Shantu 2 - 0 andretimpa

Spoiler for Decks:
50 minutes before the start I found myself trying to decide if I should sleep for a few hours or stay awake and let coffee keep me alive. Good thing I checked the tourney topic, otherwise I wouldn't have known it was tourney time. (I haven't been following them much recently). So I entered the chat room and loaded up Elements...

First deck I built. My first and only game with it against one of the elders was crap so I didn't play a single game with this.

An obvious choice, used this twice one of which was a loss in a mirror game.

Wasn't brave enough to use it but it could have been good in this creature-heavy meta.

Used once against a pestal. To prove those who say upgrading chrysaora is bad wrong: won thanks to two physalias happily chipping away my opponent's life despite being quanta locked.

My favorite and most used deck, I think it didn't lose a single game. Switched the wings to fog against jijo.

Drawing inspiration from my speed poison encounter, I built this during the horribly long wait for washington. Both times I used it it worked like a charm.

-round 1 game 1 WIN vs zso_zso (time/light/air hope/eternity)
-round 3 game 2 LOSS vs rem4life (entropy/air/? damsel dragon/CP rush)

Firestall seemed the most obvious deck to me, given the deck construction rules.  However, that meant people might be prepared for said choice...  Against zso, he had this interesting luci deja vu hope eternity thing, and he kept breeding deja vus with his eternity.  I couldn't play my nymphs due to eternity, and I couldn't find a fire shield for a long time, but I had just enough stall (barely!) to win.  The lone miracle was the MVP; without that, I'd have lost.

-round 2 game 2 LOSS vs 0911 (death/aether/air spiderwings)

This looked really fun, and interestingly I thought light and time were the 'obvious' choices for nymph pendulums.  Zso picked the same deck, only he used death and aether in his...   In the game I used this, I got completely locked out by a wings chain, and my light nymphs could only hold off for so long.  I thought this might do better, being quite fast, but when I saw just how easy it was to lock it down, I abandoned it.

Didn't have the guts to try this one.  I didn't think it would succeed in the meta, and looking back at what I faced, it might've won against a few of the decks I faced, but not many.

Again, another deck that looked like fun, but I didn't really expect to win.  Animate weapon seemed a strong candidate for a pseudo trio, but I couldn't think of anything that I thought would be competitive enough.

-round 4 game 1 WIN vs andretimpa (flying glories)
-round 4 game 2 LOSS vs andretimpa (flying glories rewind)

Man, this deck was so fun to play, and a lot stronger than I expected.  I originally built it with quicksands last night, and then realized they were banned... so I had to tweak things a bit :p  I used the steel golems and a couple more dark cards instead.  I got a 5 ttw in one game :D  I lost when andretimpa got lots of rewinds and kept throwing my shriekers back at me, followed by a miracle.  A vamp dagger might've bought me the time I needed, but I never got it.  This was definitely my strongest deck today.  Lots of really heavy hitting, hard to kill creatures backed by quite a bit of disruption and CC meant it was quite difficult to beat.  A wings or dimshield chain would've proven difficult, but I had a lot of CC, so I hoped to be able to simply wait that out, if needed.  Andre's flying glories hit the biggest weakness of this deck; immortal creatures.

I was trying to think of a way I could use a trio with a 4th element as a mark.  This was the only thing I could think of.

After realizing quicksand was banned, I had to change the deck somewhat, and after that, it didn't look very good, anymore.  It didn't look that good to begin with, and even if quicksand had been legal, I doubt I'd have used this.

-round 4 game 3 LOSS vs andretimpa (firestall light/time, he had mirror shield)

It suddenly occurred to me about 2 minutes before the tourney started that a variant of bonebolt might be quite successful here.  In game 1 I managed a win, although if 0911 had had more upgrades in the deck, it would have been closer, though I suspect still my win.  I used it again against andretimpa, only I tweaked it because andre had used flying glories twice in a row, so I did things like take out the rage elixirs, hoping I'd face the deck again.  Instead, I went against firestall with sancs, dials, and miracles.  And... mirror shield.  Without that mirror shield, I'd have bolted andre to death, but as it was, I was the one who ended up bolted to death.

This was quite an enjoyable tourney, for several reasons.  One, there were a -lot- of different competitive decks available, and I don't think any one deck really dominated.  Comparing my decks to Shantu's, the only one that even really bears any resemblance to each other is the nymph tears ones, and maybe the hope one, whereas often the top 8 players or so in a tourney all end up posting the same decks with like 2-3 cards variation, and it's just luck who made it further.  (like 2 weeks ago, when everyone played monowater and I had 6 monowater mirror matches out of 7 games, or even last week, everyone had the same half dozen or so decks)  Two, there wasn't any really dominant deck this time, or at least nothing that really stood out to me as being dominant.  There wasn't the feel of rock/paper/scissors, either, like in some tourneys, that might be otherwise balanced, but are basically pure rng due to the best decks being counters of each other.  Thirdly, it was the first tourney in quite some time where I felt that the player who eliminated me (andretimpa) did so due to deckbuilding skill as opposed to random chance with the rng, which is always good, though keep in mind I probably have an inflated opinion of myself and that I always rant at rng :p (though I still wish I'd won :p  damn that mirror shield!)

After seeing the rules I figured 2 cards would be used a lot because they didn't require delicate balancing of the quanta and so didn't slowed down the deck: Congeal and RT. So I built my main decks with either immortal creatures or creatureless, so the opponent would have dead cards.

My decks:

Rock

Animate Weapon was really powerful with these rules, since it was easy to fuel. To counter RT I used Morning Glories. Since I had the quanta I went with Miracles. I splashed RT to deal with creature decks and Mirror Shield to deal with Firestalls.

The deck went 2-3 (won against Laxa, lost to DANIEELA because of bottomdecked Morning Glories before she played Hope, went 1-1 against dragonsdemesne with a weird draw with no RT followed by a normal one and lost to Shantu's Pestal)

Firestall was also powerful in this meta. Because of this I decided to make a Firestall able to counter a regular Firestall. I made it a bit fatter than needed, added a Farenheit and some Mirror Shields.

The deck went 4-1 (won against Laxa, beat DANIEELA twice with the first game being quite tense, won against dragonsdemesne's Firestall because of my shield and lost to Shantu's mummy + RT + arsenic which was the best deck I saw during the tourney)

Didn't used it but worked well against Firestalls during testing (just in case someone also had the idea of adding mirrors to their stall)
