surface it seems like it should be quite interesting.  Also, I suppose all of the 0 cost nonpillar cards I listed are banned anyway :p
