This has nothing to do with whether God(s) exists or not, but rather why does he/they need to exist?

That's basically it. Some people need to grab and hold on to something bigger than them in an almighty way, some almighty purpose. Then there are others who are very content without such a thing.

But to use a word like need... I don't think he/they/she/it needs to exist, it's the people that want it.

So God is created by man (to answer unanswerable questions) and not vice-versa?

Bingo. At least, or so I and a large handful of others believe. We won't truly know until we die.

Unless one of the religions is right, then your consciousness/soul would go to wherever you'd go to respectively and thus know you are dead and in the afterlife. Unless the afterlife wipes your memory clean of your beforedeath.

What ever is an afterlife, why ever would it exist, and however would we even know of it?

Who knows? Your best bet is to hope for knowledge of everything when you arrive in the afterlife, if there is one so you can understand why it's there. There is no need for an afterlife as I see it, then again, there is no need for a lot of things, yet they exist. And we can never know of an afterlife unless we die and see what happens :P

So the only way to prove there is an afterlife is to die, go and have a look about the place, and then find a reputable psychic who can report back our observations to the credulous world?

If only there was a reputable psychic...

No... the wars are between followers of different Gods, OR just as often followers of the same God, but with a different take on him.

I'm not sure there has been an atheist crusade yet, but correct me if I'm wrong.
