Well, it depends on what you mean by literalism. I'm taking it to mean "All things in the bible literally happened" vs "some things in the bible literally happened and other things are metaphors."
It says that there existed strains of literalist thought, just as there were allegorical/metaphorical lines of thinking at around the same time-- when it mentions Augustine of Hippo, you could argue whether that meant he was a literalist or not depending on what definition you're using.
