I don't know what warm fuzzy feeling the you're referring to when you talk about "true joy" (I don't think i've ever experienced that). But i've certainly been happy in my life and so i reject your definition for the purposes of this debate.
Well, I've been happy in the past, but that was before I realized what a horrible place the world is. Right now, the only emotions I feel are fear, sorrow, anger, hate, and schadenfreude (pleasure derived from the misfortune of others). I can't remember the last time that I was truly happy.
What is joy? There are three sources of it, as far as I can think of: joy derived from personal gain; schadenfreude; and "true", selfless joy. I think the third kind of joy is being happy simply by seeing other people being happy, with no relations to yourself and your personal gain whatsoever. I don't think this third kind of joy truly exists.
You are right, a lot of people are selfish and don't care much about others. But there are also generous people, who like to help others. Have you never seen anyone helping out someone without gaining something in return? I'd suggest you traveled somewhere else then.
Of course I've seen generous and selfless people, but those kind of people are pathetically, pitifully rare. Altruism is a weakness, and those generous people will be taken advantage of by the selfish ones. To put it simply, the world is "eat or be eaten", where the only way to survive is being selfish and constantly on-guard.
