Update from 8.1 to Windows 10?

I received a new Windows 8.1 OS last year, which had the built-in opportunity to update to Windows 10 at any time for free. I didn't want to make this decision though, because 8.1 was doing fine and I heard rumors that it takes a while for the system to adapt. Now however, the free offer will end at July 27, so if I want to upgrade to 10 efficiently, I only have this month to do so.

Personally, I really like 8.1, so I'm mostly interested about the drawbacks of not upgrading, but all personal experiences with Windows 10 are welcome.

i am in your same position, i upgraded from 8 to 8.1 because windows 8 give me a lot of problem, windows 8.1 is just fine

about the part of free until 27 july: in my opinion is simply a way to push u to upgrade your OS, if u bought a pc with 8/8.1 will be always free, windows wants u to have windows 10.

u can always try to update your OS, after windows 8 every pc has a way to reinstall the original OS without lose anything (songs, movies, etc) similar to a formatting

Yet to run into any problems with Win10. It's smooth and makes shit easy for you. That said, I have high end PC's now and therefore I can't say anything about how much of a drain the OS is on a lower end PC. You just need to do a bit of research with your main concerns in mind.

Since "upgrading"

-Sound didn't work at all, and some other minor problems I was able to fix with looking up tutorials.

-My taskbar occasionally decides it wants to be a black strip without anything working. This includes teh start menu which can't be accessed by windows key, volume function which cant be accessed with shortcuts etc. Restarting helps.. sometimes. This has happened less in teh last week or so, but not completely gone.

-After going for a while, anything with video on the internet (streaming, youtube, online tv etc) stops working, freezing on the first frame. Restarting the browser fixes the image, but will be silent. Restarting pc fixes for a while.

I had none of these problems beforre the upgrade.

I have some bugs(if I use the mute button sound with headphones plugged in sound won't work unless I plug them out), but otherwise Windows 10 runs pretty well for me, definitely consumes less resources than windows 8 because I've noticed a pretty big increase in fps whenever I play something and everything lags less.

I also have 8.1, but I don't want to upgrade. Everything works fine for me, so why take the risk? It looks like you're in the same situation.

I'm personally content with Windows 7 so I have absolutely no desire to change my OS to Windows 10.

This happened to me to. I managed to revert to windows 7, however. Microsoft is actually forcing windows10 onto people.
The OS itself is fine, but I just find w7 better.

In comparison to w8, as my parents have both w8 and 10 downstairs, I'd say windows 10 is slightly better unless something goes haywire.

This happened to me to. I managed to revert to windows 7, however.

Yeah I'm not sure why she wasn't able to revert to her previous OS but I do know she had contacted our IT guys to come and fix what they screwed up in the first place. I'm not really sure where things went from there.

Not sure if this is applicable in your situation or not, but Microsoft changed windows 10 from an optional update to a recommended update a few months ago.  They did this because they knew that many computers have the "automatically install recommended updates" option selected on their PC.  The more PCs that have Windows 10, the better their market share numbers look.  Microsoft will tout those figures in order to boost sales.  Sneaky, but that's business for you.

I said all that to say that it's possible that your IT guys may not have installed Windows 10 on your boss's PC, and that it may have installed on its own.  This situation has happened a number of times in my service field since Microsoft made that change.

My roommate had Win 8.1 for some time and it didn't work for her in many ways, so she upgraded to Win10. She says it is not too comfortable, but better than Win8. My friends, on the other hand, went back to their Win8 after upgrading because too many things went wrong, ranging from sound problems to random freezes.
Many German computer sites critizised Win10 to hell and back, so I'll stay with my Win7. And honestly, if I need to buy a new computer, I will use any other OS rather than the perma-bugging spy called Windows 10.
