What if instead of preventing any deaths, it was a creature that died instead of the next creature on your side to die. Or if it had a power similar to gravity pull where instead of attracting damage it attracts spells such as lightning and plague.

Yeah, that makes more sense.
@Jappert: When I think of a Martyr, the mechanic that comes to mind is a cheaper, one-use quint in the form of martyr dying instead of a creature when a creature dies.
