Quick creatures deal some damage, but mostly are there to draw out CC. Eventually, you get Vamp Daggers + Vamp Crusaders to keep your HP high while the halfblood dies, and 7 out of 10 games, you EM by casting a Heal and having your Crusaders pick up the last few HP as they kill the opponent. Halfbloods with repeatable CC will hurt -- especially Maxwell's Demons, which are the primary reason Mind Flayer shows up -- but most of them fall quite handily.
