There Can Be Only One

Players challenge each other to duels. Winner gets stronger and loser is eliminated. In the end THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE.

1. SIGNING UP
Anyone with a forum and chat account can join this event. Start by reading the rules very carefully, then join by posting on the separate SIGN UP topic.
Players must also choose an elemental affinity. This affinity grants you special abilities, plus a bonus by using cards of that element.
If your element has a Starter Bonus, you must choose this when selecting your Elemental Affinity.

	Parallel Universe	Elite Dragon - Elite Immortal	You may select either Dimensional Shield or Fractal. If you use Dimensional Shield in a deck, you must include at least 2 creatures with [Immaterial]. If you use Fractal in a deck, you can only use elements you have an Elemental Affinity with.

Banned: Dimensional Shield, Fractal, Shard of Freedom, Discord, Shard of Patience (Except for the Starter Bonuses).
Restricted cards and weapons can only be use if you have that Elemental Affinity.
You may only use the shards of your starting Elemental Affinity.
You may NOT use Nymphs that match any of your Elemental Affinities.
"Other" cards are freely usable.

2. CHALLENGING OTHER PLAYERS
This event is all about challenging other players.
In the CHALLENGE THREAD, simply state: "[player], there can be only one."
To accept a challenge, state: "[player], I accept your challenge."
Players have 36 hours to accept a challenge. If not done in this time, it will be counted as a 'decline'.
After accepting a challenge, players have 36 hours to fight the match.

After the match, a player is immune from being challenged for 24 hours. However, they may challenge other players, if they desire.

Each player may only 'decline' one challenge, any after will result in elimination.
If a player has multiple challenges, they may accept whichever they want, voiding other challenges against them.
You may only challenge one person at a time.


3. INACTIVITY
Players are required to challenge at least one player, or accept a challenge, every 4 days. Failure to do so, will result in disqualification. Please make sure that if you join this event, you also have time to participate in it.


4. DECKBUILDING
Each player starts the event with 2 upgrades. Defeating a player adds their upgrade total to yours, allowing you to use more upgrades in your deck.
Defeating a player also grants you their Elemental Affinity.
At least 1/3 of your deck must match your elemental affinities.

5. BATTLE
The amount of battles will be based on the total # of upgraded cards between the two players.

6. AFTER BATTLE
Both winner and loser must post the result of their match battle results topic. The winner also posts their upgrades.

The more battles you win the stronger you will get, but as soon as you lose you are out.


7. WINNER
There can be only one, so battles naturally go on until we have only one player standing.


8. REWARD
The winner of the event will receive the following forum award icon:
The top 4 players will receive World Championship points (10/4/2/1).

This seems like common sense, but are free upgrades exclusive to whatever element uses them? It wasn't exactly clear in the rules post.

EDIT: Also noticed that the affinity is supposed to give "special abilities". Is this just code for "Hey, here's some cards you can upgrade for free" or is this an actual ability to be used during the event?

Or.. you can play a match right before you leave, giving you immunity from challenges for 24 hours. Then you get a 36 hour minimum window before you get a 'decline'. And then another minimum 36 hour minimum window before a 2nd 'decline'. Or accept the 2nd challenge right before the 36 hour window ends and then you have another 36 hours to play the match. EZPZ

What happens if timezones are so different that you cannot schedule a match except in the weekend?

Can a player be challanged if people know he will be away, but didn't post it? Some lame stuff can happen.
"Will you do fun things this weekend?" "Yes I have visitors over and bla bla bla" "Ok let me challenge you after you log off"

What happens if almost everybody challenges the same person because they all want a bye?

If 1 player has 16 upgrades and the other has 14, due to a bye, is it a best of 3, 5 or 7?

These things haven't really been an issue in the past. So, if it does happen it will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

This event promotes playing matches or you won't have the upgrades and elements to compete properly. Remember... There can only be one!

If one has to go away for that long, then it's probably more important than this game. In that case, forfeiting the game should not be a problem, though it might feel frustrating at first. Also what majofa said.

Question for majofa: Is this only the second iteration of this game or did I miss a few?

The deckbuilding rules are all over the place, so let me try organizing them.

- Affinity Element is a fancy name for elements that you own or unlock.

- Each player starts with 1 Affinity Element and 2 upgrades. If you defeat a player, you get all their Affinity Elements and upgrades.
Your decks can use any element at any point, but at least 1/3 of your deck must match your Affinity Elements.

- Players can use any element, but not any card. The following cards are normally banned:
Dimensional Shield, Fractal, Shard of Freedom, Discord, Shard of Patience, nymphs that match any of your Affinity Elements, shards of not your starter element, RESTRICTED cards of Affinity Elements you don't have, and weapons of Affinity Elements you don't have.

- If your starter element is Aether, Entropy, or Water, you can ignore a few of these bans. See the details under STARTER BONUSES.

- You can only upgrade cards mentioned under FREE UPGRADES if you have those Affinity Elements.

Rule change suggestion:

--> At least 2/3 of your deck must match your Affinity Elements.

This gives much more importance to what elements you have.
