Once my knee heals (snowboarding injury, whoops) I'm interested in getting into this.

I used to run regularly, but rather than trying to run for longer each time, I would try to beat my previous best time on a track I made through the forest. I think my first attempt took about 27 minutes, and I managed to get it down to 19. I stopped when I moved house and never got back into it, but I'm keen to pick up running again.

Would there be enough interest to make a public Google doc for this? I think I'd draw quite a bit of motivation from seeing my progress alongside everyone else's.

That is how you train speed, and it's a great method. I used to run 30 minutes out and then try to get back in less than 30 minutes. However, these methods don't usually translate well to a general community who is just trying to get out the door and run longer. That said, I could keep a parallel log for those working on speed. It sounds like there is interest.

Would there be enough interest to make a public Google doc for this? I think I'd draw quite a bit of motivation from seeing my progress alongside everyone else's.

I've just started up running again about a month ago (was a cross country runner about 4 years ago, but mostly stopped after that).  Using MapMyFitness and running 5x per week, is there a way to make a group/friend list in the app?

Yes, there is a friends list, but not groups. I'm not a big fan of the "MapMy*" products because they're chock full of ads and seem more about pushing products than helping you track your runs, but it does work well and might have the features you like. If you want to compete against a group of friends in your app, maybe give Strava a look.
