[Psychology] What keeps you checking and adding to the forum? https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=34391.msg434116#msg434116
« on: December 03, 2011, 12:20:33 am »
Since there was no Psychology branching in the Off-Topic Discussions I felt it appropriate to label this.

While most of us know why we love the community, why do we really keep checking and adding to the forum?

Honesty is key.

Do you want to feel more unique by being able to customize your avatar to a greater degree?[/li]Do you want to feel "popular" by having a high post count?[/li]Do you get a feeling of excitement to see the community's response to your thread?[/li]Do you feel guilt when you do not post anymore after having established a posting trend?[/li]Do you feel excited to see the new threads people have made?[/li]
What pushes or pulls you?

Discuss.

Well. I agree with all of them except for the Popular post count one. Actually, the first one too. I feel excited to have a response to my question.

Do you want to feel more unique by being able to customize your avatar to a greater degree?[/li]
Couldn't care less.  I barely had the ambition to give myself a gravity nymph avatar :p

Do you want to feel "popular" by having a high post count?[/li]
Never cared about being popular.  I do like having respect, but that comes from quality, not quantity.

Do you get a feeling of excitement to see the community's response to your thread?[/li]
Don't really care.

Do you feel guilt when you do not post anymore after having established a posting trend?[/li]
Nope, though I doubt I have a 'posting trend' anyway.

Do you feel excited to see the new threads people have made?[/li]
If they're good ones, sure.
I check the forums primarily to look for new deck/card ideas and for pvp information, such as upcoming tournaments, War planning/info, etc.
I post mostly to ask questions or share information (ideas/feedback on decks, cards, etc) or because I'm killing time at work :p

Do you want to feel more unique by being able to customize your avatar to a greater degree?
I like to be fancy, so, while it doesn't necessarily make me feel unique, it does make me feel good I guess... and I do like art in all its forms (music, visual, etc.)

Do you want to feel "popular" by having a high post count?
This is a hard question, because I have a very high post count, but that's mostly because I don't use the chat a whole lot, so all my discussions are on the forums, which results in a high post count. As for if it makes me feel popular, meh... I don't think so...

Do you get a feeling of excitement to see the community's response to your thread?
Almost always, I like to get feedback on my threads, and so yeah...

Do you feel guilt when you do not post anymore after having established a posting trend?
Not exactly sure what this means

Do you feel excited to see the new threads people have made?
Some of them, yeah... New tournaments, new competitions, new PvP Events all give me a surge of excitement, some deck threads also give me a surge of adrenaline.

Feel free to also point out other points that make you want to check the forum and continue posting.

In time, maybe reasons can be made into categories and a poll made.

EDIT: Ironic, 2000 posts with this one. ^_^

For me, it's mainly three things:
  • Desire for fame
  • Desire for power
  • Desire for importance
That and the fact that I love the game and community ... and I'm a staff member, so I also feel inclined to post as a responsibility.

Also, congratulations on your 2000th post, Hyroen (ironic that it was in this thread)! ^^ EDIT: You ninja'ed me on realizing the irony.

I really want to learn on these forums. It's so helpful for in-game play.

But, at times, I wish I was more well-known.

Do you want to feel more unique by being able to customize your avatar to a greater degree? Well, I want people to know I'm the donut, and it gives me more of a sense of who I am here.

Do you want to feel "popular" by having a high post count? Maybe not popular, but I want to be known.

Do you get a feeling of excitement to see the community's response to your thread? Depends on the thread. If it's a deck or something that I think is good enough, I don't exactly love to see people ask me to make changes.

Do you feel guilt when you do not post anymore after having established a posting trend? No, because I don't think I have any posting trends, I just post when I have something to say.

Do you feel excited to see the new threads people have made? Yes, because without threads from other people, what would the forum be?

I guess I keep posting on the forums because the game is still fun to me, and I want to participate in events. And because I want to give feedback to other ideas, especially those I like.

Reactions to my posts are cool. It's reminds me that I'm not only playing a game, but also playing a game with others.

I just post when I have something to say and to see what others write (some "excitement" to see new posts indeed to the certain degree, including to my threads). Other things are not important.

Geez some of you guys really butchered the readability there.  : P

Meh, happy with my avatar as is.[/li]Couldn't care less about my post count.[/li]Big yes.  It is always interesting to see responses when I make a well thought out post, though I do tend to read more threads than I write.[/li]Guilt no, but I do take forum vacations every now and then and I start to miss this place after a while.  Side note, goodbye threads and that whole goodbye section is Lame.[/li]I probably click Show new replies to your posts about twice as much as Show unread posts since last visit.  You generally have to sift through a lot of
zanz to find the good topics, but they're worth it when you do.

I don't really play Elements that much anymore.  Maybe some pvp here and there but I rarely play the AI as I find the grinding tedious.  I kinda feel like I've been there and done that in pvp and I'm quite content with my 7 :fire marks.

I do enjoy hosting the Draft event cause it's fun and I get to do it my way without too much interference.  One thing I haven't done is apply for positions to take on more responsibility around here.  For one I like being able to come and go as I please and I don't think I need the extra work of a staff job.  I was the league updater in the first season of pvp leagues and it was a lot tougher than it is now.  You had to enter in each player manually and then put the scores and if you messed up once you had to start all over again and it was uphill both ways and snowing!  : P[/li]
