Would the world (today and throughout history) be better or would it be worse off if religion never existed?

The reason I ask is because I always debate this with a few of my friends who can argue both points, so I am curious to hear what you guys think about this.

Neither. Religion as a concept isn't inherently good or bad. There would simply be other ideologies to fight/unite over.
