You don't actually lose it. Its like an anti, you get it and the reward if you win.

is the arena AI intelligent enough to immolate phoenix's or does it just prioritize them too high to kill?

There is no 'Arena AI'. AI will not immolate phoenixes (upped or not) unless they're lobo'd or in some cases antimattered.

Is it possible to play against your own deck in the arena?  I've never seen my own deck yet.

Yes, it's just very unlikely since your deck is one out of 500 to face.

I don't know if it was asked in this thread, but I've seen it asked elsewhere, and my arena deck is in the perfect position to answer it, so I'll put it here for reference:

Q: At what win/loss ratio will decks 'break even' for rating?
A: My deck just happens to have a 14-4 win/loss ratio right now and has exactly 0 rating (in platinum) so at least right now it's roughly a 3.5:1 ratio, but that will probably evolve over time, since the formula for arena rating is unknown.  It's 10 points for a win, but losses I think it depends somehow on the opponent who beats you, because I don't think it's a constant number.

Wins aren't consistent either, but based on plays and entries of new decks, so that 0 points means being ranked somewhere around 250. I have gained between 5 and 16 points (the range is probably even wider, but thats what I have seen myself) per win on platinum leaguedue to that.

Its not a constant number, but not because of that. THe number varies by the current state of the game, so at some times in platinum 1 win will net you 8 points, at other times it will net 12 points. But from what I've seen a loss is always a stable number, in platinum a -40 pt penalty per loss.

I haven't played elements in a while, so the arena is new to me.
Do you have to use those cards that it gives you in your deck?
