Advice on fair project. https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=42590.msg530711#msg530711
« on: August 08, 2012, 06:31:31 pm »
I had a bit of a dilemma and I wanted the highly educated members of this community to help me make a decisions,

well,I am a secondary school student (alliteration makes my English teacher happy) and my school is about to hold its first ever science fair.....
and there is a bit of money on the line here.
See,in my school there are two houses,
each house will be represented by 3 projects per class,2 science projects and 1 math project.
I can only do 1 project,I don't know if anyone else will be able to do the math project,I would really prefer to do the science(I'm better at it).
I have never done a math project and I'm not really sure what I can do there,
if I do take a math project,I really want something exiting.

My thought for a science experiment would be super-cooling.
I mean, thats something that is exiting(turning liquids into solids in seconds)
however, its something hard to replicate in a school situation :/
Still,my long explanation would be the finishing move on the other house  ;D.

so? any advice,Ideas are really appreciated.
(I'd appreciate if you actually mentioned projects I could do)

So, you're 13-18 yrs old, right? Just asking so I can think of age-appropriate science projects...

Are you in any advanced placement maths? You could always do a radians to degrees proof for some trig functions. I did one back in the college days, so might be too hard for you if your not there yet in your education.

I seriously bombed my Science Fair, so much so that it still makes me shudder now that I think back to it.

I might be able to give you some advice on math-related projects... if you can give me an example of just exactly what you're allowed to do in such projects.
To be or not to be, I can do both at once. Go learn quantum mechanics, n00b.

Yea, it would be really helpful to let us know your age. LARGE knowledge difference between a 13 and 18 year old student  :P

Exactly what type of science/math class you're in/have taken would also be helpful. Any Advanced Placement or IBs? Honors/Advanced Courses? Intro courses (Algebra I, Bio, Chem, Physics)?

Discuss with the members of your house. I was in the same dilemma long long time ago. Now, my advice is that you stand up and tell them that you can better contribute in, that would be science. They wouldn't mind if you are better. The best should stand up and lead, the rest would be happy to follow. Don't venture into something unfamiliar and regret later.

I beg to differ. ^-^

However, you are right, we need to know hellfire's to giver proper advice.

Hellfire: I would suggest doing the project you want to do. The cooling thing sounds nice, and if you really want to do it, and it is practical, go for it!

Oh,did I mention it was super cooling water?
You cool pure water to a temperature at or just bellow 0 degrees,it will still be in liquid form as there is not enough energy to alter the bonds between the molecules,as soon as the water is disturbed, shaken, slammed on to a desk or poured onto a piece of ice.
The water will freeze as it will absorb the kinetic energy transferred into it.

also,I picked the science project,

and just as we are on the topic,I'm 14,and I am doing additional mathematics(A-level maths)
and I'm good with physics and chemistry.

There's not much to present for pure mathematics except pages and pages of rigorous proof. It's easier if you have 1337 experience with animated graphics and doing something like geometry, but otherwise, I'd stay away from these types of stuff for a science fair.
As for applied mathematics (statistics/modeling)...Psh, I'd rather do science (physics).

We had a "highschoolers-show-elementary-schoolers-science" fair last year, and the best project by far was a liquid nitrogen cannon 8) that shot potatoes. It was built with bathroom piping and powered by placing liquid nitrogen into water bottles. That's right. It was a real-life DIY derptater cannon.

Super-cooled water? I've seen some youtube videos on that stuff, so it should be awesome enough. But if you wanted something more "explosive"... super-heated distilled water ftw. 8)

What happens to dry ice in super cooled distilled water out of curiosity?
