After some of us went missing we had to stray from the paths we usually stick to. Very few people come to the forest of nightmares voluntarily, as the name already suggests and it is highly advised to stay on track with the haunting season about to start.
While this is a pretty bad situation, it allowed my thirst for knowledge about the wildlife in unseen areas to be quenched. Today we made an amazing discovery! Not one, but at least 2 completely unknown species crossed our path!
One of our soldiers misstepped and was attacked by leaves covering a creature he stepped on. I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't seen it, but it seemed as if the leaves themselves actually attacked us while the creature remained idle. Some soldiers sliced both of them before they could possibly hurt us, but I must admit that I felt a little sad afterwards. I wish I could have observed more of their behaviour while they were alive! Still, this encounter was enlightening indeed, and it didn't stop there. The creature was lying in a pit that was covered by the foliage that seemingly assaulted our companion. The hole was just deep enough to contain it, making me think that the critter was not there just to be safe, but maybe was waiting for unalert prey to come by. Some organic remains and its sharp teeth back that theory of mine further, and its relatively small mouth suggests that it prefers smaller animals, which is probably why it itself did not attack our companion immediately (though it might just have been in pain). Consequently, I decided to call this creature the Pit Lurker. Its claws look well suited for digging and the strange behaviour of the leaves around it, as well as the perfect fit, suggests that it didn't fall into the pit by accident, but rather dug it itself. Some of us wondered whether the leaves actually trapped it there ( not getting it, but while they are a mystery to me, that thought is just obscure).
Which brings me to my brief observation of the behaviour of that unnaturally moving foliage. When not moving, it was indistinguishable from ordinary leaves (on the outside), making us question whether it was just a figment of our imagination. However the men that took care of it were seriously hurt and we saw that it wasnt the lurker's doing. Furthermore it didn't stop moving immediately after the lurker was cut in two and only fell to the ground after some more slicing. I wonder whether it might be an actual living being or if it was just unknown magic used by the lurker. Another thing about it was rather off: Some of the leaves were covered in a secretion that glued it to the organic remains we found. I initially assumed this was a byproduct of the pit lurker's eating habits, but closer inspectation of the ripped leaves showed that same secretion leaking out of them. Cutting some untouched leaves yielded the same result. Could this greenery really digest whatever the lurker doesn't eat? Does it intentionally cover and maybe even protect the lurker to have it trap prey for it? It is too bad that the King ordered us to stay away from larger piles of leaves, I really wish to find out more.
I am now kept busy, though. Soon after the kill a strange bird appeared, its wings seemed to be made out of shadows, never flapping. It cawed and soon many more turned up. They seem to be scavengers, living in flocks. While most of them proceeded to eat the dead lurker, some of them started following us. A few of us felt a bit unsure about them, but many appreciated the company, especially I, excited by new study projects! Do they follow us in the hopes that we kill other animals and leave some scraps for them to eat? I tested this by ordering one of our men to hunt down the next animal we encountered. Sure enough, the birds cawed, attracting more of their kind.
I am undecided whether I should name them after their stalking behaviour or their strange wings. For now I will refer to them as Blackwings, but Stalkwings could be a good name too. Soon, more came, following us into the deeper woods.

| NOTES: | Trade off burrowed for more attack. Once unburrowed, can't borrow back, hence can't activate its ability again. The creature first unborrows, then devours, making the final stats 7|5. It is possible to pay for the ability and then cancel, the way you would on Shard of focus, but in that case the stats will be 6|4, considering it does not gain +1|+1 from devouring if it does not devour.
